As you play through the play through Loboto's Labyrinth, I noticed that in the "lobby" where Loboto's big painting is, there is a light/chandelier over the painting that slowly turns into the Gzar crown with each subsiquent ruturn to the lobby. I wonder if this was like the posters, in that the threat of Malik looming over Loboto became more prominent in his mind as Raz delved deeper? Or, was Loboto perhaps subtly trying to tell Raz and those involved who it was that he was so scared of, just not overtly because he felt he couldn't tell with words, like some part of his mind was trying to reach out for help?

I feel this is very on point so not much the say... except this: How easily Dr. Loboto folds to stronger minds, to abusers, probably fold back to a central figure from Raz's last intrusion on his mind, His Father. His first Abuser. It's also somewhat interesting that rather then the three well trained and experienced Psychonauts, only Raz was able to initially reach deep enough into Loboto's true mind to even get a glimpse of "the boss". A sign of trust? A lack of perceived threat? He does appeal to Raz after they are all expelled and is more open to him as he escapes.
@GamingUniversityUoG2 жыл бұрын
I think it is partially the familiarity Raz has with him and partially the writers portraying him as a protege. I think an argument could be made that the others actively don't try to do some things because of moral issues. But I think most of it is casting our main character as the best of the best.

@@GamingUniversityUoG the other thing is lobotto does have more trust of raz , as seen when he does choose to answer raz’s questions in his mind “ who are you protecting , “ “myself” isn’t a lie . And as you stated raz got lobotto’s moral compass back , his mind would literally assoate raz with said moral compass, and if we look at the mental constructs and how they attack , multiple times lobotto puts raz back in the relatively safe lobby while in the same instance kicking out one of the other psychonaugths Lobtto also seems to want to tell someone but can’t , and play the level almost feels like lobotto is subconsciously leading raz to what hes so afraid of without stating it

Imagine if somehow Loboto manages to get the damage caused by his Lobotomy repaired, even with his brain damaged he was able to overpower and push back against multiple trained experienced psyconauts who were being assisted by two young prodigies with relative ease, his mental strength is beyond impressive, imagine what he could do with actual powers.

Loboto is much like a tooth-ache in many ways. He seems harmless, and at most is a consistent nuisance with occasional hits of harsh pain. Though despite that he is the start of something potentially much worse, and helps further infections fester underneath the surface. Also like a tooth-ache the creation of him was for the most part completely avoidable if proper care was taken, yet he is blamed and not his cause for the most part. Well enough musing, glad this series continues with the excellent sequel, hope you have a nice day and keep up the good work.

@@datwitchyswordfan That is a dumb thing to be upset about. Though, I don't blame Raz for taking initiative on the Thorny Towers inmates. The people he helps in 2 are just as damaged and in need of help, but are all at least *lucid* and can make that call. In 1, they weren't in touch with reality at all except perhaps Edgar Teglee and weren't capable of reasoned discussion. You always get consent from someone to do anything invasive unless they are in a crisis that prevents them from making a decision at all. But, if they're not capable, you have to take the initiative.

I'm impressed. You managed to completely misrepresent and misinterpret the gripes other people had with the second game. I'm very proud of you. I've heard many people complain that Psychonauts 2 lost its "cynical edge" and that the game no longer tried to make humor out of the morally absurd. There were no more directly offensive jokes, morally questionable actions were always taken seriously and never played for laughs, and (as stated) Raz had to ask permission before entering someone else's mind or else "the game would've been promoting toxicity" or something. I should mention that I don't personally have a problem with Psychonauts 2 being less edgy or shifting its perspective in humor. I think the game is amazing and the story telling (the part I care about) is even better than the first game. That said, I can't stand people like you who so easily and readily misrepresent other people's criticisms because you didn't understand what they were upset about. There's nothing wrong with enjoying edgy humor and wanting it in stories they enjoy. It was present in the first game and it was done excellently. I don't blame people for missing it since it's so rare to see these days.

Well, his trauma and his childhood history had him develop a type of dependency, it may not be a specific Co-dependency but in his possible perspective it is. He is easily manipulated because he uses his dentistry, or the surface skill he has of it, to answer the situations all around him and he follows to not be alone. Yes, he is a victim, but at times, act like he is the 'front' but the truth, was the tool used by others, yet he is successful and smart, as shown in the first game and how well he has conducted the kidnapping and brain swap in the title between 1 and 2.

