Sounds like a cross between a Sarod and Sitar. No frets and use of glides like a Sarod
@GUNIDAS13 жыл бұрын
This instrumenet, a cross between Surbahar and Sarod was invented in the 19th century, but was very rarely played and became almost extinct. Its deep bass sound has Subahar's droning effect, which sarod lacks but the sarod-like meend and gamak can be experertly played on its fretless polished fingerboard. It is heartening to see this glorious musical instrument revived. Ghosh's rendering of Yaman is superb.

I can see glimpse of maa annapurna devi . I think he is from senia gharana or most probably maihar gharana itself. But only vistarit alaap is shown here. But maa handled the vadis gloriously that's the difference between a well cut and less cut diamond.

GRAND!!! next only to the RUDRAVEENA! i feel that a rag like YAMAN should be played either on Sursringar or on Rudraveena to bring out its other-worldly grandeur

This sounds lovely. Just out of curiosity, Anirbanji, are there other players of the surshringar today? Also are their makers of this instrument even today?
@AnirbanBanerjeeTheSarodGharana3 жыл бұрын
Yes there are a few players. And all good sarod makers can make surshringar.

O Gosvami in his book Story of Indian Music, recalls a commonly told account that the sursringar was invented by Ustad Jaffar Khan (1775-1825), a seniya in the Lucknow court (1957: 302-3)
