Foei and White from GMMTV were bullying/harassing First during Safehouse last week. An apology was issued, but was it enough?
In addition, after a game in which the housemates were told to make themselves look unrecognizable, one of the actors did so in a very questionable way. Fans were outraged and said that it was racist. What are your thoughts? Were the apologies enough??

First looked so uncomfortable. This season was such a shitshow. First and Khao basically hung out together because they seemed to feel safe with each other. Tay was so confused and was only supposed to be there for only a short time but came back after this drama. He seemed very protective of First after that, especially since First was his school junior I think.

Added context, when First was younger - before he was famous, he had a post that seemed to indicate he had come out as gay, it was deleted when he joined the industry. If the people in his personal life know he's gay, this takes on a greater meaning - explains the harassment even more.

the way a lot of gmmtv actors who have acted in bls have said smth homophobic or transphobic at some point and either tried to push it under the rug or posted a forced apology just makes it clear how these companies are just profiting off our community without putting in the effort to actually teach the actors about it. first looked so uncomfortable like the man didnt even know what the joke even meant neither did tay and the way white was joking about doing those things to him after the one person he feels safe around leaves like that is so f*cked up in itself. now i understand why first and khaotung were visibly spending time alone away from the rest of them bcoz ik ppl say it bcoz khaotung is an introvert but he was alot more interactive in other season where he was comfortable with other members.

On the blackface issue, I kind of agree that it's a different culture and they don't have the same sort of racist baggage we have here in the states. However, that doesn't mean race and colorism isn't an issue in Thailand. If u pay attention, you'll notice that all the most virtuous characters in bl are always very fair skinned, sometimes they're even referred to by their fairness as a way to communicate that they're a likable, moral character. And criminals, thugs, bullies, etc are almost always noticeably darker in complexion. The bl youtuber Moonconsort has mentioned this in several of her videos, and there are plenty of others here on KZbin who talk about colorism in Asian countries. So yes, it's definitely not the same racism as western countries, but it's still racist and gmmtv should not be exempt from having to worry about skin tone communicating virtue in their programs.

@@annachristinanotyet4678 yeah, I'm not a historian but from what I've read in many cultures that's the basis for it, but over time we start to see it transition from discrimation against the poor and working classes to being based purely on skin tone. I know tay & khao are with him and that they follow him around making sure to watch his back but you can see the absolute disbelief and shock in their faces as soon as they made the “joke”. the other seasons were so peaceful and brought a lot of cute & funny moments and more importantly made the actors grow closer together. but this is beyond toxic, I really hope gmmtv will not continue working with them especially since they’re working in the BL field like ??? The problem with all of this is that is not the first time it happens, in fact it seems to be common practise for some actors in the industry. In fact, there's someone sitting at that table who should have said something instead of laughing like a clown because he himself had problems in the past for being a homophobe and bullying a castmate, he should have learnt and taken the opportunity to do things better, but all he did was laugh. I get some are young but others are near their 30s and still refusing to learn, and the worst thing is that they have had controversies before or have witnessed them because they happened to close friends (for example Mond and Tay are friends with Krist who already had a joke like this backfiring). So it's clear it's a problem with their society, blackface too, actors with dark skin have been mocked ( like Apo or Jennie) before so I'm not surprised about the costume, what really bothers me is that the GMM thinks there's no problem with airing these things, I get it with interviews, fanmeetings and stuff because you can't control everything that comes out of the actors' mouths but on things they upload they should at least have a filter 😑

Love this concept of BL and kpop news! As for everything going on in safehouse this season, I'm not that surprised tbh. I feel like GMMTV got passes on a lot of things because they had the monopoly on bls in thailand, and international/lgbtq+ fans let a lot slide as they took into account where thailand was as a society. However, as the genre progresses and we get more bls that are less tropey, and serve the community better, ggmtv are being expected to catch up to that. Except they're failing to do so and are being rightly called out.

