And in the beginning there was no patriarchy obvious in the relationships. The wives worked out the load bearing roles of work and child care and Kody was an exciting special visitor who came and went. There was no appearance that he wanted to make all the decisions and run things. He married 3 very independent women. He didn’t discover until much later how much he liked a dependent (on the surface anyhow) woman who catered to him.

As an adult child of a parent with behaviour similar to Kody’s, I can tell you that those kids are devastated. They will forever wonder in the back of their minds why they’re not good enough for Kody, why they don’t deserve equal treatment, and why they’re expected to be the “adult in the room” and make it right. Anytime the inequity is brought up to Kody, he starts his crazy-making and turns the blame on everyone else, going so far as to suggest the rest of the family doesn’t care about his and Robyn’s kids. The depths Kody will go to to be right has no bounds. He has such a poverty of awareness that he not only does he not see it, he actively turns away from it to avoid feeling guilty. I see a lot of no-contact in the kids future. It’s sad to watch.

Janelle and Meri's discord goes WAY back to Janelle divorcing Meri's brother. Meri never forgave her for that, and then marrying Kody. She then promptly started popping out kids, while Meri struggled after having one child. Christine came along and leveled everything out for a bit, was the "fun" wife, but then Meri got too "abusive" and disciplined Christine's kids unfairly, compared to the other kids. Hence, the wedge there. Meri was married too young, didnt have the coping skills to handle being married herself, much less adding in extra wives and their emotional baggage. It was a train wreck from its inception.

Everyone seems to be pushing Janelle past her comfort zone, IMO. She hasn't received what she internally needs as her message or "testimony" that her spiritual marriage is done. So she's "fine" living on her own, seeing Kody when it suits her needs, and she'll get there when she's ready. I know if I was pushed so much I'd backlash against those who kept pushing me. I think everyone needs to support Janelle with her decision to wait for her testimony. The more supported she is AS SHE IS, I believe the quicker that testimony will come to her. She has no legal marriage it's her religion that holds her. Plus she's always been very private, so maybe there are reasons such as finances that she's working on fixing?

In the beginning everything was a drama with Meri. They had to use the same washing powder she wanted. If the kitchen wasn't as clean as she thought it should be after someone else used it she threw a fit. She demanded the same money, house etc that the others had when they had 6, 6 and 5 kids even when they were struggling financially and yes she had been mean to the other kids and she got physical once with Mykelti and was also really awful to Gwen.

Outside of the show some of the older kids have come out to say Meri's treatment of some of the older children was emotionally and verbally abusive. Maddie had a tweet she deleted about it, Mykelti has talked about it as its been suggested she got the worst of it and Paedon has claimed that Robyn spotted it and stepped in going so far to claim that this probably saved Mykelti's life. Christine has also commented that her relationship with Meri changed due to how she was treating her kids.

Christine has also said that she would not befriend her because she (CHR) does not feel like Meri is a “safe” person for her based on a lot of previous interactions that she had with her when they were sister wives like making fun of her in front of others and being very sarcastic. There is one old episode where CHR tells her that she doesn’t feel safe around here so this has been well documented in at least two past episodes. Meri was extremely mean to both CHR and JAN when hey first came into the family. Yet, on this season alone, we've heard about how she decided ear piercing was okay so he caved. She believed a commercial Christmas was okay so he caved. If he wouldn't celebrate Easter then she was going to do it anyway at her mom's... caved. Mary wouldn’t let the wives walk through her house (even when she wasn’t there) - and they would have to go outside in the ice and cold and they slipped on the stairs many times to get to each others house. Mary harshly (they feel abusively) disciplined their children, Mary insisted on having equal money and fed her one child expensive food (steak etc.) while the other families struggled with food insecurity. Mary had to have a bigger more elaborately finished house (wet bar etc.) than the other wives with their six kids each in Vegas.

I really love Korean dramas. Especially the historical ones. Usually there is a king who is married to a queen and has several concubines. Mostly there is a concubine who wants to take the place of the queen and start manipulating everyone around her, making sinister plans, not thinking about the consequences and making the king turn away more and more from the queen and the other concubines. This is how I see it: Kody is the king. Meri was the queen. Janelle and Christine were the concubines. The officials (The Faith) required the king to bring another concubine into the palace. It is the queen's job to find a suitable concubine for the king. And the queen found a new concubine named Robyn, who probably had her own plans from the beginning and wanted to take the queen's place. Unnoticed by the king, the queen and the two other concubines, she began her manipulations and distanced the queen and the other concubines further and further from the king. The king and queen fall for her masterful play and divorce their marriage so that the poor concubine, who has three children with a farmer, can officially marry the king and the king will recognize her three children as his. The dethroned queen takes the place of the concubine, not realizing how much power she gives to the new queen, who soon makes the king completely dependent on her. The king calls the new queen the love of his life. Which gives the new queen even more power and backing. The new queen begins to enforce her own rules and ideas and makes the king believe that he developed and wanted these rules and ideas. Unable to see what is happening around him, the king begins to lose not only his concubines, but also the princes and princesses. But because the king is someone who always thinks only of himself first anyway, he doesn't care. But the people (the audience) know the truth. But the king tries to distract the people from the truth with lies.

