I first heard this raga being played in a bookshop in Kathmandu in 1986. The climber Chris Bonington was in the shop at the time and I overheard him talking about Sir Edmund Hillary. I was so captivated by the music that I asked to buy the HMV cassette tape - recorded by The Gramophone Company of India Ltd - which I have with me still. The tape has survived all sorts trials including being immersed in salt water after falling into the bilges of a sailing boat.

Yes indeed, "worth living". There is yet another beautiful rendering by him of Hem Bihag (and almost 80 minutes of it, with a spell-binding alap of about 30 minutes, this is real music) in front of his home audience in Kolkata, and here it is: kzbin.info/www/bejne/moOac4CVgrZ2hJY

This is truly lovely, and to think he was only just 28 at the time ("February 1960"), with all the rest of his all too short life ahead of him to bring joy to all who heard him play. I had the great good fortune to see/hear him three times: London in October 1983 and November 1984, then here in Dublin (Ireland) in June 1985. He was due to revisit Dublin in October 1986, but...

Pt Nikhil Banerjee was one among very few musicians of Indian Classical Music who considered it as a worship to supreme Being, while performing before his audience ,in any part of the globe ,through his dedicated sitar playing with extreme perfection about maintaining the purity of the Raga he played without any intention of getting cheap appreciation from the listeners like many of his contemporary artistes of international repute . Thus his style of sitar playing will ever remain immortal in the hearts of his ardent listeners and followers irrespective of any other factor, like, colour of skin, place of residence ,religion etc making them to feel the divinity of unity through divine music which is the sole purpose of music.

To me... His Sitar is far more mellifluous, serene, meditative, pure and divine than any other....even more than Pt. Ravi Shankar Ji...