As is the case with most people operating under repressive ideologies, he's a lot more dangerous than he would be if he was less intelligent. The question is whether or not he's cowed enough by the ideology or others operating under it (whether the fear and dependency are strong enough) to turn his intellect towards its goals - if he isn't then he's a danger to the ideology itself, as we see with his actions towards the end of Rhombus of Ruin.

Something I've been thinking about when it comes to Loboto is the fact that he was lobotomized. Now, to be fair, I don't know a lot about the after effects for the procedure (and would welcome further enlightenment on the subject), but what I do know is that the patients tend to be complacent and disinterested to a fault (for example, Honey Sugarman in Bojack Horseman), almost like they themselves are vaguely aware of their own existence, but not much more than that. The damage to the prefrontal cortex causes problems with essentially what makes a person a person. But Loboto seems to be an extreme exception to the rule, if he even follows it. His personality is flagrantly on display, and now that the Psychonauts have taken the steps to restore him, a process that I'm not sure is possible with the physical nature of a lobotomy, it makes me think that maybe he never really had one. It's more along the lines of that extreme learned helplessness that he may have experienced in the hospital. Basically, maybe he has the capacity to re-engage that part of his mind, and possibly even become psychic once again. He got his moral compass back, and if it really is just a case of a puzzle to be solved, then who knows what he could become

There is one thing which I see like a missed opportunity in the franchise: the censors. I really would have like to see a different design for every mind. It makes sense to see them as bureaucrats in Sasha's mind, but making them looks always the same for every characters is a bit "unrealistic" (in the contest of a cartoonish videogame about the human mind). Probably giving them different designs would have required too much time and it could have confused the player.

Haven't got the chance to play Rhombus of Ruin (and won't be getting that chance any time in the foreseeable future) but I really thought that it immediately gave the cartoonish cackling insane henchman from the first game a much-needed sense of humanity, and made me feel even a little bit guilty for using this interrogation technique that basically amounts to gaslighting him for "my" own goals.

As to bring up something about relationship abuse, a common thing that I notice when listening to therapists online is that abusers typically try to play with the emotions of others and typically infantilize a person to make them irrational and prone to outbursts, abusers also come up as trying to come off as superior, and will take advantage of your weaknesses
@unrellated2 жыл бұрын
The actual confrontation with the mysterious abuser happens in a mental construct resembling his old lair at Thorny Towers. The place where he had been under Oleander's employ. His mind seemed to be drawing parallels to that experience. One point of interest is if you manage to glitch your way into a part of the tower that's supposed to be out of bounds, you can see his abuser completely unhidden. It's also mentioned after the fact that someone had set up mental booby traps in Loboto's mind to deter psychic espionage. Presumably, that's why the mouth-related elements are so openly hostile.
@unrellated2 жыл бұрын
And something about Sasha's Office Construct, you can talk to the generic employees in the room you start in. They all say nothing but bland, corporate-related statements that don't seem especially thought-out. Lines like "I am fairly compensated for my work." or "My boss is tough, but fair." Because they're just vague abstractions of a person thought up for the sole purpose of being a collective of nameless extras to form the idea of a crowd. They don't have specific identities.

Slight spoilers for those that haven't seen Psychonauts 2 or Psychonauts The Rhombus of Ruin. Though, if you're reading this, I'm going to guess you've at least seen one of the two. Just like how there are ways where a Psychic can loose their psychic abilities, like what Dr. Loboto experienced when he lobotomized, I wonder if there are ways for a psychic to regain their psychic abilities once loosing them. Perhaps if we get a Psychonauts 3 or a DLC to Psychonauts 2 (those options might not happen, but you never know), perhaps Sasha finds Dr. Loboto and brings him back, just to be sure that he's reformed before letting him go into the world. While Loboto is in the lab with Sasha, one of the machines malfunctions, sending something like a part of the machine, or maybe some chemical within the machine toward Loboto. It doesn't seem to harm him, but Raz can see several psychic abilities happening around any area Loboto is. When Loboto notices it after a while, he thinks Raz or Sasha is responsible for the psychic stuff going on around him and asks them to stop. Upon realizing that it's coming from himself, Loboto quickly falls into a panic attack, items in the room swarming around him as he looses control. The last time someone besides himself knew he had psychic abilities (his parents), they sent him away to get rid of the abilities. People knowing he has psychic abilities means being lobotomized in his mind and he doesn't want to go through that again. So Raz must enter his mind one final time to help him with the trauma he experienced after being sent away by his parents and help him regain control of his psychic abilities. Psychonauts 3 or a DLC for Psychonauts 2, like I said eariler, might never happen, but it's a fun idea I have.

