Amber Heard's mental health was a main topic of testimony in court on Tuesday. Dr. Shannon Curry, a clinical and forensics psychologist hired by Johnny Depp's legal team amid his ongoing defamation trial against his ex-wife, testified that she diagnosed Heard with borderline personality disorder and histrionic personality disorder.

She clarified that trauma is present sometimes with borderline personality disorder and that there are some with BPD, who have had no childhood trauma. She was incredibly specific, rather than making a blanket claim. She did not say that trauma can't cause it, but rather that they do not have evidence currently to prove that childhood trauma does cause it, as there are people with no childhood trauma who have BPD. She was also careful to say, "childhood trauma." She was not incorrect in her statement.

I thought the doctor looked baffled when she was caught out on many occasions and stumbled bumbled her way through. She started smooth and ended very rough.. looks like heather Lockear. I wonder since she is so hot, I f she has borderline personality disorders of any sought. She said it’s mostly the princess types.. I’m not sure which one would be safer, Amber or the doctor.. they both seem dangerous to me. Going to his house and having dinner and drinks there is a worry for the Depp team. My mom has it . Severe one. Since last 18 yrs. She had never hurted anyone around us. Never ever Infact she had tried to hurt herself during the manic episodes. But never ever hurt any one else. Infact in most of the cases a bipolar person is so confused in their own world ( at the time of episode) that the chances of hurting some else is less but the chances of hurting themselves is high. I seriously 😒 doubt amber over this.

Yeah well the spunky doc was nice and cool and classy early.. she was frazzled later on.. caught in a few wrong turns and had to go back and reverse a few times, which wasn’t great for team Depp if I’m being honest.. As someone who suffers from BPD, Amber Heard's fame scares me. Us cluster b's already get enough shit about us all being manipulative, emotionless abusers. It's only going to get worse with one actual abuser in the spotlight. Believe me, she deserves everything she gets but those of us who struggle daily to keep ourselves in check don't. Please don't assume everyone with a PD, especially cluster b's, are all abusive. We're not, we don't want our brains to be doing what they're doing either. BPD is like having a little voice is your head, pointing out every flaw of your loved ones, insulting them, getting you to hate them for no reason. It's also a lot of desperation for attention and approval, not knowing who you really are, so you attach yourself to anyone you think positively of and taking their traits on yourself. When they leave, it's devastating. When we split on people, it hurts. It's frustrating. Having breakdowns feels like you're going to actually die from pure stress. If you're on good terms with someone with BPD, remind them that they're brave today. Feeling so inhuman is damaging.

Thank you!. The average viewer is more than likely (and I have already witnessed this) going to interpret this information incorrectly, most definitely! I am 53 and was only just diagnosed in 2020.. after years of living with Anxiety and ADHD (consciously). There IS a lot of stigma (around a LOT Of mental health diagnoses ) and it is unfortunate. I am hoping that this will help "normalize" the conversation around Trauma and Trauma informed diagnoses and mental health issues in society rather than just stigmatizing them and creating more fear and anger. . We have already been through that. No, that does not mean having a mental health issue is an "excuse" for "bad behavior" or abusing anyone but it is complex and harrowing to navigate these issues.... sigh.. and this is SUCH a public trial as well. good grief.

It’s also important to note that there are mass variations among different people with BPD. There are 9 symptoms over all and you need a minimum of 5 of them to meet the criteria for diagnosis. This means that there are about 256 possible configurations. We’re different. Some of us internalise our pain. For example, the ways that I negatively affect my environment is causing others worry that I’ll hurt myself, being annoying with my reassurance seeking behaviours (like apologising too much) and irritating with my constant need to assert my barely existent identity to receive reactions that act as validation of my identity. Like I don’t believe that I am smart (even though to be fair it’s quite obvious), unless I get regular feedback of people acknowledging it. I know this can make others feel stupid or inferior though people who get to know me know I really don’t mean it in that way. But that is the extent of it and I make an active effort to avoid these behaviours. I certainly do not emotionally abuse people and if anything as a victim of emotional abuse myself it really hurts to hear this particular characterisation of BPD especially because one of my abuser’s favourite tactics was shifting the blame (painting me as the bad guy).

Not everyone is the same and also a mental disorder does not define the person, it defines syntoms and characteristics. There are bad people who suffer from mental disorders and good people who suffer those same mental disorders and despite of that thing in common, they can be totally different people and approach their lives differently. As someone who suffered the abuse from a person from cluster B, I can tell you I approach cluster B people with caution because of my own trauma but I try that this caution doesn't prevent me to see the whole person, not just their diagnose.

