@@satlva2908 I disagree she could have had legitimate feelings of real fear and was in shock by what she saw but tried to talk herself out of the bad feeling bc let’s be honest no one’s first thought would be that their roommates were all just murdered by someone. Denial and possibly alcohol could have played a role In her behavior.. I just think the ppl attacking her are absolutely disgusting bc Survivors guilt is a VERY real thing and I’m sure she regrets not being aware of the severity of the whole situation. These ppl were like family, she lived with them. I’m sure she is beating herself up enough without having hundreds if not thousands of strangers pointing the finger at her and blaming her for the deaths of these kids. I can’t believe how grown people will virtually harass survivors or family members of crime victims. We need to call out that behavior every time we see it.

It doesn’t say that she saw a man with blood on his hand or his body. It’s likely that she was transfixed by his face. Mask covering his nose and mouth. That doesn’t sound like a baclava. Hence, I don’t think she had any indication that anyone, least of all, FOUR of her housemates were slaughtered. She may had bad bad vibes about this person but not comprehending why. Like an intuition. Don’t be too hard on this young lady. I can imagine she will have to go through therapy for many years to come.

I've been through the "freeze" stage of this. Was crossing a street and saw a car coming toward me and my body literally WOULD NOT MOVE. The car literally hit me while I stood there and watched. If I had taken TWO STEPS, it would have missed me. I was screaming in my head to move, but my body would not move. They are not kidding that things just SHUT DOWN and there is nothing you can do about it, even though your thoughts are screaming DO SOMETHING ABOUT IT. I was baffled at my own response at the time, but I can completely understood how Dylan just stood there frozen. This kid just shut down or reasoned away what she heard, because that's what people do when they can't make sense of things. My heart goes out to DM...she is probably wracked by horrible guilt over her actions, but the reality is what she is did is quite normal for the situation she was in.

As hard as it is, we have to really consider the fact that we don’t have all the facts as to what happened after she locked her self in her room. Maybe she had left her cell phone in her bathroom and that’s why she couldn’t call the police. Maybe she was in literal shock. Maybe she only heard what was listed in that affidavit & bc there were no screams or reason to believe he did anything other then try to rob the place, she hid. And maybe seeing a strange man in the house at 4 am wasn’t unusual. Maybe she was just shocked in the moment and just locked her door and went to bed. The affidavit never stated that D.M. heard screams, or any kind of fighting. It stated that she heard what sounded like Kaylee playing with her dog, Kaylee saying “someone is here,” Xana crying & a male saying “it’s ok I’m going to help you.” There were constantly people going in & out of this house, parties, friends/boyfriends over, etc. Xana had just got DoorDash delivered, so D.M. knew Xana & Ethan were up & making noise. It’s normal for people in college relationships to be emotional or cry, especially if they were out late drinking. When she saw a figure leaving, I don’t think her first thought would be that they just murdered 4 of my roommates. She probably thought something was off or weird so she went back in her room & locked the door. Not because she thought they were murdered but because a man was in her house that she didn’t know. Men can be predatory & as a woman you have to be cautious of that. This is all just speculation though. None of us know all the details & even if we did, we wouldn’t know how we would personally react in this situation. I’m sure she is going through enough right now with losing her friends & wondering how she could have done things differently. Not to mention people victim blaming her all over social media. We have to remember she didn’t commit these horrible acts, Bryan did. He should be held responsible, not someone who didn’t even know what was truly going on.

I'm going to say that this roommate encounter with the perp along with the eight hour delay in calling the cops is a big problem for the state. Otherwise, with all the surveillance cameras, cell phone pings around the house on other days, no cell phone pings from the perp's phone at all during the time of the crime, knife sheath conveniently left at the scene with DNA...it is all so pat. But just when you think you have a detailed, minute by minute account, you have this huge strangeness of Mortenson's account. And contrary to what we have heard for seven weeks -- that the house was almost soundproof between the murder scene and the downstairs rooms -- Mortenson is quoting actual fragments of conversation, presumably words of the killer. And she opened the door three times to see what was going on, the third time seeing the killer in full killer costume and was scared frozen as he walked by her. So having lost interest in these events, she goes back to bed and sleeps until near noon. I mean it really makes no sense, not that I have any dark theory about anyone but Kohberger being involved. But as a juror, when a very tight and pat account of the crime is presented to me all wrapped up with a bow, but there is this really, really strange business right in the middle, my confidence that I really know all about what happened is shaken.

