When I was a teenager I worked at my local NAPA store. The owner bought an Allante brand new in '93. He was shocked to learn that car had a 50% depreciation rate after you drive if off the lot. Despite that, I felt like a rock star when he let me drive it to fill it up with gas. His model had an all digital dash display. Looked like a Star Fighter. lol

The theft/security Iight is the start stall, that’s my opinion .. I fixed a lot of these gm theft issues in my day. So on that particular model I’m assuming, because he didn’t show it but if it’s the chip/resistor in the key, you can go to the base of the column snatch the two small white wires down cuz they are broken in the column pop the resister out of the key and solder it between the two white wires and wallah theft module or bcm is happy and releases the theft line to ecm or because of what car he is working on im sure he will be busting out his steering wheel puller and lock plate puller tool and replacing the tumbler because thats where the two white wires go to, to read the resistance

This is it. Take a look online at the cylinder lock for this model. Two small wires run down the steering column from the cylinder lock. One or both little wires are broken. It's called GM PassKey security system or something like that. This could be separate from any ECM diagnostics maybe and probably has it's own security module behind or below the glove box. At least that's where it was at on the Pontiacs. He's got the manual, maybe he should check that first. All those PassKey systems break the little wires in the column. What a bitch to install a cylinder lock.

First time I saw one of these being worked on was at the GM Training Center in Burbank California. The entire dash was removed, there were 8 large harnesses from some kind of diagnostic machine connected to the car's harnesses and the dash harnesses. No idea what was going on with this vehicle. Our group was not in a Cadillac training class. We were passing through this diagnostic(?) room. That was back in the early 90's. Good luck with this one Ivan, you may need it!

The theft will need bypassed, read resistance on the chip of the key and Supply your own resistor in place of it. The baro is actually the map sensor reading when you cycle the key on before the car starts. Also the quad driver fault needs addressed. A quad driver is something that actually drives components associated with the engine just like drivers on a modern car.KISS on these, back to basics. Supplement a fuel source, does it run? Check for good Spark and go from there. ECM failures where common on those.

Makes sense to me too. I had a Subaru XT Turbo from '86 that had a similar problem momentarily after I had done some work on it and it was a loose vacuum hose. That car had a 5th injector in the manifold for cold starts that only was active at cranking and then cut off and that's what caused the start and then stall. So in addition to theft deterrent system vacuum leaks from dried out hoses could be an issue.

Measure the original keys for the right resistance and then solder a resistor into the lock cylinder wires(small twisted pair). Theft deterrent is what's making the start stall happen. Anyone with a 90's cadillac would have experienced this and lucky AOL was around to look it up.
@KellySpongberg
@KellySpongberg 2 күн бұрын
Years of installing remote starts, this one acts like the resistance check is failing and cutting the engine off. When I hear a GM start and immediately stop, I look at the PATS (passive anti theft system). I would not solder in a resistor, as some higher trim GMs also measured time along with resistance (think waveform) so a new cylinder may be the fix.

Quad Drivers were used to control up to 4 items off each chip (driver). The PROM is a calibration unit and must match stored internal data. Checksum errors are internal chip errors. I would make sure you have the correct PROM installed in the ECM. Then, address the issue of Theft Deterrent if still shown as a problem, as others have sai about hhe key and ignition switch. Good Lluck!

In my opinion, all new cars should leave the factory with a complete set of factory service manuals for that vehicle sitting in the front seat. The price of which should be included in the MSRP. The main deterrent to this seems to be the manufacturers only want their own service centers working on their vehicles.

i don’t doubt the sensor is bad however the start stalls is a classic case of gm vats security issues and you have a security light staying on if it was my car the vats would have been bypassed a long time ago i suspect you have a problem with the vats system and the map was a problem as well i do think there’s a default strategy but im not 100 percent sure at that time it’s possible that there isn’t a default solution but i still think it’s the security system classic gm cutting the fuel so all you had was the prime so you get a start instantly stalls then just a crank no start as there is only a prime with a key cycle anyway i look forward to your next update

I've actually seen a MAP sensor failure on a 5 cylinder VW I was tinkering with. That thing sat for 10 years and when I finally got it to start, it ran like on 2 cylinders. Spark, compression, fuel all checked out. I was getting ready to fire the parts cannon at it but I unplugged the vacuum hose going to the MAP sensor, which lives inside the PCM btw, and the engine reved up to 3k rpm and ran flawlessly. I had to solder a new MAP sensor onto the PCM board and it fixed the misfire issue.