If you look at the totality of both the relationships within the family and little comments from Kody & Robyn re: one another? In my opinion, it looks as if he's a sex addict. Robyn: the nanny is there so she can always be available for Kody. She doesn't reject his sexual advances like the others have, and she does things they won't do because they don't like it or believe in it. From him: He's always always touching her and he dislikes having to tone down the "sexual tension" when Meri is there. That's a really weird thing to say after a dozen years of marriage and has really specific inferences. Also, I get the distinct feeling he has viewed sex with the OG 3 as cheating on Robyn for ages.

I thought the start of the problems for Christine and Kody was that Christine was working nights and asked Kody to help with bedtime tuck-in's and Kody said 'NO!' because she was asking too much of him. He just ran them all together awkwardly because he's ready to be done with all of them. "Situation and discord" did include the kids. Meri talking about flirting referenced the contractor hearing her in the background over the phone saying Hello. Oh, yes, they can so do a Season 19. You underestimate TLC's grasping. lol

It's clear especially in the early episodes that Meri has been very mean to Janelle and Christine in the early days before the cameras and instead of properly unpacking it, Meri was like "I just have a strong personality and I'm not afraid of conflict" and everyone was like "yea 😅" Janelle constantly shut down around Meri, while Christine always switched from trying to appease her or ignored her but by time Robyn came, Christine stopped trying because Meri's attention was on her

Agree with you David that TLC really let us down with that episode as the previews showed Meri leaving but in reality she resigned her lease to stay. Also, I wonder too why Meri gets so much hate. They talk about kitchen arguments when they were young but like really you're going to hate someone for thirty years because they wanted a clean kitchen or because they thought the ketchup should be refrigerated after opening? The vague answers they gave seemed so trivial years later to me.

Meri was very controlling and wanted things her way. Christine doesn’t like her because she was bad to her kids and they had a fight about it and never recovered. There’s more to it but that’s the short version of it. Some of the kids have come out and said Meri did really bad stuff to them and some siblings.

As for Janelle and Meri and why they stay with Kody, I think it's simply due to their deep faith. In my opinion, it has nothing to do with love. Because Meri, as well as Janelle, know how Kody really thinks and feels. They are still with him because of their faith. And both of them find it very difficult to give up because of their deep faith. A friend of mine is also a deep believer. And even though she knows that her husband has been cheating on her for several years and he even has two children with this other woman, she doesn't leave him. Because her faith forbids her to leave her unfaithful husband. Rather, she even blames herself for her husband's unfaithfulness. Totally wacky, but unchangeable until she herself is ready to put her own happiness above her faith.

My friend caught me up to speed with Meri. Meri wasn’t very nice to her sisterwives or the kids. Meri unfortunately had fertility issues so she had one baby to J and C’s 6 children each, and demanded the same amount of money to care for her one child to their 6 each, so J and C found themselves struggling. Meri apparently brought a lot of drama.

I believe Paedon and Gwendolyn explained that Meri is abusive to younger kids. Mykelty spoke about it a bit too. Robyn actually spotted it and brought it to the others attention. Meri has a vicious mean steak that you're not seeing on the show.

In this episode, Kody describes a 'bad' sister wife (aka Christine) as a woman who takes the man's children away from him. Does he not remember that Robyn not only took her oldest 3 children away from their biological father, she gave them legally and permanently to another man? It was also weird to hear Robyn describe Solomon as more like her, and that he was an introvert. Robyn has never ever presented as an introvert. It's the opposite. Do these people even see themselves? I honestly hope to never again see Kody and Robyn after this season. They truly disgust me.

I wonder if the rift with Christine and other family members was because of her alliance with Robyn. Thru thick and thin. Even during all of Kody's antics and tantrums when Robyn stood by his side as every good Stepford wife should. Even when Kody talked #&$% about Meri and the others and Robyn turned a blind eye. These women all became accustomed to bird crumbs. Finally when they started realizing that they were hungry for more, they've all reacted differently. They probably have all repressed a lot and are struggling to realize and heal themselves.

Meri has a different personality than Christine and Janelle. The three focused on issues instead of stepping back and looking at why they respond the way they do. Christine and Janelle's personalities are complimentary. I had a coworker I couldn't stand. She was constantly on my last nerve. One day we sat down and had a real conversation. We realized we had conflicting personalities. How she became one of my best friends. We learned to appreciate our differences.

There were comments about Meri and how she treated the kids. But to me, when she had that catfishing problem, she was treated like an outcast! They were so angry at her, especially King Kody, she was basically shunned. Even her daughter was horrible to her. In my opinion, she was reaching out online because she was already lonely and needed attention. True, that will get you into trouble a lot of times, but I didn't see anyone really being understanding towards her. If they did it wasn't sincere. I think she is still carrying the shame of what happened and that is partly why she hangs around waiting for "forgiveness" from him. She needs to put them all in her rear-view mirror!! As for Janelle, the more I think about it, the more I'm starting to think she is repressing her real feelings, if she let it out, she WOULD be feeling rejection and hurt. But she is very invested in her "independent" image. Maybe I'm wrong, we'll see. You are absolutely right about Kody. And this is so familiar to me. My ex is not hostile, well, outwardly but in that narcissistic passive aggressive way, but he even told me and our son that we were not a priority. We're divorced now and our son is a grown man, but he feels it. You always need your dad; it is so sad what he has done to those kids.
