Important information: The UNCUT Version was discovered by a german bluray company called Turbine Medien, they traced Down the UNCUT Version which was shown in german tv. They restored it and put it back in. Universal now put that out, but turbine did the work , that universal should have done!

Hitchcock sold Psycho to Universal in 1963. From everything I can find out, Psycho was edited/cut in 1966 for tv screenings. Universal should know the history of how and why this movie was censored.

The release from Turbine Medien in Germany was the first Blu-ray which offered the uncensored version (Legacy Collection - Deluxe Edition). It was released in January 2019.

Someone mentioned that Turbine in Germany discovered and released the uncut version, but they actually put out the Blu-ray Psycho Legacy Collection in deluxe and standard versions, which is region free and besides the uncut version of Psycho contains all the other movies including the Bates Motel TV movie. Therefore, there IS a Blu-ray containing the uncut version of Psycho.

it was only edited by approx 20-40 seconds when Janet Leigh prepares for the shower and Anthony Perkins cleans up afterwards,The cut footage is on KZbin so no big deal really.Anyway A shot of Marion removing her black bra before her shower was removed by the U.S. censors while the scene remained intact in the U.K.

You WANT the grain in a film, it's part of the picture. If you remove the grain, you are removing part of the picture, which means less detail in 4K. So I'm glad to hear it is present. The 5.1 remix has changed and re-recorded sound effects and missing dialogue, so watch the mono track if you want the real soundtrack.

In case you don’t already know, this release initially didn’t include the original mono track so people were missing out on things like you said. If I was old enough and lucky enough to be involved in the 5.1 remix process, I’d be keeping as many original tracks as possible while adding in the new stuff such as cleaner sound effects and surround effects like 5.1 does. Hope that makes sense to you.

Awesome, I've said it before: THIS is what excites me the most about 4k and newer releases from some boutique-labels; great classics released in more or less lovingly created remasters/rescans to look better than they ever have!! However, the one Hitchcock movie from the coming box-set I'm most looking forward to is Vertigo; voted best movie ever in the last BFI world movie-critics poll, beating Citizen Kane, for the first time in eons! I've pre-ordered the set, for sure!! And good you're warning people about grain I suppose, but so so sad that you have to; it's FILM, people not digital! One would think some of these folks have never seen an analogue photograph.. oh, maybe they haven't.. well, go find one and have a look; grain is inherent, folks, and part of the classic "movie-look"

I saw someone on Blu-ray.com theorize that Criterion is actually positioning themselves to be the art house streaming service. Unfortunately, that actually makes a lot of sense. There really aren’t any signs that Criterion has even considered getting into the 4K game.

They already lost THE THIRD MAN forever due to a Ugandan court ruling, so putting all your eggs in one basket is not a great idea, especially with compression issues. Now, if they wanna loan out their 4K files for people who wanna do UHD releases, they could do that, but something tells me they'd be unusually dickish about that for some reason.

I saw Psycho when it was released. The well known version is what was shown in theaters on release. The extra footage was only released in foreign markets.

Like you I have seen Psycho on multiple formats, was lucky enough to see it in the theater a few years back. The first time I saw it was on tv when I was a kid in the 1980s and I was hooked. It's my favorite Hitchcock film by far. My mother recently bought a 4k tv and I contributed a 4k blu ray player so I preordered the box set as soon as I heard about it. Great review btw.

The same 4K Psycho Steelbook is availavle to pre order in lots of different countries from multiple retailers it's only USA is exclusive to Best Buy. The Alfred Hitchock 4K Box set trade wide release (Rear Window - Vertigo - Psycho - The Birds) been released on September in USA and other countries also incudes Psycho 4K release with both cuts of the film on UHD and Blu-ray- It's also not the first time Psycho Uncut been made available Turbine Medien in Germany released a box set in 2019 Psycho Legacy Collection that included Psycho Uncut for the first time on Blu-ray

Note that on this a mono track is included on both versions but it's not the true original mono mix, it is in fact a down mix of the remix cause all of the revisions done it the remix are present on the mono track on this release as well

Sage Parra I try. I never claim to be a technical expert - I think the “technical details” sometimes blur the lines. Ultimately the thing is - how does it look on the screen? And that’s what I do. I don’t dive into bit rates and nits/brightness - does it look and sound good? Then great!

Considering they had an uncut version now and not for the 50th anniversary tells me they PROBABLY went back to the negatives and that's how they found the edits (this has been becoming more and more common when they are going back to the ORIGINAL negative and not an answer print like a lot of previous HD masters) Just a hunch though

The original version was only shown originally in Europe not in the US. Since then it has never been released in home video until now if I’m not wrong. It has been shown on European TV though.

Since everyone is mentioning Turbine in the comments, you should check them out. They make amazing Products like 4K Versions of old movies and they also mix new Sound for Movies. They are one of the few Companies that put Dolby Atmos AND Auro3D both on the Discs. Definitely should check them out

Psycho wasn’t “censored to be R-rated”. The movie wasn’t rated R until 1984. The edited version was the version originally shown in U.S. theaters in 1960. The “uncut” version was the version that was shown in theaters internationally.

I want to get Hitchcock 4k but when it comes to formats I want all 4k or all Blu-ray...like all Rambo films I have 4k, Batman..etc. I'd want all Hitchcock films in at least one format, be it Blu-ray or 4k. I know there's Hitchcock Blu-ray sets but most of his early stuff isn't beyond DVD. Some single releases made it to Blu-ray but get ridiculous in price. My Hitchcock 20 suspense set for example needs at least a decent Blu-ray transfer.

This cut was never showed on the US. They probably send it to other markets by mistake (including Germany). From the AFI.com “The Hitchcock papers reveal that the National Catholic Legion of Decency demanded three cuts before giving the picture a “B,” or “morally objectionable in part for all” rating. The Legion required that scenes of Marion removing her bra be deleted, that the shots showing Norman washing his hands of blood be shortened and that the number of times Arbogast is stabbed be reduced from four to two. Psycho was eventually issued the “B” rating by the Legion, which announced: “The sensational use of sex and the excessive violence, which partially mar the development of the story, are considered to be entirely lacking in dramatic justification and to be highly objectionable.” That’s why Universal didn’t knew about this version until recently. Not sure if it’s my copy or it’s a general defect, but the making of doc freezes. Haven’t noticed that in the actual film. I have the Hitchcock anniversary box set version. I’m gonna watch it again to see if the movie gets stuck too. Could be my copy, could be my player needs a good cleaning. We’ll see…

Eric Kelly I don’t know, my 4K blu-ray says PG (I buy from the UK Amazon and they have the rating printed on the front cover even) and I fact checked myself before posting and found an archive article from I think it was The Independent from 1993 which said it was rated PG.