Thailand social classes are extremely present in day to day interactions and they are integrated within the Thai language itself, for example, we all aware of the "P" they say before someone's name like "P'Tay", the "P" refers to Phi-Chaai/Phi-Saao (which means older brother/sister) so by saying "P" before the name acknowledge the fact that you consider this older person to be close to you, that you respect them and their life experience and knowledge. Also, you do not reprimand or correct someone in public in Thailand, if you want to do it it's done in private with that person only, doing it in public is considered rude, offensive and potentially insulting regardless if you are right to do so, this is called "losing face". So in the context of this situation at the dinner table, you need to understand that Foei and White are with Tay the oldest there and inspire respect from the newcomers and the youngest at the table. Since it's a tv show, reality show I will add, it's simply unthinkable for the youngsters to start arguing and make the oldest "lose face" not only to their peers but on camera as well, even Tay doesn't do it and he's the oldest there. It's worth nothing that the show is not live 24 hours a day so it's possible they have discussed this among themselves and/or with the production off camera. That said, the whole situation is obviously wrong and we can see that most of them at the table agree with that. Personally, I would have appreciated that GMMTV took this opportunity to address this live correctly with some kind of a round table maybe where Foei and White could have sincerely apologized not only to First but to the whole house. I think the impact would have been more meaningful. Regarding the black face situation, in all honesty I didn't hear of this before watching the video so I might be lacking some details here. But by acknowledging a black face in general we are acknowledging that the person who is not black intentionally disguised themself as a black person, this is how the term black face started where white people knowingly disguised themselves as black or someone with darker skin with the intent of making fun of them. It started in the US due to the social inequalities and racial tensions between white and black people. So the intent is for me very important in addition to the contexts in which we judge these. And this happened not in the US, not in Europe, but in a small South East Asian reality show with young participants, one is only 17 in this season. I do not know how many black people actually live in Thailand but it's doubtful that the actor intentionally decided to disguise himself as a black person in this game, it's more likely that he went with a camouflage look more than anything which was the purpose of the game. Side note, in the same picture shown, we see Tay in the background with a make up that people could identified as a Japanese Geisha, did he try to do a cultural appropriation during the game? Just an opened question... The reason we call this black face and yell racism is because of our bias western view on this issue. Let me be clear, I condemn racism in all its forms, what I say is we have a responsibility to be prudent when dealing with other cultures and consider all the facts and contexts first. In a more general note, Thailand is not a developed country yet, although they might look like it, they are politically instable with "coups d'états" every couple of years. They do not have free speech as we know it as westerners, some censorship is still present to this day, and a vast part of the population might not or does not have electricity nor internet. Traditions and religion are still very present in their culture and yet they are still trying to address some of their social issues through their TV shows and movies to encourage changes. If you haven't seen "The Effect", I would recommend it, it's only 3 episodes but it addresses gay rape, mental health and suicide. Don't forget that Thailand produces TV shows and movies for its Thai population first, they indeed have an international audience but it's a side effect mostly, if not only, due to the popularity of the bl genre specifically. I think it's fantastic that Thailand and other Asian countries are producing these bl shows and movies to give visibility and normality to the LGBTQ community within those countries while help promoting respect and acceptance at the same time. But expecting these countries to be exactly like western countries and act as we want them to act and judge them based on our own bias towards our own social issues is not the way to go. Their reality is different and we need to stay opened minded and assess everything before making harsh judgments and condemning them. Let's have an educational approach on this rather than an accusational one.

Thailand residents may not know about "blackface" and the racist connotations of those portrayals, but they certainly know about creating/writing/producing series, in which the portrayals of darker brown skinned characters are deemed as non appealing, less than, and something that you don't ever want to be grouped in as a member of that certain class in that country. I mean, out of all the colors they could find, they provided black face paint for their performers to use?

I’m a historian that specializes in American history in the 18th and 19th century with a focus on Black culture, fashion and foodways. Minstrel shows in the 19th century made it to England, France, China, Japan, Germany, Australia, Netherlands, Spain, South Africa, India, and throughout South America. Minstrel shows and blackface were America’s first cultural exports. For some of these places it was the first depiction the average citizen had seen of a Black person. Minstrel shows portrayed Black folks as childlike, with low intelligence, bad hygiene, lazy, animal like, unattractive, some characters were over sexualized, and others were sexless. Most countries around the world are just starting to have real conversations about racism towards black folks. East and Southeast Asia are some of the last regions where you could still go see Blackface on stage. I could believe the ignorance argument up into around 2016 but now there have been too many scandals across Asia for people to not know. I call BS. If it was a mistake why did the pair the black face paint with a black curly wig?

Also, I found it cringe that First had to be there for the "apology". What can he possibly say but that it wasn't that bad and he's OK with them? He is forcibly put on a public platform by his bosses, so he has no choice but to make light of it. And to be honest, he may be "all right" in the same sense of a scene in The Eclipse, where a gay character says something to the effect "Don't worry about protecting me, I'm used to being bullied," in a matter-of-fact voice. This is not to claim anything about First's sexuality. I have no knowledge of that, but for whatever reason, he was chosen as a victim of this.

I'm glad you are doing this news. Other than following some of the BL actors on Instagram or Twitter I don't watch or pay attention to most of the stuff beyond just the BL shows I watch. All the fan service and behind the scenes stuff is just something I'm not interested in. Now that being said, I am aware there are problematic things that go on here, just not always the specifics. There needs to be change and real apologies happening here. I really worry for the actors safety and well being (like First not the idiots that caused the problems). I know it's another country and a different culture but how is either of these situations ok? And if they really didn't get that it was wrong they need to learn why it is so they won't do something like this again and can make a sincere apology. When this stuff happens I honestly don't know how to feel because I love BL shows but I also take issues that the actors are like this. Change, we need change. I look forward to more updates like this so I can know what's going on. Thanks for these.

