Enjoyable video. A honest build and a pleasure to watch. Just sat back with my cup of tea and unwound a bit. This is what true modeling is about, no 3d printed parts, no rivet counting and kit complaints. Very good job !

Glad you enjoyed it Joe! I think we should just take a model for what it is and make the most of it. I will admit that sometimes I add some extras, mostly scratch building, but modeling is meant to be enjoyed. I also think that we shouldn't "break the bank" to do it, lol. Thanks so much for watching and for the wonderful comment. It's because of modelers like you that I make these video builds. Stay safe my friend and model on. Johnny

Hi Gerry, thanks for looking in. I picked this kit to build so I could get a feel for doing ships, I plan to build some capital ships in the future, so I figured what better way to "get my feet wet" in building subjects like this, lol!! Stay safe and model on my friend!! Johnny

Well that was really interesting, Johny! Test fit and alignment of parts plays a key role in the boats. Excellent job done on the assembly, i am looking forward to see the rest of the build. Take care and keep up the good work my friend.

Thank you very much George for looking in! I was questioning my choice of deviating from the instruction for the superstructure's assembly, but I think it was the better approach, at least for me. I always seem to have issues with following instructions, lol. Stay safe and model on my friend! Johnny

Woah there John, had no idea this kit existed, looks like it's way better than the old version of which I have built 6 times as a real youngster. I'm currently working on the old kit right now. I want to build it like in the film "They Were Expendable" when the boat was being worked on in that wooden cradle. Got the cradle built and the base partially built, am looking for some decent 1/72 figures that would work in a boat yard so that's gumming up the works right now. I have 8 places to build in my shop so I usually am working on 8 things at a time. Notes are everywhere on my constructions, all my students really bust my cookies about this but without these I forget what color I used or where I stop building and work on another piece. The old Wright Flyer is under construction, along with "The Invisible Man", "Superman" (the old kit), an original "Tonto" figure, a 1/48 Hellcat target tug version, the big Revell "Bon Homme Richard" and some German 1/35th figures for a small diorama. So was real good to see you building this new release of a classic boat. Keep up the good work , see ya Bill G.

Why do you need a specific video for the PT-579/PT-588 kit when they're basically identical kits?

Hi Johnny, You made some great progress on your PT Boat. It sounds like you have been doing some studying on your nautical terms. Thanks for sharing. I'll be watching for the next part. Have a great day. Jeff

This model is more realistic than A.M.T.'s version of "Jack" Kennedy's P.T. Boat. People all over KZbin say that the English manufagturer at A.M.T. left out the 2 propeller shafts, 2 propellars, 2 rudders, and used the wrong propeller for the aquatic vehicle in the first place.
@hillbillymodeling2 жыл бұрын
Hi Mr Juvefrank, I think this kit depicts the correct propeller and rudder arrangement. The PT's had 3 diesel engines, one for each prop. Also, there are 2 mufflers per engine mounted on the rear of the hull, that's 6 mufflers total, which Revells kit has. Thanks for the grate comment my friend! Johnny
@Hjerte_Verke3 ай бұрын
Of course it's more realistic, it is NEW. Your kit didn't begin life as an AMT model either, it was originally Lindberg and the one propeller/one rudder model you're seeing is the altered mold they used for the R/C version, kit number 70818 from 1992. Find an earlier kit, pre-1992 and it will have three propellers/three rudders and will be more accurate but not perfect. The original mold is from Olin I think, circa 1958! Even the exalted Tamiya was turning out toylike models in 1958 so you will have to adjust your expectations.

This model your working on has to be from new cut molds as i have the original PT-109 from the sixty's and there was never any interior to that model. I presently am working on the AMT 1/64 scale version. I am putting radio control into it. Its larger than the Revell version. That hull is one peice like the old Revell kit. Yet it is suitable for RC instalation. I am using the hardware and electronics from an inexpensive wally-world RC boat and all of the hardware does fit with modifications. Ill say more next time.
@hillbillymodeling7 ай бұрын
Hi Scott, this kit is listed on Scale Mates as a new tool for 2018. Other modelers have commented that the fit issues that I had were what they experienced with their kits from the earlier kit release. I imagine that they may have made modifications to the original mold design for this kit, but this is only speculation on my part. Good luck with your RC version of the PT Boat. Take care and model on my friend. Johnny
@Hjerte_Verke3 ай бұрын
We're in an era of multiple scale "PT-109" models so there's no real need to stick to 1/72 or 1/64 if you desire an RC conversion.

What kind of glue should I use?
@hillbillymodeling6 ай бұрын
Hi Rachel, I use Tamiya Extra Thin, it has a small applicator brush attached to the cap and is easy to use. It is designed to soften the plastic joint and allows the plastic to stick together making a strong joint. Also, it doesn't leave excess glue on the surface in case you use too much, lol, like I often do. I hope this helps, stay safe and model on my friend! Johnny
@Hjerte_Verke3 ай бұрын
I would try a variety of glues or cements, actually. For ill fitting parts or for absolute maximum strength, like the two hull halves here at 1:42, I would use a liquid glue that doesn't evaporate in seconds (unlike Tamiya Extra Thin). There might be others but I use Testors Liquid Cement with applicator, applied to both sides, wait 30 seconds and then join the sides together. The melted plastic that oozes out can be sanded when it cures and is its own gap filler. I also use Tamiya Extra Thin, Plastruct Bondene, various CA (Cyano Acrylate) "super glue" thick and thin formulations, etc.