Honestly I think that since you mention abuse, I am going to say that a missing moral compass was in a sense representing his codependency on others, a lot of abusers will put their victims through all sorts of stuff to break down the ability to differentiate right and wrong, the ability to differentiate right and wrong on their own is considered the moral compass, the doubts and regrets and censors coming in this level represents the fact that we have been able to fully restore their ability to control the direction in their life, by restoring loboto’s ability to understand what is and isn’t acceptable behavior, the lobotomy in the previous game in memory might refer to a symbolic sense of losing the basic functions that make a human being, loboto was most likely a victim his whole life

Having grown up with one parent getting her psychology degree, I really enjoy both the games being built with actual psychology concepts in mind, and that you take the time to really dig deeply into even the incidental characters, like the campers. Both trips into Loboto's mind were really interesting, and I agree with hoping there will be another game where we can see any additional progress he's made, as well as one other thing; he mentions in his post game dialogue that he has a child at the camp, and knowing what he's come from, it would be interesting to see how that's shaped his own relationship and whether he has or will break away from his parents' behaviour towards him....or maybe it was just what he thought would get him out the door.

There was the ending line by Dr. Lobato that he was going back to whispering rocks to pick up his son. I don’t know why, but that instantly makes me think the Bobby zilch might be his son. We all have fears that dictate how we act. I've had two notable negative encounters that still partly linger with me, but I'm grateful I have an almost towns worth of individuals in my corner. Also part of the problem atleast in my case because of my autism and relatively shortish stature, I have been harassed/victimized in the past, and me being a bit more emotionally elevated certain events and stimuli can amplify it. Also I think I have more doubts then regrets, not to mention atleast a decent amount of censors, I assume.

What I don't understand is how Gristol was able to mess with Loboto's head as much as he did. Was it with words alone or did he used one of Otto's gadgets? Hollis Forsythe said so herself that he's no even psychic, so how did he he do it? Looking forward to the two-part trip inside of her mind by the way. Any idea when that one's going to be available to the public? 🤔
@GamingUniversityUoG2 жыл бұрын
That is a question I've been mulling over personally. It is possible Gristol simply scared him to the point of making a 'tormentor' mental construct. Or there could be a 3rd party involved. Who knows.

@@GamingUniversityUoG Otto. I know this sounds crazy, but Otto just feels so off. He’s the only member of the psychic 7 whose mind we don’t explore, he never developed a serious relationship with another member like the others did (Bob and Helmut, Cassie and Compton, Ford and Lucrecia). And every mental version of Otto we see in the other psychic’s heads paint him as an egotistical jerk, showing they never liked him that much. Something feels off to me about how “Nick” was able to get into Truman’s office and bring him out, considering he was a non psychic mailman, and that Truman hated “Nick’s” guts. But there was one way into the office that didn’t require specific ID permission: Otto’s tunnels. Sure, “Nick” could’ve just figured out the code, but more critical evidence is how Lucrecia became a member of the psychic seven. The person who brought her was none other than Otto himself, whereas pretty much every other member was brought by Ford. This implies some relation between them. He also plans on mass producing miniature versions of the Astralathe, the very thing that started this whole mess. Sorry for sounding like Boyd here, I just hate Otto, and he is extremely suspicious.

You have a DEEP review of games on a very cerebral level. You cover the Remedy-verse, and Psychonauts, but if I may make a suggestion for you on another very cerebral level: Play: "Hellblade, Senua's Sacrifice," and journey through a person's adventure who has a very HIGH level of Dementia. To me the game was very cerebral. The Logic puzzles, and the fact that literally everything in the game is totally in her mind from start to finish will give you cause for many episodes of reviewing various different aspects of the game and her trials. Also... it was rather easy to Platinum in the first run through. It might intrigue you at the game makers consulted with doctors and people actually dealing with dementia to get the fullest effect in the game. And this is an important suggestion if you play the game: Wear a headset. It is important to get the binaural audio that the game provides in order to get the full effect of the game.

I'm predicting that Loboto will remove his shower cap of safety after sorting out his trauma and getting it under control and perhaps even join the Psychonauts. After all, nearly all of the prominent Psychonauts are deeply damaged individuals. Now this is reaching conspiracy theory levels, but: Perhaps he will replace Otto Mentallis