So ppl keep bringing up ignorance surrounding the black face situation and I, as a black person, have a question for you all that I posted as a reply but I really need to say this cause it gratin my nerves. Whats so funny about dark skin and an afro wig and who the hell else could be the butt of that fucking joke? Just because they don't know the context of black face does that make it ok for them to blatantly make fun of black ppl? They might not be participating with full or any knowledge of US black minstrelsy but that doesn't mean what they did wasn't racist. An ignorance held by a lot of non black people (and some bkack ppl tbh) has become very evident in this conversation and it needs to be discussed, anti-blackness shows up in very unmysterious ways and some of y'all aren't getting it. What the hell is so funny about black features? Nothing. So y are they acting like something is? Racism. It has nothing to do with the history of black face in the US, its just plain, straight up, honest to god racism on display. They CHOSE to dress up with distinctly black features and laughed they asses off when no other group of ppl could have been guessed except for black people by virtue of what they CHOSE to put on. If you don't see that I really think u should reevaluate how you see black ppl because its getting disturbing to watch ppl (honestly as they aways have) hiding behind ignorance while being made fun and asking very nicely (as not to be made out as an angry one) for ppl to listen and use their fucking comprehension skills.

Well, after the series "Call it What you like." Where it was a bit theme that BL Actors get SAED and Graped, it's truly insensetive and you would hope it doesn't happen in organizatons like GMMTV who despite all their bad apples in the bunch, including actors and actresses, I guess have a fairly good way to portrait themselves as most adorable Souls. But yeaht, that was uncomfortable atmosphere at the end and it makes me wonder if any of the others might have been a grape victim by this man or other Bosses and employees under the GMMTV roof...or if it was mere overdoneness of "not knowing how to react." or did they think "He's just jokign bout that." I mean if I know one thing from SK, compared to our wester "joke about kosher things" mentaltiy, Asia is kinda stuck in a humour that would have been last ok here in the 1990s if EVEN. But then again even in the mid 2010s windows here still were gay when they didn't work. I just hope that First and all the others have true friends there too, to confide in if something like this truly ever has happend, is happening or will ever happening to him/them.

After only being a viewer of these BLs, since April/May 2021, I am also not really shocked by the homophobia, sexism, classism, femmephobia, and racism that is pervasive in an industry, that is based on usually "straight" fictional male characters falling in love with one another. Everything is always brushed under the "it's just fantasy" rug, so anything and everything is "okay", until it isn't. I think with the Covid pandemic, and how everyone, across the globe, with access to the internet, and interest in finding something "new", discovered the BL genre, and we fell in love with the newness of it all. Until we started questioning things. I don't think that everything that some of us viewers have with this genre will "get better". It never hurts to point out the troubling things that will continue to happen within the industry, but let's remember the phrase, "If it ain't broke, don't fix it!" TPTB, who continue to make money off of these shows, and the viewers, they may not necessarily feel the need to try and adapt, but we as viewers, can make it hard as heck to keep them from not seeing, that something has to change.

Hi. I had a thought for a subject you might want to address here, and I'd really be interested in your opinion, especially given your professional background as a mental health professional: What do we get psychologically out of shipping? I am embarrassed at how I can get such warm fuzzies watching two strangers being or pretending to be close friends/boyfriends even when I know they are actors and have contracts that include fan service and maybe even skinship. Is it loneliness? Vicarious living? Currently ZeeNueNew is cropping up in my feeds and I enjoy watching them a lot. Is it like watching puppy videos? It has to be filling a very powerful psychological need in order to be fueling an entire industry and I wonder at that power and how/why fans constantly move from ship to ship with such hope and excitement and can feel so betrayed when ships die or are exposed to be fake.

Thailand's history has not been through event that make up black face, so people in the society never really understand the graveness of doing a blackface. I mean, if I'm being honest here, I'm Thai, born and raised in Thailand my whole life and I can't even say it with 100% sincerity that I find that blackface picture problematic even when I do realize that it can be taken badly by westerners. I agree that it is a problem because we have US audience so it's not a good image to go out. I can totally see that those boys didn't even have the slightest idea about how that blackface is going to be interpreted and so I don't doubt their intention to be on the innocent/ignorant side. I do see that they really don't want to mock anyone with that, but I'd say that they should have been more careful about these kind of things. For First's tho..... that's really awkward. I know the joke that they're talking about. It's a viral code language claimed to be used in the prison to target someone to be sexually harassed. I think it's not really appropriate to even refer to the joke like that cuz we all can see that the intention was to bully First.