Are comparing a 9-year-old Mary Katherine Smart to a 20-year-old that heard a whole lot of commotion? Arrest affidavit Latah County Page 4 Exhibit (A) statement of Brett Payne “At approximately 4:17 AM a security camera located at 11 12 king Rd, a residence immediately to the northwest of 1122 king Rd, picked up distorted audio of what sounded like voices or whimper followed by a loud thud. A dog can also be heard barking numerous times starting at 4:17 AM. The security camera is less than 50 feet from the West wall of Kermode’s bedroom” There is a reason why the distance and the time of these recordings are mentioned. These statements are sandwiched in between DM's statements. I'm astonished nobody including all the experts and the media are not reading between the lines. The commotion in the house at times mentioned was so loud, even with all the windows and doors closed it was picked up almost 50 feet away by a small microphone. DM was already alerted and was opening her bedroom door to investigate prior to these sounds being recorded.

One thing people have to keep in mind is the possibility of false memories. Going through a traumatic situation like this can make the brain do crazy things. She likely did see him as she was able to accurately describe him, but the other parts about hearing crying and such could be false memories after realizing what happened. She could have looked back on the night trying to rationalize why she didn’t call sooner. Survivors guilt can play a huge role in these false memories. For example in the moment she heard a floorboard creak, but looking back on that memory with the knowledge of what happened the creak is now her roommate crying.

If she said "someone was here" maybe she/they thought they were just a roommates friend or aquantinene & they came over uninvited and just startled them. Crying is nothing abnormal, people cry for many reasons: breakup, fight, etc. Unless someone yelled help or screamed loudly, many people could try to & rationalize what happened. The question becomes she and the other survivor may also be suspects as fucked up as it seems, killing 4 fully awake people is hard unless the killer was familiar with their patterns and the layout of the house and even then getting the drop on each person in such a short space of time would be hard and Bryan Kohberger could definitely be the killer (how his DNA got in the house is a huge question).

Bryan Kohberger IS the killer, and that was made obvious in the affidavit that was released yesterday. If you're not willing to read it, then you have no business commenting. Only one of the roommates was fully awake (Xana). It's not hard for a psychotic male of his height and strength to kill 4 drunk and/or sleeping college kids, three of them small females. He had been stalking them on at least TWELVE occasions, watching the house at night at various points for months before the murder, as his cell phone records and cameras show. I live in a college town, and I've been in some crappy roommate situations before. I once had some bad next-door neighbors (wanna-be gangbangers) in my apartment building that were constantly partying and fighting and keeping me awake all night. Complaining doesn't do you any good and calling the cops can make you a target of their revenge. You really want to move but you're stuck where you are for the time being. Having to put up with crap like that all the time, when the shit goes down you just roll your eyes, put the pillow over your head and hope it's over soon so you can finally get some sleep, just another night. Every single weekend they would throw parties and every single weekend it would end in fights and the cops were called. One night someone got thrown off the balcony onto a car below. After one particularly debauched night (with cops showing up as usual) I learned the next day that a neighbor had come over to complain about the noise and one of the partygoers followed him back to his place and laid a tire iron across his head, nearly killing him and causing permanent deafness in one ear, there was blood everywhere. I didn't find out about it until 10 hours later. This is what it took for the landlord to finally evict them because all other complaints fell on deaf ears.

The police had already come out there so many times about noise complaints and they sternly told them next time it would be a citation. I wonder if she was afraid about the police coming out again to the house over another "disruption." Especially since she was so unsure about what the disruption might have been. Someone also mentioned she might have thought the killer was actually the DoorDash delivery guy who had just come. Who knows? We all just know it couldn't have been malicious on her part.

In my experience, my reactions have been different depending on different factors. I’m a person that doesn’t fall asleep easy, I’m an anxious sleeper that’s easy to wake, and I can just get by on less sleep than a lot of people. I had a neighbor that would fight with his gf all the time. One morning I’m woken up by hearing her straining to say “I can’t breath.” I rolled out of bed landing like catwoman, run next door and beat on it, tell him I’m going to call police if he doesn’t open the door right now and let me see her (I do not personally know these people.) He doesn’t, I call 911 and he goes to jail. I get a summons for court but it was settled or dropped before that. I should say, I live alone. I go into the kitchen and walk past my door and see the handle turn and realize someone is trying to come in. I don’t call 911. I grab a weapon and position myself to see the door all night and just stare until I can speak to the property manager this next morning. I don’t even hallucinate things because of little sleep but I questioned myself all night and if calling 911 was an over reaction. I said all of that so people judging this girl knows, it happens to other people and if it’s never happened to you then you don’t know what you would or wouldn’t do. I’ve always thought I knew how I’d react but every time I’ve went through fight or flight, I’ve rarely responded the way I would have guessed. And if something else was going on with her, I think law enforcement has really stepped up and done an amazing job up to this point and I’m theorizing just like a lot of others but we’re just going to have to trust that they’ll get to the truth of everything. 🫶🏻

