I have repeatedly seen atheism being frowned upon by "enlightened" new-age spiritual types, as if it is somehow contradictory to their spiritual beliefs. In this video I unpack the conflict between atheism and those who consider themselves to be spiritual, and investigate if there is any merit to their argument.
Featured in this video is a clip from Curt Jaimungals interview with Leo Gura, also a clip of the (ahem) movie - God's Not Dead.
Trippy visuals used for the end credits are by UON Visuals

College Student: "Why do you hate God!?" Professor: "Which one?" I had a fundamentalist Christian in one of my Biology classes. He asked the prof. "Did God create man, or did man create God?" Without missing a beat, the prof. said, "That particular question isn't covered in this course and won't be on the exam".

The word "God" seems to have as many definitions as there are folks to define it. The concepts contradict our 3D physics laws and without a firm base upon which to build our ideas, a wholesome belief is IMO often relegated to nagging fervent hope. Since DMT, I feel I'm much closer to my own "God" within (according to my own definition). I'll never be in futile business converting anyone and at the end of the day who gives the slightest hoot about what I or any other folks think? As long as we're all living our lives in the way that we're learning our life challenges and feeling comfortable with our own actions.

This video really resonated with me. Last year I deconverted from Christianity and am now an atheist. (I am unconvinced of the evidence for god(s) that the major religions claim exist.) However, even though I don't believe in a God as defined by the big religious leaders of the world, after experiencing many shroom trips I have an unmistakable feeling that I am part of something far greater then I could ever comprehend. That there is something so much MORE to life. So a term like spiritual atheism is something that I feel really fits my mindset. So thank you for that!

I used to identify as an atheist but since exploring my own spiritual journey I’d say I’m agnostic too, though I am very comfortable these days with using the word God as a concept which may be inferred as a religious deity but in reality it’s much more nebulous and personal. I’m a student of sciences but also spiritual, and yes I even pray (prayer doesn’t mean I’m not agnostic). I like to use the analogy of the wave-particle duality concept. I find it hard to grasp if I think about it too hard, but easy to understand if I keep my mind open. And my opinion is; I think there can be both scientific and spiritual outlooks for the same thing that might seem to be contradictory, but if I keep my mind open it’s beautifully simple: they’re both true 🥰

Experiencing the Godhead after an Lsd Ego Death is what made me seriously consider the possibility of a God after being an atheist all of my life. It is absolutely essential that you also try to be critical of your own beliefs but also try to validate them through reason and arguments. If more psychonauts read philosophy and science seriously they would have better arguments to argue in favor of whatever they experience on their psychedelic experiences. I recommend reading Kant, Hegel and Spinoza's views on God, death and immortality to all psychedelic users just so they know you can achieve the same conclusions that psychedelics offer but totally sober. I still prefer psychedelics because it's very different to read about something compared to going through it and living it.

The important distinction to make is the difference between a belief system or religious narrative and An authentic experience that provides an unquestionable ‘knowing’ that doesn’t require any faith, blind faith that are needed to uphold any beliefs etc. there’s a reason why deep profound mystical experience, various states of Samadhi, kundalini awakening, NDE’s are often described as being ‘more real than real’ … It’s because these experiences occur when a persons Consciousness has expanded beyond the limitations of this physical reality and into a more deeper or ‘ultimate reality’ that underlies all things. The truth that so many are unwilling to acknowledge is the possibility, or in my experience, fact, that is human experience that we are having is basically a Drama-Game-Simulation in witch we are willing participants and Co-creators that have chosen to inhabit these bodies (avatars) and Ego’s (characters) temporarily just for the experience and to cultivate Love. And that the Ultimate Reality is Non-Duality, That we are in effect GOD Experiencing itself within itself as individuated Consciousness. And when people keep meditating, or using psychedelics or some other modality and keep going down that path penetrating further and further this is the absolute truth that they will discover✨😉 🙏🏼✨♾💖🕉✨🙏🏼

The debate that you have a good go at resolving here, is merely a question of definitions. "God" is a word, religions are dogmatic societal constructs and we all know that there is an everything which we are part of. The degree to which we find the level of our connectedness to the everything is dependent upon our programming, time, spiritual practices and psychedelic trips! The truth is beyond words. Finding the Truth is incredible though.

