This is a great video series on this system. Well done, Ivan. There is a service bulletin for those front spool valves for oil leakage onto the alternator. The bulletin specifies to replace the spool valve and both gaskets. You still have to buy the entire unit with the base but the bulletin actually says to remove the top half from the new spool valve and toss out the base. So, you just replace the valve, the separator plate and the two gaskets. Also, I've been told that if they're not installed and torqued properly it can twist the valve and the plunger inside can hang up. Don't use aftermarket on these. It doesn't usually end well.
@KStewart-th4sk4 ай бұрын
You are also told that when installing any hydraulic directional control valve---not torquing it properly can lead to the spool sticking. Seems to me they also mention sequence, almost like the procedure used when torquing a cylinder head. Do it evenly, don't be tightening one bolt to spec. all at once.

If you're replacing the spool valve assembly, check the rockers meticulously. I had a case where a friend of mine was doing a broken timing belt job. And of course, it bent a couple of valves. But after the head rebuild, some of the rockers weren't moving smoothly and it would cause misfires. I'm not sure if a rocker shaft got bent or if it just has some dirt trapped in there. But after taking the rocker assembly apart and cleaning everything, the engine ran normally again. Just something to look out for. I can't wait to see part 3.

So 1st thing I found was total trim was -40%. Cleaned m.a.f. Dropped to -14%. So that was one problem. Checked all sensors, fuel pressure etc. Found nothing wrong with any inputs. But did find valve adjustment off and Autolite spark plugs. Which is a big no for Japanese engines. Adjusted valves, replaced spark plugs with NGK's and installed a new M.A.F. Smooth as butter. These things are difficult to diagnose with so many reasons that the engine could misfire.

Hi Ivan, my brother have a 2008, and been having the same anoying 3497, then he bought a chinese spool from ebay, the spool works fine but had a problem with the gasket that stays into the engine, the part that filters the oil probably has a different spec than the original, even that is not the right thing to do, he just enlarged the holes, making a better oil flow, he also sprayed some cabon cleaner in the passage ways, those seemed to be slightly cloaged Honda dont provide the gasket, you have to buy the hole assy to get it. After that no more 3497, and another detail the 3497 error only occoured when the engine went into 4 cyl mode, when cruising about 100 km/h (60mph) with very slight accelarator depressed. Hope this find any usefull. Cheers from Brazil. I found your work just fantastic, keep it up.

Those plastic injector caps can be a nightmare. Working on some of my classic Honda's from the late 90's, I've had every one of those plastic caps get stuck and break off into the hole when trying to remove the injectors. I've had to pull the entire intake off on some of the F series before just to clean all the broken plastic out of the hole's so I could replace some injectors. Also I love the OTC fuel injector pulse tester, but I have learned to be very careful with that tool. The first one I bought a couple years back, the first time I used it on my Honda, I did the first 2 injectors no problem, then I forgot to unhook it from the battery and went to hook it up to the 3rd injector, and the 2 wires very briefly arced together, and that was it, it never worked again. So I had to drop another 130 dollars for a second one, but I am very careful with that thing now.

When you replace port injectors in sets, especially if they have been tested and flowed, all should have the same O-Ring type, material and color. If the front and back flow control actuators for cylinder deactivation are the same you could do swaptronics between the two banks and retest. See if the problem follows the bank two actuator. The flow control solenoid will have a specific current control approach. Even a low side switch PWM ramp with possible frequency change. Even if the solenoid is powered by +12VDC directly it could still have current control. If we think there is a complex solenoid current drive approach, it is possible that the solenoid output from the PCM is bad. Should perhaps compare the current waveforms between the two bank and see if the current drive looks the same.

If the part is good but the oil pressure is low when the issue is present and normal when the issue is not then, if its an easy one to drop, dropping the oil pan is the only next move. You'll probably find one or more of those foil caps from the new oil bottles or a bunch of oil change sticker inside the pan or stuck in the screen on the pickup tube. Famous washer between calliper bracket and hub. When you lose one get rid of them both lol.

If nothing else, Ivan has proven it doesn't need a new engine! And yes, the valve lash was way too tight.

In Ivans concluding comments about it working unless it was really hot; I was imagining a hot jacket on the solenoid to see how it behaved at higher temperatures. Would have been easy to do.

I've got a 2006 Honda Accord EX 3.0 V6 with 190K miles. It has been and still is an awesome engine and run smooth as silk. I've always thought that the gas mileage was pretty decent for this car. I don't know why they had to ruin it by adding all of this crap on here. You should at least have the option to disable it, if you want.

Fuel injector caps, for the most part, are there only to keep the o-ring from sticking in the head.

30 years in the business I have to say one think, a loose valve is a happy valve.

5:21 some of those v6's come in with a bad oil soaked alternator from oil leaking from that spool valve, its 2 gaskets that need to be replaced because they usually go flat, honda has put something out about just replacing the 2 gaskets and the upper half replaceable parts, gasket on the engine side(not parts side) seemed kinda flat to me but maybe its just the video

Hey Ivan that washer you found is the washer that goes on the caliper bracket bolts. It’s a spacer. The 17 mm bolts. Just so you know dear sir! Clearly whoever worked on this car was going wayyy too fast.

@@ctbale1what does the ECO light mean then?

@@n9wox too long to explain. I thought it had something to do with vcm also but it doesn't. In modulates air conditioning use, the way the transmission shifts and other things but nothing to do with vcm

Did you measure the current at the suspected solenoid and the Ohm of the solenoid itself?
@kdmq4 ай бұрын
The fact that the "default" when unplugging the solenoid is a limp mode response instead of normal 6-cylinder operation is gravely concerning in my opinion, as it could lead to unsafe scenarios on interstate highways when the engine is still physically capable of running on all 6 and the transmission is still healthy. I'd like to see Honda try to defend themselves in court when someone got squashed by a semi truck over a system that gives you an extra 1MPG.

VCM tuner 2. Simple, not much fuel mileage difference, avoids oil consumption issues and plugged cat.

Ivan you’re killing me. I know it’s probably hard for us to hear the engine running but I think what I am hearing is a very lose valve train. What is that engines oil pressure. Is it in spec. Is the correct pressure getting to the head or heads. Seeing that old blue goop silicone you found might just be in on of the oil passages or anywhere it shouldn’t. Your right way to many hands in that motor. By the sound of it did the local mechanic put the cam followers back in the same position he found them and is causing excessive ware.