Well said…and she probably thought in the moment she was overreacting even though it scared her. But was most likely it’s nothing and to get some sleep and all will be good in the morning. Especially if the run in with the cops was for noise complaints on them. If I called the cops every time I felt uncomfortable they would hate me because so far 100% of the time it was absolutely nothing.

We are just the same! I am a very VERY anxious sleeper. I have two tiny babies, I hear everything while I’m asleep EVERYTHING. I can hear the first small sound my kids make as their waking up in their room and it’ll wake me up. I also had a situation with my door, I didn’t see it but I heard the knob twist slightly all the way from my room. My brain has the sound my knob makes memorized so I knew it was the front door. It was about 7am and I jumped out of bed quietly. Before heading to the door I quickly initiated an extra security measure on my kids door that I’ve had in place for a situation just like this one. (in my head I didn’t know if someone was trying to get in so I was acting on worst case scenario) As I approached the door I saw a figure through my eclipse curtain. The curtain allows enough vision for me to see outside but if you’re outside looking in the curtain is pitch black. In complete shock I froze, I clenched my fist out of frustration and because I was losing feeling in my legs. My nails broke some skin and the pain pulled me out of my frozen state. Quickly I grabbed my phone and a medium sized knife, we have a firearm but I was too scared to go back into my room for it because I thought if I stopped looking at the door it would open. After 2 failed attempts because of shaky hands I managed to call the police. What came next shaped the rest of my life. The door sounded like it exploded. I think he tried taking the door out with his body. I screamed bloody murder. My kids woke up crying, at this point I’m just trying to protect my babies. I assured my babies through the door that everything was okay and that I loved them. My daughter 3, understood bc she saw the barricade in place(we had practice drills prior) my son 1, was freaking out but thank my stars my daughter quickly calmed and took him into their hidy hole in the closet. Without going into any distressing details he made it in the house and remained in the house for 4 minute 48 seconds before the police came. My kids were untouched and completely safe. I didn’t hide with my kids because then he would’ve found their door and taken it down. I served as a distraction💔. I fought as best as I could, it almost felt like a dream because I couldn’t feel my hits landing on him. Some people including myself aren’t brave, strong or well collected under stress. I always knew that about myself, I grew up with abusive parents. If you feel you may freeze have a plan in place. Like a hidey hole 🕳️ or a reinforced door. I’m even preparing a secret safe room in my house so we ALL have somewhere safe and inaccessible from the bad guy. You don’t have to be brave or strong just prepared and smart.

I believe DM (the roommate) although she was scared and locked herself in her room, I think she went in her room and fell asleep, not knowing this masked man clad in black had stabbed her roommates and Ethan to death. I get asking this question, I had a hard time understanding it too. I have also heard her phone was in another room charging. I believe she didn't know Kaylee, Maddie, Xana and Ethan had just been murdered by this guy. So I think it makes sense she fell asleep, and thus 911 wasn't called until 7-8 hours later. I would admonish everyone to withhold judgment on DM, she is a victim too, a victim who survived!! Please put yourselves in her shoes, and hold space for her, and withhold judgment. To those who question DM not calling 911 sooner. A. She didn't know a murder had taken place. B. She heard some noises that she would have no way of knowing was a murder. Moans cries and thumps aren't uncommon in college apartments. She locked her door because that's probably her habit if a stranger was there? C. Have you met a 20 year old living away from home for thefirsttime? She woke to a silent house and called friends to help her. My 28-year-old daughter had smoke coming from the outlet in her apartment, and called her mom for advice, not 911 Give the girl a break!