Good video as always, but kind of a weird and I'd say hypocritical (the strawman accusation) portrayal of Curt. I interact with many atheists on a regular basis, and I absolutely agree with his take on it that some(!) exhibit what I consider to be something at least extremely similar to hate. The very idea of God seems to really do a number on the human mind, on both sides of the divide.
@AdeptusPsychonautica
@AdeptusPsychonautica 2 жыл бұрын
@@JohnnyTwoFingers regardless of whether you have had interactions like that with certain atheists, surely you can see that its an absurd argument to say “ALL atheists are motivated by a hatred for God and existence itself”? That would be like saying “ALL psychonauts are drug addicts in denial of reality”, or “ALL muslims hate America”. These are caricature statements, and while it might apply to certain individuals, it isnt a fundamental feature of those mindsets. So what in my portrayal of Curt was weird and hypocritical?
@Sabnock1990
@Sabnock1990 2 жыл бұрын
@@JohnnyTwoFingers - As with anything, there's extremist Atheists too. Imo, people who are against the concept of God are against it because they haven't been given any actual proof (IE direct experience/mysticism) and because the main religions are so far up their own asses that they turn people off and drive them away. If religions of the world would just drop the dogmas and be open for discussion and sharing of ideas/interpretations/perspectives, as well as provide people with direct mystical/spiritual/religious experience (which should ALWAYS imo be the first and foremost main factor of any legit religion), without claiming "my way is the only way" and instead looking for truth, wisdom, perspective, understanding, lessons, etc, i'd imagine religion would make much more progress. I think one of the big problems with religion is that they lack the main spiritual component that sets the foundation for religion/religiosity in the first place, religion is mostly all bark and no bite, spirituality is where the real deal is, religion is simply a structure designed to help integrate the divine/spiritual within everyday life and give context for how to live life, a structure can no doubt be important, but a structure without it's support beams is an inevitable catastrophe, if you catch my drift.

People who believe in the supernatural share something in common with atheists/agnostics...we experiment with psychedelics. An atheist will find value in exploring their mind and looking into the abyss in the hope they might understand the universe a little better, while the supernatural types often use it to augment their existing beliefs. Rob thank you for this video. As an agnostic who has had spiritual experiences with psychedelics I've been bothered by the direction people take with ascribing their experiences to [insert poorly defined magical system], as if they can fully understand this incredibly complex and under-researched phenomenon like a prophet (activate bullshit alarm). It takes an ego to declare something so ephemeral and subjective to be known and harnessed. Love your work.

Problem with words like God and Supernatural is that people start to argue not even considering the semantic issue of what preconception do they actually have of these words, how much of it is noise, how much perspective is missing, and what exactly does the other commentators actually mean on their end when they imagine these 2 words. Often the argument is in the details or the phrasing or the need to confirm the identity group. Say we leave the word God aside, the word supernatural is sort of a false dilemna where we think we can assume to know all what is natural and where the boundarie is, let alone define natural in itself, well some could argue that only artificial or synthetic made things are supernatural and that spooky event happening of their own course are in fact natural but unknown, some would argue that all our manmade synthetic and artifice is part of nature because we are and our action/us isnt specifically disconnected from "nature"

western and eastern taught get confused alot even in there own groups they differ. conspicuousness is i think the term many on the science side would better use maybe growing in to spirituality. others that are in to the beyond sciences also like to mix terms but best use the term spirit. its like the duality thing ppl do when its mostly spectrum perspectives both sides saying your wrong if you believe when both beliefs maybe wrong or just not have enough information. you will find that many atheist are just anti hebrew teaching and have made business from it like religious ppl did. i think most teaching are travels from the past with psych or by other means and have become what other translate as divine. they might just be part of the structure seen and unseen from the minds eye prospective and self translation

When I was young and impressionable, and deep into my "spiritual path", I found an ideological understanding of "God" called "impersonal". Essentially, that the universe and cosmos is amazing and transcends imagination, but does not have a "personality", per se. That there is no big "dude" looking over us and pulling the puppet strings. This is in conflict with the Krishnas and even Christians, but Hinduism has a place for this belief and Buddhists are in the same boat (if they're being honest and are not Shinto nor SGI cultists!)

Insightful video. Comically perhaps, I feel that it is impossible for anyone to be an atheist since I regard consciousness itself as the God of Gods. My belief is that there is only one consciousness and that all conscious beings are happenings within the one consciousness. Therefore, of course, it is impossible to be an atheist because consciousness is the very essence of the assertion of being an atheist. Generally when people say they are atheists what they are saying is that they don’t believe in their concept or idea of god so no wonder they are atheists filtering through such a scope. I believe that the human world is a split consciousness adventure play world and in such a world these kind of comedies are endless. To add to the comedy, most theists are in a way atheists since their concepts and ideas about god do not recognize that consciousness is the basis of these concepts and ideas. To paraphrase a line from a Vajrayana treatise: Wonder of wonders, although consciousness is the very essence of all conscious beings, it is not recognized.