There is a fix for the cylinder head bolt thread stripping problem but it requires specialised equipment to drill out the old threads then to fit Timeserts into the engine block while the engine is still bolted into the car. I think that the sequential fuel injection is just a gimmick because just about all of the multi point fuel injected engines were semi sequential fuel injected systems or a "batch fired" fuel injection system which ECU had 2 injector driver transistors, 1 for each batch of injectors. In Australia, Holden ran the very last 3.3 litre Holden inline six using a Bosch L-Jetronic ECU which wasn't sequentially fuel injected because 1 power transistor switched all 6 fuel injectors together in the 1984-1986 model Holden VK Commodore. Then when Holden bolted the Nissan RB30E(T} engine into the next model, the 1986-1988 model VL Commodore it was semi sequentially fuel injected meaning that each batch of 3 fuel injectors were fired separately & alternately or one after the other. When I did the DOHC cylinder head conversion on the 3 litre Nissan RB30E 6 cylinder engine I used the ECU & wiring harness for the 6 cylinder Nissan RB25DE engine which was out of a 1995 model Nissan R33 Skyline, that car had full sequential fuel injection & a COP (coil on plug) ignition system instead of a distributor like the SOHC engine did. That means that each fuel injector was fired separately rather than the injectors being batch fired. That Chevy Northstar engine appears to still use the ECU which has the plug in MEMCAL as both the GM-DELCO OBD1 (ALDL) & the Bosch OBD1.5 PCMs did in the V6 & V8 Holden Commodores did in Australia up until 1999 prior to Holden replacing the locally built 5 litre Holden V8 engine with the 5.7 litre Chevrolet LS1 V8 engine which was controlled by an OBD2 Delphi PCM which could only be reflashed through the diagnostic port. The Holden Commodores which were fitted with the 3.8 litre Buick L36 V6 engine continued to run with that Bosch PCM up until 2004 prior to the release of the VZ Commodore which ran the locally built 175 kilowatt 3.6 litre "Alloytec" GM-Holden V6 LY7 engine. That equivalent engine albeit a 210 kilowatt version of the 3.6 litre V6 engine replaced the 32 valve 4.6 litre Chevrolet Northstar V8 engine, it also replaced the 4.8 litre Chevrolet V8 engine so yeah, why bother with the 4.8 litre V8 engine which was less powerful than the 3.6 litre V6 engine ? I would give that Northstar engine in the video a squirt of starting fluid to see if it even fires over despite it smelling flooded with fuel !

The MAP should solve the original issue of no throttle response, but I expect the anti-theft is why it only fires and stalls immediately. That light should not be on like that.

Couple of questions. Surely, without fixing the Anti-theft system, anything you do downstream of that is pointless? Or if you can bypass that, do you not have a signal generator you can use to substitute the map signal to trick the ecu into believing it is working correctly to prove your theory? Doesn't the OEM service manual give a voltage range for a good MAP Sensor?

What a weird location for the map sensor. I was thinking the same thing, what is it's reference to atmosphere if it's inside the intake? No wonder it's an unobtainable part, they overcomplicated a sensor in a way that not even the German brands will do!

That start/stall almost acts like the ignition switch is coming apart. The old column mount switches were bad to separate, causing symptoms just like this. I'd still start with installing the old PROM first though.

I’m sure he charges a pretty penny for his services and I don’t blame him I’m the same way. However one thing I’ve noticed with being in the industry for my entire adult life is people think cheap is better however contrary to that belief the guy prolly has more into it in the last 9 months at the other shop than Ivan will charge to fix it correctly. Parts cannons get expensive quickly.

Im a little hung up on the quad driver fault. Quad driver 2 relates to fuel injector controls. Im kinda leaning towards an injector fault or fuses for injectors. PCM wants to see 12v when output is off and 0v when output is on. Simple fuse could cause that fault message. Thats my best guess at this point.

The map sensor may be a problem, but I don't think its the problem. Any time I see this type of activity from a GM I think bypass ignition system. I would have started by looking at the crank sensors and the ICM. The one sensor trips at TDC and the other on is offset like 27 degrees. It runs off of one of them for the initial fire up and then switches to the other one a second later to be able to adjust the timing with the computer.

Blower motor won't turn off and randomly undulates, eh? Sure looks like there's a lot of super high tech early 90s electronics in that center stack! I can't imagine GM would eeeever tie a whole bunch of powers and grounds together for things like the HVAC, antitheft, PCM and Cruise Control... LOL Excited to see where this one goes! Really cool rare piece of history there, definitely worth keeping it functional! :D

You can Google : What is GM Astro ventillation ? That may explain the blower motor running - if the key is on . No expert here , but on those early GM with the PROM memory , your high end scan tool may be able to ID the existing PROM . Check with GM if there were any updates with new software . You would then put in the latest PROM . Some of the counter people weren't even born when this came out and may not know what a PROM is ! 😂😂😂😂😂

The quad driver module’s are like multipurpose blocks. Both monitors a circuit and controls a circuit. Idk why they did it this way instead of making a own dtc like “air pump relay”. Say for the air pump relay, with it being off the sense line is expecting battery, and near 0 when on. But say the fuse is blown before the ecm tries to turn on the relay, it will see no battery. A fault line will change and cause a dtc for which qdm is at fault and will change a data pid from ok to fault. There tends to be 3 qdm’s

Hi Ivan thanks for the great video ! I have a 93 also but have about 80k but no problems so far . These cars are known for having a bad resistor chip on the key I think it's 10 olms check that among other things . I also have my trusty snapon varous did you use a adaptor cable to hook your scanner from obd 2 to obd 1?? also it's better to use a non synthetic oil on the first gen Northstars less possible chance of less leaks . these engines also use oil .

Every absolute pressure sensor must have this vacuum reference void. Also the system doesn't seem able to detect the absence of the MAP. Usually in systems that detect open/short circuit condition of the signal wire, there is a bias resistor in the ECU. This make the signal wire measure at slightly bellow the reference voltage (eg 4,8 volts with Vref at 5 volts).

Always amazing Ivan .....it always amazes me with them so called shops who are literally just part pickers do this crap do people and great cars meaning have them for months and months but still don't get it right and I use the part picker reference because being a professional as long as I have I've came to know who is a real mechanic and who is nothing more then a simple mis reading code part picker with some basic ase cert who don't care about anything but getting paid because real mechanics, you and me Ivan, care about 1st and foremost getting it right and right the first time and always except whatever challenges come our way and actually want to learn because it's what drive us to do what we do then in the end the money and happy car happy customer is just the cherry on the cake and the experience gained we store on our internal memory card and can't wait till we use it again or it helps with further progression on other vehicles ...... appreciate you brother seriously and watch ever video ever time and you taught me a lot and still keeping teaching me and the rest of us