In my opinion, society has come a long way in understanding that mental illness or disorder is a health problem. Illness doesnt start at the toes and end at the neck. There is always more education and understanding to go with society but I am sure in another 20 years society will be even more understanding. I really don't think people are thinking ill of people with BPD. If they are, I think it is directed at Ambers behaviour and actions, not her illness. Her illness is giving them clarity as to her behaviour. As people with BPD still know right from wrong and do not suffer delusions, as you would know.

There are a lot of people reiterating though that BPD can present differently for different people, there are different levels of severity or scale of negative behaviours and emphasing not to blame a person for a mental illness. I was diagnosed with BPD about 15 years ago & my symptoms presented very similarly to Amber’s at that time. Rage/violence was common for me in my closest relationships because of my fear of abandonment. And I was socially savvy like her where no one even realized anything was going on unless they were told. Her case is pretty extreme but so was mine and I sit here today completely free of violence for a decade. It’s not impossible to treat this disorder and I hope she finds relief as I did because otherwise she’ll keep physically pushing the limits until it either kills her or puts her in jail. I am not familiar with HPD but I am sure I recognized the majority of her symptoms of BPD before Dr. Curry ever took the stand.

Fortunately I think it’ll just bring awareness to the disorder and if people listen to the whole testimony from this doctor they’ll realize that she also has the histrionic personality d/o which is honestly what makes amber heard a bad person. Histrionic unfortunately is not a disorder that is something someone can easily come back from or redeem themselves from. Unless people tell her or make her take copious amounts of heavy duty counseling/therapy/psych sessions. Even then it’s not something where someone is like oh yeah that’s what’s wrong with me, that explains it! Now let’s try to reel this in. Like BPD or many other disorders where perhaps there’s not treatment but therapy helps immensely on how to cope at least. From what I’ve gathered it seems like people with HPD don’t care to cope because they’re not the ones with the problem in their eyes, even when they’re being told they are.

I work as a mental health nurse, and I call absolute bullshit on Dr Curry's analysis: For starters: - Dr Curry is being paid by a rich actor to diagnose highly stigamised mental health disorders in his ex-wife for the purpose of ruining her court case - Psychologists cannot diagnose mental health disorders, that's what psychiatrists are for. Unlike the former, you simply cannot hire a psychiatrist to gaslight your ex-wife in court because of the obvious conflict of interest - Dr Curry comes across as confident and well-spoken, which makes her misleading explanations come across as fact (more on that below) - The higher number of women being diagnosed with BPD is largely due to the fact that men are less likely to seek mental health support for emotional and mood-related problems, and more likely to be misdiagnosed with other disorders (i.e., BPAD) despite meeting at least 5 of the BPD traits. Dr Curry carefully omits these details, despite the psychiatric concensus and emerging literature constantly highlighting this issue - BPD absolutely is linked to trauma - it simply does not develop without traumas and stressors in childhood and adolescence. Again, this is the psychiatric/medical concensus. Presumably, Dr Curry's denial of same is because she was brought on to attack the possibility of Heard having PTSD Had Heard hired Dr Curry first, no doubt she'd be standing there confidently "diagnosing" her with PTSD, and elaborating how Depp's 30+ year history of criminal behaviour (i.e., all the assaults and property damage he's been arrested for) and drug abuse meets the criteria for ASPD and SUD

What I have described, is exactly what these professions do and are for. Psychologists cannot diagnose mental health disorders. It is not in their scope of practice, and not what they're trained or expected to do. Rather, their diagnostic role is limited to identifying problems a client faces (similar to how nurses make "nursing diagnoses"), and provide psychotherapy and other non-pharmacological interventions to assist them with their recovery. Psychiatrists, meanwhile, are responsible for making formal diagnoses, prescribing medications, and making referrals to other services and professions. Heck, even a psychiatry registrar or GP are able to make psychiatric diagnoses (to a certain extent), but psychologists are not able to as they are not medical practitioners

The people who got this disorder is sensitive to relationship aspects and can be paranoic at feeling or thinking people are hurting them. Its common that people with this disorder revive all past wound or traumas with new people, Amber must not have been hurted by Jhonny Depp, but she must have been by other people, including her care figures.

