This was my favourite of all the Psychobitch sketches I have seen. Taking the idea of Mary Queen of Scots as a Glaswegian druggie and running with it was a scream. It is the idea of culture differences between Scottish working class and English middle class culture was very acutely observed. The rawness of one set against the anxious unwillingness to offend on the other was the stuff of classic comedy.

She was raised in France because she was betrothed and then married to the Dauphin (crown Prince) of France and was in line to be the Queen of France if he hadn’t died. She only returned to Scotland after that and was always far more interested in being the Queen of France than she ever was being the Queen of Scotland. I’m not sure where you got that only the peasants were French because that wasn’t the case at all. The French were not occupied, the aristocrats were French and the court spoke French - in fact French had been the language of the English court for a while as well due to the Norman invasion. It’s very well established that Mary’s language of preference was French and that she likely had a French accent. (It’s still funnier to have her have a modern Scottish one though)

I loved this sketch. Perhaps it helped that my maternal heritage is from rural Northumberland which is culturally closer to Scotland than England. I am in my 60s and when I go to that part of the world now I never hear the Northumbrian dialect spoken as it was by my grandparents; I hear the accent but not the dialect. This is a close as it gets for me both in the humor and the quickfire wit.
