"After listening for almost twenty-five years to the stories my patients tell me about sociopaths who have invaded and injured their lives, when I am asked, “How can I tell whom not to trust?” the answer I give usually surprises people. The natural expectation is that I will describe some sinister-sounding detail of behavior or snippet of body language or threatening use of language that is the subtle giveaway. Instead, I take people aback by assuring them that the tip-off is none of these things, for none of these things is reliably present. Rather, the best clue is, of all things, the pity play. The most reliable sign, the most universal behavior of unscrupulous people is not directed, as one might imagine, at our fearfulness. It is, perversely, an appeal to our sympathy." -- Martha Stout, The Sociopath Next Door

The Inuits tacitly assume that kunlangeta is irremediable. Another idea: Ramming speed! Humans love incorporating a strategy from their naval warfare into spaceship battles; ramming speed. Often propelling their ships as fast as it can go, and charging straight into their target. Surprisingly enough, humanity's tactic of ramming their ships into those of their enemies has proven effective, as a small merchant ship can serve as a torpedo and destroy an entire freighter. Why humans use this tactic despite the danger of loss of life, we don't know. It comes chiefly from the human values of martyrdom, Believing that their death with save the lives of more- at least usually. Some humans are simply so zealous they are willing to lay down their lives for a cause. And their ship. Probably not what the actual script would look like, but I would love to see this as a video...

I dislike this story immensely. Don't get me wrong, it was entertaining and the narration was excellent. But I have two distinct issues. The first is how far the story goes to completely dehumanize psychopaths and the like. Yes, in the story the antagonist had done some horrible, sickening things, but actions like those were born FROM the antagonist's own sickness. Being afflicted with a condition like that doesn't make you a terrifying, inhuman animal, it means you're sick. Not in the disgusting, "you're a monster" kind of way, but in the genuine, mental disorder kind of way. Even after committing such atrocious acts as the ones described, these individuals should be treated with caution and pity, not abject terror and hatred. My second issue ties into the first. After going to lengths to establish that the antagonist is an evil monster, it then engrandizes that same supposed evil. The author describes their ability to instill fear in all those around them passively, and how he gives off an aura of menace and danger. While this is indeed something that would occur in those that know the antagonist's crimes and misdeeds, the main two characters are swept up in feelings of dread before they have any knowledge of just why he's a prisoner. All in all it feels like the author simultaneously glorifies, and is terrified of, mental illness.

At about the half way point i felt similar to how you did. (haven't finished it so i can't be sure that changes), but i will say having worked for a person with mental illness (it wasn't psychopathy to my knowledge mind you) that was openly malicious there was something about them that made them innately unsettling to be around, to the point in which having previously done the job for a year and a half i couldn't stand another 6 months because the tension at all times was suffocating whether or not someone knew the situation before hand. Being around someone like that turns the situation into a ticking time bomb scenerio where you know that their going to do something and it may not be today or tomorrow or next month but something bad is going to happen and everyone involved can feel it, but no one can do something about it. Given the captain and the crew have likely never been in that exact situation i could see them over reacting and give some lee way to their reactions. Body language can be unnerving especially if it isn't what you are expecting or used to and when you take that kind of job most of your training is on picking up signals and the body language of those you assist and especially if you aren't used to it, it can be mind bogglingly stressful and unnerving. That being said this isn't a good representation of mental illness but some kind of worst case scenario played up to 11. That is clearly hannibal lector in the cell not just some guy born with psychopathy. and the humans are space orcs concept really isn't about exploring the nuances of humans but rather drawing a clear depiction of what if humans where the scifi horror movie monster, so giving a dark/negatively biased take on an already complex and possibly dark/complex if negative aspect of humans I.e. Mental illness isn't going to be traditionally fair to begin with but rather a what is the maximum scary realisitically possible from said scenerio.

@@henrypaleveda7760 Diamond Willow's read was good, as she normally does good work; however, no i did not really like this particular story. I feel the author could have taken better inspiration from real life criminally insane cases and that the outcome was kind of rushed and lazy. I also think the cannibalism and incest reveal was a little too corny and that if they just wanted to show a deranged human that put others off their guard they would have been better off using rabies, or fairly accurately Kuru (a variant of Creutzfeldt-Jakob Disease (which is a side effect of cannibalism)). both of which are maladies that would have fit far better with things that put humans on edge. I really do feel that the author both missed the mark on what they chose to do and could have chose better.

What irks me about the story is that it's unrealistic. So this dude gives away Evil Sociopath Vibes. How did he get away? How could anyone lower their guard around him? This is not how neither sociopathy nor anything works The danger of antisocial personality disorder comes from the fact you can't recognize them. They don't look different, they don't act different, they don't give you bad vibes. That's why most of them are not shut in mental facilities. In most cases they're indistinguishable from us. It's impossible to tell how many of them turn into crime because we don't know how many of them are highly functioning members of our society. I know it's shocking but they're not all evil So this is how a sociopathic criminal would run away: 1. He would make himself look harmless 2. He would befriend with those who don't fear him that much 3.??? 4. Profit

Cannibalism? The greatest taboo? Not really. Victorians ate mummies because of (among other things) a very old belief that eating something gives you its property. It wasn't that long ago. We're not as civilized as we would like to be Not to mention that in many cultures cannibalism was / is contextualized as paying respect for the dead. We have burial ceremonies, certain tribes eat their beloved dead ones What we now see as taboo doesn't always reflect on our instinctive values. There are however a taboos which appears in every human culture: violence against your ingroup We've always been more open to hurting the "others". Different nation, different religion, different skin colour, different football team fan... It's all fair game but never touch those who are a part of our "tribe" That would be a more fitting issue to touch in this story. Psychopaths are not ~evil~ because they do ~evil~ things. They simply don't see the reason why you need to follow the "don't hurt our tribe" rule. They might have two or three people they care about. Antisocial personality disorder is a spectrum - not an on and off switch. But they don't care about the rest. They treat members of their ingroup like we treat members of an outgroup

Like tapeworms and that the process of healing and removing them is brutal, primitive, and quite barbaric in the eyes of the general space populace. just monstrous, kind of like the medication is a paralysis agent to other species or considered acidic but humans digest this as "medication." and end up fine, rather than dead

I believe I have certain Psychopathic thoughts at times but it’s against my nature, and I have a strong will to avoid consequences, punishments, pain, and I’m empathic so fear drives me more than the other way around. But this was a fun and interesting story, reminds me of my time working as a officer in a correctional facility

Weird, I must stress his a few things 1) Incest - Nothing wrong with incest, as long as it does not result in a child. It was consensual, because if it was not he would be charged with rape, which is not mentioned in the story. 2) Cannibalism - Nothing wrong with cannibalism, this one isn't even illegal as opposed to incest, as long as the living consented to his body being used in this way it should not be a crime. Worst thing he did was just eat people, certainly not worth such an extreme punishment as imprisonment, a fine would suffice. He clearly didn't murder those people and then ate them, as in that case he would be charged with murder, yet there are no mentions of such a thing in this story. After all killing people is worse than eating (already dead) people. For the "crimes" he committed I think the peoples reactions are a bit extreme.

I thought that myself at first but then I remembered that I shouldn't look at things too clinical and removed from my humanity And then I realized he is imprisoned because both of those things most likely weren't consensual (subtext implicated so) wich would definitely register as the worst taboos