@@lovely7983 actually not. If you had listened carefully, doctor Curry tried to explain very clearly that there is no singular one-size-fits-all clause. That a lot of factors can be involved. One should also keep in mind that if a person is less fortunate in the genetics lottery, that one can be predisposed towards certain behaviors that can be traumatizing as well. Cause and effect can sometimes be hard to pin down. People with both trauma and unlucky genetics have the worst of it. Even so, if someone just mainly faces the genetics and not environmental factors that does not automatically make the genetics less bad.

Reaching the leaking point of the glass, one drop (of a gene), one drop ( of a trauma), and so one, so one… the drop individually doesn’t cause the leak but the conjugation of factors ( environmental and genetic) cause the leak and the mental disorder. This is how a neuro disorder teacher explain to us in college and it made it easier to visualize. And even though different disorders are correlated to a lower or higher genetic percentage (so for instance if your relatives have it you are likely or less likely to have it), in the majority or even in all disorders both factors ( genetics and environmental factors) have an impact

PDs are caused by traumatic and difficult childhood and adolescence. The actions are the consequence of having a personality disorder. You dont have one 'because you act a certain way'. I think amber is a terrible person because she failed to get treated and work on her disorders and continued to get off on toxicity. Firstly there are different types of BPD with quiet BPD being one of the more common which leads the sufferer to be overly agreeable, submissive and succeptable. Secondly most people with BPD when controlled or even not are much more able to keep composure and mask when in public and actually it's behind closed doors the mask slips and we tend to become far more emotionally unhinged but 99.9% of us are not a physical threat to anyone but ourselves. I may be a grumpy bugger but I have never been horrible to my fiancé I tend to go quiet and submissive during arguments 80% of the time and then love bomb him afterwards out of fear of abandonment even if he was the one shouting at me. Then the other 20% of the time I'm grumpy and easily irritated about things and just snappily ask him to stop and again apologise and calmly talk out my feelings afterwards. This is my perspective of how it is in my relationship but again it's not an objective fact and that's why it's better to stick to facts such as BPD sufferers are emotionally unstable and have a fear of abandonment (two of the diagnostic criteria for BPD)

Bipolar is caused by a chemical imbalance in the brain while bpd is a disorder in the self. It's actually like night and day though it sometimes look alike. Also Bipolar 1 and Bipolar 2 are very different from each other so Bipolar in itself does not look like bpd but are sometimes mistaken for Bipolar 1.

It's not talked about enough, and when it is, it's always BPDs themselves trying to ''destigmatise'' it by literally denying how horrible it is for everyone. No one at all is talking about their victims, like Johnny. It's such insidious abuse, it's so hard to even begin to describe it.

If you watch the entire cross-examination, you will see Dr Curry's explanation for this. It wasn't a personal dinner with Johnny, it was an interview with him and his legal team, who were evaluating whether or not to hire her to be an expert witness for them. The meeting took several hours, therefore they served her dinner and drinks, which is a common courtesy that everyone should show to guests. If you are still suspicious about Dr Curry visiting Johnny's house for the interview: that can easily be explained by the fact that he is a world-famous actor, which means it is easier for him to just hold the meeting in his own home, rather than go to Dr Curry's office where there are other people around to see him.

The issue of women being "overdiagnosed" with BPD is when it's misdiagnosed instead of, for example, autism. It doesn't mean that a perfectly healthy woman is randomly labeled as having BPD to shame her in front of a jury.

@@beatsbyelvis6890 How was that a terrible example? It happens a lot. A psychiatrist suggested I might have BPD before I was diagnosed with autism. Common factors that lead to the misdiagnosis are extremely high stress levels and the inability to deal with stress (causing meltdowns in autism) or self harm as a coping skill. I'm not saying they're actually the same, but misdiagnosis is common.

Using a personality disorder diagnosis against someone is discrimination. Why would the diagnosis itself paint somebody in bad light? BEHAVIOUR is the only thing that one should be looking at (and I'm not saying hers was alright; all I'm saying is that the diagnosis should never be used against someone in court or life in general).

@@James-yl4vrBpd individuals are everywhere , just because Amber is (or isn't maybe it was easier to win the case if her lawyer said she is suffering from a mental health disorder you know)that doesn't mean every bpd person is that toxic.Stop generalizing.People who suffer from lifelong mental health disorders and still manage to cope are true heroes.Sorry for my english, wish i could explain this better to you.

@@DasSinaTier do not worry about it. Any disorder or illness gets that name for one reason only. Which is to match the best treatment to that disorder. That's all it is. So if you, go around in life saying you have bpd, that's on you. What you should do instead is focusing on being as independent as you possibly can and gain some stability by moving to stable ground. Which you can. Don't let this distract you. You will be fine.
