I LOVE this series. I started with, and end up doing mostly maintanance, repairs and restoration. I am glad to see all the nuances involved with other's techneques, and where restoration stops to preserve a story of an era long gone. We are pretty lucky to live in a time where info, parts and whatnot are easily available, and don't have to re-invent the wheel...or are hard pressed to come up with something no one else hasn't dealt with....Thank you so much for sharing the process. I do like the binding strips for fretboard inlays. Notes taken...Ideas forming....

Very tasteful and discrete restoration of one of the only guitars I still have on my bucket list. As I wait(these things ain't cheap anymore), iIn the meantime I put a couple of Hoftner 513 pickups on a Strat body and wired it to original specs for the 2 pickup version. Wired it like one of the later ones with a varitone. Sounds awesome. Anyone interested, all the pickups use different tone cap values, which is one of the reasons why these are so dynamic sounding and versatile.
@whssy Жыл бұрын
No longer on the bucket list. I just got a white /blackvinyl-covered 175 which is almost the same as this - just without individual switches for pickups - it has a single selector on the horn for bridge, middle or neck, or all 3. And tone sliders are on top. Bridge is non-adjustable. Awesome guitar.

I do repairs and setups part time and I love doing neck work! So I get work doing necks and fret work from other repair people as most hate the job. But I can sit down for 80% of the work ( I have spinal problems) and I find it therapeutic....

Ohhh me thinks Ben has some competition in Sophia. You can tell she has been properly trained and is well practiced with hand tools. Every move is precise and intentional. The mark of true craftsman. I can see an in shop build off in the future for sure with Ben vs the new kids. The guitar is for sure unique. Even kind of gimmicky for its age. It is in great condition and the extra love the team has given it I am sure even better then when it was born.

Thank you! Would love to hear what the tone wheels did for each corresponding pickup in the playing demo, maybe a follow-up. Maybe do a video with era similar guitars, one song 30 to 40 second shorts. Nothing crazy, just a jam that highlights there eras tonal qualities. Just a thought. I’m an amateur at tinkering and slowly acquiring an arsenal of tools and knowledge from these video’s, thanks and keep them coming! Stu,Memphis TN

I've got one of these. It's a 1967 in Sunburst, with original Selmer strap. I've owned it since about 1977 and I will never part with it. When I play it I'm right back to my teen years in the sixties. 😁🎸

I would love to see a video about angle and shape of the nut slots and troubleshooting. How do you maintain the correct shallow angle on a G string with no string tree? What is the issue when you get that weird resonant metallic ringing behind the nut? Etc. Thanks!

hmmm. The end of part one has Ben 'restoring' the cracked veneer on the back of the body - which is conspicuous by its absence at @7:05 where Sofia is re-attaching the neck to the body. Was there a change of plan?

Ben and Sofia, I've found when working on old nuts and saddles dust from an unbleached bone blank seems to blend in better. I just sacrifice a blank and catch the dust from a fine file and save it in an old pill bottle. Hope this is of some help.

I would've taken all the frets out, re-glued some of the inlays and re-radiused the fretboard. Then I'd install a new unbleached bone nut and new vintage correct frets. I'm all for keeping an instrument original, but that whole front of the neck was a gonner in my eyes

Surely, to do the pencil marking correctly, the pencil must lie on at least 2 frets... in this video the pencil was rocking on just the first fret, so how can you get an accurate measurement, as it would depend on the angle of the pencil!

I have a 60s Galaxie, its a total pig to play. The neck is too thick and it's just too easy to knock the pickup switches off or the mute on. Looks cool as tho.
@PastelComGini2 жыл бұрын
I guess that after a nut adjustment and fret leveling you could put your action down to the point of not caring too much about the neck. But the switches, this is really a problem. Accidentally changing the pickups is annoying, but does not cut the sound. This one cuts it.

Don't like the nut file rocking. I was always taught to point the file down towards the machines and keep it like that. Then the highest point of the nut is on the neck side edge of the nut.

Please don't ever make bone dust like that again. It's fine to use sandpaper when shaping a new nut but if you are making dust for the purpose of filling in slots then using sandpaper is a definite no no. That dust, although it looks clean, is actually contaminated with bits of sand that comes off the paper. Use a file to make dust for slot filling.

Should have just replaced the nut with an off white one or at the very least cleaned up the one you filled.
