Her falling deep into the darkness references the album cover, where if you look closely it's as if she's underwater and there's an open door. I think it made perfect sense to put it in that Scene

The last part of the video with her being chased by him and the cut scenes of her falling represents her falling in love something she's trying to escape, but which is inevitable.

A little info for what the video is about/the concept behind it, and about the song title. 'Chihiro' is named after the lead character of the Hayao Miyazaki film Spirited Away. In the beloved 2001 movie, a 10-year-old girl named Chihiro moves with her parents and enters a spirit realm where her parents turn into pigs. The film follows Chihiro as she gains a new understanding and appreciation of life as she tries to save herself and her family. For the song, she “envisioned a dream-like narrative” with “long, dark hallways and shutting of doors” in order to “symbolize the different corners of the mind,” according to a press release of the new music video. This could be seen as the musician and her costar Nat Wolff run away from each other through several rooms and even fight a few times in dark hallways and eventually outdoors. In the music video, the pair just can’t seem to get rid of each other no matter how they try, which Eilish said was a representation of their “inescapable connection.” They appear to battle it out in the grass for the last few moments of the music video, before the music video ends with them sitting together in the grass during a sunset. Eilish said this was meant to show the “external expression of an internal push and pull, as our deepest feelings of fear, love, or desire inevitably catch up to us, no matter how hard we try to run away,”

Billie is an amazing performer. She puts everything into her music. Both the song lyricism. and her music videos which often times she designs herself she has a lot of input into her music and how it’s presented to the public. I know this because of watched videos of her talking about it. I know a lot of her backstory because we have a mutual friend. I don’t normally share this but I went through a lot of childhood abuse and I’m now 51 years old. I’m a male. I’m Australian and I now suffer from serious mental health issues which I optimistically battle every day which is not easy to do. I have three children who I rarely see because me and their mother find it very difficult to get along due to her being a person who subscribes to the idea of stigmatism with mental illness and treats me like I’m a freak because I have bipolar disorder and dissociative identity disorder panic disorder and severing anxiety which can be very crippling but I’m actively trying to change my narrative. I don’t want to live inside my head because I know that the narrative inside my head is not reality. I grew up with entire family and at the age of five years old I decided I was gonna be more mature than my family and break that cycle and I have done so I am the most peaceful loving caring empathic person that I know and I show that love towards my children every time I talk to them and they feel loved because of it because I do not want to carry on that cycle any more. I want to break that snowball and smash to pieces and I think I’m doing a good job considering the limited time that I spend with my children. However, I still struggle on a daily basis with depression anxiety and suicidal ideology. And most of all I love music and I’ve always believed that it heals. I listen to it for hours a day plus I’m currently learning to play the guitar and whilst I’m not very good yet I’m getting there and I’m finding it therapeutic as well I have bought a ticket to see Billie Eilish next year in Australia and I’m so excited because it will be the first time I get to see her alive and I can’t wait to see how her new album hit me. Hard and soft is going to pan out live I’m excited to see how it presents itself on stage. I’m sure she’s going to nail it wholeheartedly just likes you attacks everything else in life again. This is another video of yours that I have loved and I’ve only watched two so far today so thank you appreciate it. Keep them coming again if you miss my last comment on your tale of journey and screech video. I would love to see a reaction video to ✨AURORA✨ And song It Happened Quiet look for the live performance video. It’s amazing her body language the way she loses herself and her music. She is like a like a child like fairy creature both in her music and as an individual human being in real life she is a dear friend of mine who I made in 2015 and her hometown of Bergen Norway. And as you say she is a creator with a capital C. !!

first off. great analysis. billie is almost frustratingly consistent in not explaining meanings. she wants the listener/viewer to draw those lines. this song is based on chihiro, the main character in a film called "spirited away", an anime she grew up watching and an oscar winning film. i had a preteen daughter back then and i've seen it dozens of times and i love it. there are definitely references to that film in the lyrics and, to a lesser degree, in the video. beyond that, we all just get to sit with it and make it about whatever it makes us feel. we have billie's permission to do that.

that movie/anime taught me more about compassion, understanding and morals than my so called strict conservative upbringing. first time time i seen spirited away it blew my mind and that was 21 years ago and still sing it's praises. i can honestly say, if i had to pick a top 5 movie list, it would be in it.

Great reaction. Yes the pattern you point out is unmistakable. Billie's music and visuals are presented in such patterns in many other music videos too. They repeat around a core theme unifying what seem like unrelated cycles. This video has some superficial visual references to the Chihiro anime. The deeper connection is in the lyrics about struggle for idenitity.

In the behind the scenes for this video, she talks about the chase scene representing when you try to ignore something that is inevitable. Such a great ambiguity in here ripe with metaphor. I love her work so much. Psychologist here. 👋

Okay yes this was the best interpretation of this song and movie and trust me I’ve seen them all. I usually have a lot of little points to add but this time basically only one. “That’s when you found me” she’s feeling herself and she’s on her own, so to speak. To me, she is the one who found herself. But then, when the role reversal happens with her being chased (which of course would happen just when you’re starting to find yourself), the cycle starts anew, as you observed, and she is trying to run away from that, but it merely adds to the build up aspect of the cycle. I like that the sunrise at the end seems to symbolise hope, as well, in connection to what you said. And I thought it was interesting how that within the final cycle of building tension, you mention how it could be foreplay, because in such a cycle that is exactly what can be confused with it, considering the following explosion and honey moon. How easily it can be confused, and how difficult a cycle it is to escape once that is the pattern one knows.

The dark parts of what looked like Billie falling at the end? It was a recreation of the album cover this song came from. Not sure if you’ve ever seen the album cover..but its Billie sinking in a pool of water with a an opened door also opened into the water.

She's so determined to chase someone she loves, even when she knows it's toxic, that she's shutting off all of the better avenues she could persue (closing the doors, which may lead to the light) and just going straight into darkness. He's, clearly, supposed to represent a narcissitic partner - one who likes to be chased but rarely wants to give her his time, unless he needs something, is benefitting from and able to use her. As soon as she reaches him, he's gone again, but waits for her to chase him and then, blames her for being the problem, before things calm down and they head toward what seems like the light and happiness... Until she finds herself alone and abandoned, wandering aimlessly. Eventually, she begins to just enjoy the walk and light, until he comes back around because narcissists can't allow their partners to be too comfortable and happy without them, as it hurts their ego and makes their insecurities worse. Also, they cannot lose control. So, he chases her down again and tackles her, bringing her down and under his control again. She fights back - the usual cyclical clashes you have with narcissists - and the flickers to her drowning is how she's so attached to him, that she's drowning but just lets it continue because she can't detach from him, as if he's her anchor. She doesn't know anything else.