I have a hard time with the "oh they didn't know" line when it comes to blackface. If you go beyond the picture they were painted their faces black and putting on afros and laughing hysterically. There is more context. Do they know about blackface in particular? Probably not. Did they find Blackness hilarious? Yes they did. It was racist. Period. That may be to harsh a line for some but there comes a point where coddling people's ignorance has to stop and we call things out for what they are. Black faces and hair should never be a punchline. That is what happened in this instance.

Also other companies are doing the work to educate themselves now that they have an international audience. GMM has a responsibility and it provided these actors with a potentially damaging scenario. It was wrong all around. It's not the first time either that they have had issues. So I am a bit tired of the excuses and dismissals at this point. They apologized fine but will they do something like this again based on history? Yes

On the blackface issue. People like to get mad and assume that everyone knows whatever they do, but different cultures/civilizations have different historical references and are usually not taught much about the issues outside of their own country. With only pictures to go off of (as I haven’t been able to find any video reference), I think that given the design of the game and the items that were available to use it is definitely possible that it wasn’t intentional. Hopefully they take this opportunity to educate themselves. On the homophobic/rape “jokes”, they have no excuse. I feel so bad for First having been subjected to that.

As a Black person, I'm getting really tired of this particular excuse. I feel like the items shouldn't have even been there in the first place. There are literal Black Thai people. Gmmtv even employs some. There have been multiple blackface scandals in Thailand over the years. Because of these things, I find it very hard to believe that nobody knew that having an afro wig, and black makeup available as part of that challenge could end up problematic. *I am not angry at this comment or commentor. I just had to say something.

@@erycnelson329 this is what I am saying too. The excuse doesn't work in the modern world. Khao and others figured out really quick they shouldn't do it. He even pulled First away from the others. He knew...and if he knew they knew too.

But then my question to you becomes whats so funny about dark skin and an afro wig and who the hell else could be the butt of that fucking joke? Im not trying to come off as mad at u but it pisses me off that ppl think that just because they don't know the context of black face that its ok for them to blatantly make fun of black features. I also think its a good time to point out ppls ignorance and clear blind spot at what happened here. What the hell is so funny about black features? Nothing. So y are they acting like something is? Racism. It has nothing to do with the history of black face in the US its just plain straight up honest to god racism on display. If you don't see that I really think u should reevaluate how you see black ppl.

You can find these jokes in Philippine television as well. They make fun of people with dark skin tones (this explains why most lotions you will find in drug stores and grocery stores here have some sort of skin whitening propertirs). Trans women are still made fun of. While i understand that people of color shouldn't have to educate anyone about things like this, i cant help but wonder who should educate them. The truth is, when it comes to lgbtq matters, asia is very much lagging behind our western friends. We need to do something about it but at the same time, it is hard to break what has already been accepted and normalized by society... About the grape issue, i understand how it could be a joke that has gone wrong, but the actors really did mess up there. It is only right for the actors and the compny (gmmtv) to issue an apology. Unfortunately, we can only hope that their apology is heartfelt and truthful.

I think it's hilarious that so many Americans think every other country should be aware of their past, and what is offensive to them now. I live in the country next door and I wasn't aware of blackface until just a couple years ago. My thought is, if there is no malicious intent no apology is needed as it is not related to Americas issues. I think apologising is fine once they learn what it means in America, but they shouldn't be shamed because it's not a racist thing in their country.

The amount if people saying that maybe they aren't doing black face in a way that they are mimicking the look of black people, because they believe they aren't as many black people inthe country for them to understand that, are wrong. It's obvious that he knew what he was doing, with the afro wig to the point of paint. Just because it's not in America ir Europe, doesn't make it different.

Blackface, Ouch, could have used any other colour with that curly hair wig. Benefit of a doubt, agree on that, maybe still not everyone knows about it, as hard as it is to imagine, since even some of their employees seem to somehow live on the Internet. But yeah, not my beer eitehr, I have seen some person of colour being offended enough they decided to watch all GMMTV Shows through reaction channels from now on. I guess, fair enough, as the british would say.But I am snowmen so same boat as you. Personally, when it comes to comments and apologies I miss GOOD EXAMPLES of people and companies who in the 20 and 21st century did it (allegedly) RIGHT? Like, we can go pointing fingers at eachother like a marry go around if you stuck in anykind of uncomfortable situation, which most likely isn't the way how it is portrait in "Show civil courage adds" in the first place you can be pretty much overdone. For example...here in Germany once in a blue moon or even rarer there are such ads who show people bieng bluntly racist towars black people and people of colour and how you c/should react...the thing is, the racisim I witnessed was 10 times more silent than this, in a sad werid irony against someone of asian decent, and back then I couldn't have told you 1 country besides India on that continent so I was at wit's ends....