Mmm... I have a lot of respect for you sir but I think you are missing something important. There is indeed serious tension between belief systems that leave no room for meaning (Strong-Atheism can be included in this category) - it is all predetermined and mechanical and anything else is stories we make up vs. belief systems that are based on some kind of a higher meaning, whether there is an explicit deity there or not.
@AdeptusPsychonautica
@AdeptusPsychonautica 2 жыл бұрын
I don’t think lack of meaning is an inherent feature of atheism, its simply a case of where that meaning comes from. Some peoole say meaning comes from god, or the bible, and I think most atheists would disagree with that - as would I. I completely agree that there are some really douchebag atheists who reject EVERYTHING, but thats just the silly obnoxious ones IMO.

@@AdeptusPsychonautica i would say lack of meaning is an inherent feature of physicalism (== no free will, all predetermined, counciousness has no room and no role) and that usually it goes hand in hand with some flavours of atheism. I also find the idea of god/tao as presented in all religions unsatisfactory and unconvincing but that just makes the "meaning crisis" (that drives a lot of people to Ayahuasca and other psychedelics in the first place) worse.

@@isaachagoel7344 you are describing a certain subset, which I grant are fairly vocal, but I don’t think are representative of the whole. Even those that accept no free will as fact don’t universally reject meaning - Sam Harris and Richard Dawkins here are two prominent examples of those who place great value in meaning and consciousness. The meaning crisis I think is more related to the shift towards modern disconnected society rather than a particular belief system, although I think belief (or lack of) is a contributing factor.
@isaachagoel7344
@isaachagoel7344 2 жыл бұрын
@@AdeptusPsychonautica I've been following Harris and to some extent Dawkins quite closely and when you brought them as examples for proponents of meaning it threw me off for a second because I couldn't recall them ever advocating for anything that would qualify. I googled a bit and the best I could find is Harris saying that it is "what is the meaning of life" is the wrong question and what one actually needs to do is meditate in order to be in the present moment (cough cough buy my meditation app), and Dawkins saying that the only meaning there is (except for spreading our DNA) is whatever we make for ourselves. I would be super happy if you could point me to something more inspiring that they said on the topic. I personally believe that the work you are doing, for example, has meaning. Not because you decided it has meaning but because it helps other minds (as well as your own) evolve (not in the Dawkins sense of the word), improve and make higher quality choices. I guess Sam would approve that you are acting morally (his idea of morality has to do with reducing suffering) but I doubt that he would grant it any meaning.

How does atheism explain near death experiences, ghosts / paranormal, arterial projection, demon worship, exorcism, high level Freemasons?

It doesn't, but nor does "God" explain most of those things either, so lets not put unrealistic demands upon atheists.

Watched the clip on Leo gura. It's obvious your not ready for the shift to God consciousness and do not understand how the world is a projection of your own mind and you are the creator. You are still in darkness and getting pushed around in your own dream. Realise this is a dream and you will then realise you are a God. This is realisation that leads to instant spiritual awakening. Words and language are concepts, before you took the name to be you you were still aware of being and this awareness is the real you, before all concepts,language and images you were still aware.

That awesome mate. Hopefully one day I will awaken like Leo and live my life as a malnourished delusional hermit with a porn addiction - until then though mate I'm fine with the current state of my consciousness as a human being 😉

@@AdeptusPsychonautica it's not about Leo it's about the truth and it's obvious you do not realise the fundamental truth that you are in a dream and untill you realise this you will be stuck in this matrix putting other dreamers down by your small minded comments and ignoring the message being transmitted.

@@AdeptusPsychonautica I’m sorry but calling someone a malnourished hermit is a bit extreme considering he has lots of videos about dieting and living a healthy life outside spiritual work. Im not defending Leo but if someone said something like that to you it’d be pretty mean considering you haven’t said something of equal animosity. People with any kind of spiritual insight don’t talk to people with this kind of hostility it’s clear the psychedelics haven’t told you anything about treating others with respect. He could just as well call you a traumatised mummy’s boy but don’t think you’d like that.

@KARDZ I think the phrase you are reaching for would be "traumatised boy with mummy issues", after all its quite hard to be a mummy's boy when you didn't grow up with a mother. Semantics aside though that description of me would be entirely accurate, and I don't take myself that seriously that I particularly care how people describe me - perhaps the psychedelics haven't taught you that lesson? Still I can concede that its not a charitable description of Leo, but if you read the conversation here then its hopefully clear that I am simply trying to pop the cult-like mentality of someone who is putting Leo on a pedestal, and sometimes the best way to do that is with a quick reality check. Likewise to yourself, if you think Leo making a video about a particular topic immediately makes him an authority on that topic (nutrition, diet, etc) then you are simply wrong. If he is such an esteemed health guru then why does he have such health issues?
