Psycho (1998) Scene Analysis

Vince Vaughn is horribly miscasted as Norman. Although Marion was a little creeped out by Norman in the original, she thought he’d never hurt anyone. Here Marion should’ve fled right away after talking to him. Anne Heche is also miscasted as Marion. She’s too cheery and sassy. Marion’s supposed to be more quiet and serious. Janet Leigh nailed as a woman who would do anything to marry her boyfriend.

I also hated what Norman did when he watched Marion undress in the remake. I honestly don’t think Norman could do that because Mother prevents Norman from getting aroused or having sexual thoughts. I think in order to look at women sexually, Norman had to watch them getting naked.

Both Anne Heche and Vince Vaughn were terrible in this film. Heche said she didn’t even saw Psycho until they started filming.

Vaughn simply couldn't fill Perkins' shoes. Perkins was so charismatic, he perfectly portrayed the "he seemed so nice and normal" trope. He made Norman quite sympathetic, at least until the shower sceme

Perkins was fantastic as Norman. Norman was kind and handsome and the last person you’d expect to be a killer. That’s what made the twist so shocking.

So Gus Van Sant is mid all in all

Well, the movie he had made just before this was Good Will Hunting in 1997, which was nominated for 9 Oscars (including Van Sant for director) and won 2 (for Original Screenplay and Robin Williams). He used the financial and critical success of that film to fund this project. When asked why he would remake a classic Hitchcock movie, Van Sant responds, “Why not? It’s a marketing scheme. Why does a studio ever remake a film?”
