BKM I’ve been living in Melbourne for the past year now, her are some tips: peppers are “capsicums”, mc Donald’s is called “maccas”, thongs are like flip flops here (this one confused me a hell of a lot too). DO NOT disrespect vegimite, Tim Tams or milo. The emergency number for ambulances, police and fire is 000. It might be best for you to take a few surfing lessons to avoid being called a shark biscuit. It is also probably worth researching the aboriginals of Australia because it is mentioned quite a lot. Football or footy refers to Aussie rules, an interesting but very entertaining game (imagine rugby with a much bigger, circular pitch without as many rules.). Hope this helps

I forgot my debit card back home when I went to Thailand to visit my brother. I did not think to research if credit cards were accepted everywhere and I wound up calling my mom and asking her to put money in my brother's bank account so I could survive for 2 weeks. I will NEVER forget that lesson!

Great tips! Unlocking my phone has been a hassle in Canada, but i'm SO glad I did it! Another thing not to forget is to check the visa requirements of all the places you want to visit. Some places, you can't get the visa on arrival (or even anywhere that isn't your home country). It can ruin your multi-countries trip if you don't check ahead.

Elizabeth Travels ... i will be traveling for the first time and going to indonesia starting in jakarta for 1 week then 3 hours south to bandung for 3 weeks. i have researched visa requirments and will go with visa on arrival . just a question on experience with visa on arival in indonesia. if you have any.. since its my first time travelling you can imagine how much my mind is thinking about the visa on arrival lol. the biggest worry is me arriving and getting sent back . i guess you could just say im a little insecure about it. if you have any experience in regards to this could you please advise as this would easily set my mind at ease. manny thanks. regards
@ElizabethTravelsNow8 жыл бұрын
I've never been to indonesia so I don't have specific advice about that. But there are places, like for instance Laos where you can get the visa on arrival, but will need a passport picture with you. And sometimes you need to pay a specific amount in US Dollars that you need to bring with you - and the exchange rates at the border are terrible. Read up on the requirements before going, and you should be fine :)

I'm curious, what's the difference in the passport & visa. Why would you need both, if you're on vacation?
@ElizabethTravelsNow8 жыл бұрын
You need the passport to travel, some countries also require a Visa to get in. Think of your passports as ID and the visa as the authorization to be there.

Excellent information. It's always welcome to get information from someone who knows from actual experience what they're talking about. If your bank or credit card is actually compromised, the issuer will cancel it immediately. Many card issuers will only mail a replacement card to the home address they have on record. Depending on where you are traveling, It can take weeks to get your replacement card. If this is a bank card, and you don't have a cash line already established on a credit card, you can have one hell of a time getting any cash.

I'd add translating any medial conditions/ allergies you may have into the new language before you leave. I actually forgot to do this and thankfully nothing happened to me but I can imagine it would be super helpful to give your waiter a list of ingredients/ show a doctor a list of medication you can't take in their own language and you'd be a lot safer than just relying on hand gestures high school French lessons to get you by.

These are awesome tips! When I first went traveling my bank (Citi Bank) kept blocking my card every time I entered a new country. I had told them ahead of time that I would be traveling for six months and what countries I would be going to, and they still kept blocking it! Luckily my Korean card worked literally every where I went and was never blocked lol. Your tips on having a back up card among other bank issues is great.

Definitely get good travel insurance and a back up plan!! Whilst we were in the Philippines my appendix ruptured and the closest hospital did not except insurance as a form of payment (they required cash) therefore that set us back a lot of money which luckily could be lent to us. Another tip for this make sure you have a local sim card so that you can contact anybody in case of this sort of emergency! Amy & Yas
@thesadtraveler68118 жыл бұрын
The sim card was the first thing I learned while I was in Europe! I decided to never by service because I was only in countries for 1-2 weeks at a time. Looking back, not the best plan.

If you take medications regularly, be sure to make a list of the medications with both brand name and generic name along with the dose you need. Several years ago, I was in Thailand when protesters took over the airports and I had to spend an extra 2 weeks that I hadn't planned on (poor me, right?). Anyway, with my list of meds, I was able to go to a pharmacy and get everything I needed for those extra weeks. In the process, I learned that the price was about the same as my insurance copayment in the US.

Hmm a few things I thought of while I was watching your video.... Three do a "feel at home" option on their PAYG and monthly plans where you can travel in certain countries and you get charged as if you were still in the UK. This doesn't help if you need a local contact number, but if you need a phone to make calls to home or for data use, that could be an option for a short term traveler (I think three has a limit to how long you can use the service). If you're UK based, I know most of the providers will unlock your phone for free and it's done online. They say it can take up to 28 days to get the unlock code, but I've never waited longer than 24 hours. You do need to keep the code safe though as you have to enter it the first time you use a different SIM card. If you suspended your home service so you can keep your phone number. when you return...don't lose the SIM card while you're away! I tape my UK SIM to a card from my wallet I don't intend on using while I'm away and either keep it in my wallet, or store it someplace safe - but always taped to a card since it's so small. Or you could stick it on a memory card case if you carry those around. If you're going abroad for a length of time, change your home address with your bank, etc, to someone you trust to open your post for you and scan important things. I actually did this as a job for a friend one Summer. i stayed at their house to cat sit/house sit, and then I would tell him the return addresses on post and he would tell me if he needed me to open and scan things for him to look at. From 1997 until 2008, I used my mom's address even though I wasn't living with her (I was at uni and then had apartments) just for the sake of not having to change my address loads of times! (although that did become interesting when my car was broken into and the police went to my mom's house to inform me because my car was still registered to her house......) Another thing I would recommend looking into is cloud based file storage. I use Dropbox to back up my phone (over wifi) so I don't have to worry about losing photos taken on it. So many people back up the photos they take on a camera onto an external, but you don't think about the pictures you take on your phone! I really feel like as women, we are being held ransom by birth control when we travel. When I visited my now-husband in 2008 and decided to extend my stay, I needed to get BC as I had only brought with me 3 months worth and I researched the heck out of how to get BC as a visitor. I wrote a blog post about it back in 2009 and it's still my most viewed post.....which is quite telling, I think! Even if you pack the amount you need, I think it's a good thing before you go to research where you'll be and how to obtain BC just in case you lose your pills or extend your stay.

do you have to get the vaccinations?? is it mandatory to the point where you can't get in the country if you dont have them? can you get vaccinated in the country you're going to?
@cathrynrosalie12898 жыл бұрын
no, most vaccinations aren't mandatory! some i would highly highly recommend though because it's such a huge health risk if you don't have it (e.g hepatitis)! Google what vaccinations you need for a specific country or consult the specialists of a health centre for tropics (or general health centre, depending on where you come from and where you're going)! and definitely get the vaccinations in your own country. they speak your language, you should have your trusted doctor anyways and depending on where you are from may even have health insurance:)