If you have ever worked inside of a trauma/ER and witnessed victims with multiple stab wounds and gunshot wounds, there is ABSOLUTELY NO WAY this man would not have been covered head to toe in blood. She definitely would not have been able to see his bushy eyebrows because they would have been soaked with blood. Assuming the house was somewhat dark, one would have to get pretty close to see not only eyebrows, but to notice that they are bushy. Moreover, there would be blood all over his body, clothing and hallway. These were four, very young people and (I hate to be so graphic) arteries spurt/splatter blood several feet from the body, especially since they were in panic mode. That entire room, floors and walls would have been mostly covered in blood. Therefore, it makes no sense that she did not only didn't see and smell blood all over him, but she also claims she could see his eyebrows. The fact that some of the police were crying should tell you how horrific the scene was. This sounds like a repeat of Charles Manson along with a Susan Atkins, Leslie Van Houten clone who murdered Sharon Tate and the others. I am not buying the "she was in shock "as the reason for a delay in 911 calls. This place was known as a party house, so she is accustomed to seeing freaky strangers all hours of the night. Police had been called to this house quite a few times so seeing a man leaving early morning would not cause panic to ensue. Based on the reports, she did not know four people had been brutally murdered so why would she be in shock or traumatized? Four of her roommates were brutally murdered. I hope she wasn't involved and forgot to take the knife sheath with her. And for those who say no one knows what they would do in that situation. I definitely know what I would do so speak for yourself and not for others. You do a disservice to females unless you are including that the average male would have waited 8 hours to call 911 due to shock. Hmmm...wonder if this same scenario happened in a different neighborhood, not Idaho, how many would be making excuses for this female who delayed calling 911 for 8 hours? The families and friends have experienced an unimaginable loss, so I pray them.

I am sure there is a explanation for this that is more innocent then everyone is thinking. I really feel for both the girls, they without a doubt not only are suffering severe sadness and PTSD over this but survivors guilt also. These poor kids have been through enough and definitely don’t need people accusing her of things or what not. Then the investigation only came up with - Be on the lookout for this car.....It was obvious that they were zeroing in on the suspect, but still no release of the 911 call. there was really no reason to release the 911 call, as it was hardly even relevant to the murders.

No. She DID NOT think it was a friend of their roommates. The affidavit literally says she stood there and froze in fear when she saw the killer.

Then you went to sleep? People do freeze up from fear the unknown true but why did this guy scare her that bad that night? Did she see a knife. Just seeing a masked man wouldn't scare a person enough to freeze up for so long you wouldn't think.

A friend died in my apartment in the late 70s. I was so shook I was unable to call 911. I tried but I couldn't get my fingers to push the correct buttons. So I went out on the balcony and screamed for help. Thankfully, someone heard me and called 911.

The issue is not the freezing up… it’s the freezing up being used as an excuse as to why she didn’t call 911 sooner!! It was 8 HOURS after the commotion in the house that was loud enough to be picked up by the neighbor’s security camera audio!!!

It's so strange to me that there are people defending this roommate's really odd behavior. She heard strange noises around 4AM, heard her friend crying and saw a complete stranger in their home....yet just closed her door and didn't raise an alarm until hours later!? She's a grown woman, not a little girl. In fact, I've heard of cases where little kids risked their lives after their families were attacked or killed and went to get help or called police!

Exactly! I don’t want any of these people as my roommate! How many more hints do you need to know something is actually, horribly wrong? - dog going ballistic - friend crying - friend saying “someone’s here” - friend saying “it’s okay, I’m going to help you” - random, scary man walking past in black with a mask on (scary enough to freeze you to the spot) - a loud thud - your Spidey senses telling you to go peek out your door 3 times. Seriously, what else do we need to add to get a 911 call in there? Or minimally, call your roommates and ask them if they are OK? No answer? Go look! Too scared to look, again, something is wrong, call 911.

@@alyssagillespie8333 YOU said it perfectly.... TOOOOOOOO many times shew had HINTS that something was wrong... @Nicole B. EXACTLY... Something is really fishy here and it does not add up... If I saw someone... anyone... with a MASK on in my house at 4 AM... I'm calling the police... then YELLING to wake everyone up to let them know what I just saw.. MY Question is this... WHY did he let HER LIVE? Thank you Sweet Jesus he did... but why after the terrible things he had just done...

anyone can freeze mentally when they're confronted with the unexpected or unbelievibl. I was once asked by a motel house maid to help her in a locked guests room. The room had been lock with a chain for three days and she couldn't get in to clean. My first thought was she's not there or she'd have moved the towels to shower. Having small hands, I easly slid the chain lock aside from the outside. Sure enough, the girl was dead on the floor. I was so sick with flu and fever at the time, I told her to call the police and immediatlly laid down on that girls bed and went to sleep before police arrived. We just don't know what we'd do in unusual circumstances.
