People are commenting how boring the crowd and how sterile the setting... Go to 7:30 and watch the slow pan... I see a group of strangers brought together in respectful silence observing, and almost obeying, only sound. There are men, women, young and old. Some have eyes closed, others open. Some thinking others escaping thought. In a world full of big, brash and ever increasing levels of greed and ostentation these people have taken an hour out of their lives to sit and observe sound...perfect, crystalline and pure with nothing else. I thought it looked tribal in a sense, like a gathering around a shaman who will unlock the portal to the other side? But most of all it just looked beautiful. Like people hearing Loscil in its purest, untapped form.

Same here, live music doesn't always need to be a obnoxious party of deafening noise and screaming. This music does do just that or at least it's a good tool as well as enjoyable. And anyone who feels things like that probably has too much going on in their heads anyways making this music so much more helpful. I would pay even more to go to a show like this then any other ordinary rock concert or whatever. Call me a boring person all you want but listening to music like this more often at home breeds a much healthier environment than constantly cranking the volume high and turning on your poison of choice. Don't get me wrong I do all the time but there's a time and place for louder, head pounding music and it shouldn't be abused unless you really wanna feel terrible over something meant to make your life more colorful anyways like music. I almost always have ambient on in the background at home and everyone always enjoys it and asks what I'm listening to. Taken out of context it seems no one cares that it's "boring" at least. Would help if people also had a good sound system too because listening to music like this with the equivalent of musical tin cans won't exactly do it much good either.
@cardboardmusic8 жыл бұрын
Totally agree. The way we listen to live music is now changing, but some don't realise this. We may be happy (I am at least) to sit silently in front of our hi-fis and enjoy music with our eyes closed, reading a book, or just thinking about the day, but when it comes to sitting in front of a computer musician we haven't quite got 'comfortable' as yet. Clubs should provide a better listening space for this type of music - cushions, books, space to lie down, sofas etc.

As someone who makes similar music, I can't help but feel bad for anyone who has to perform this stuff live. People say "ahh it's so boring to watch" but the reality is that other than coming up with some sort of visual show, that's just how it is with this sound. I imagine most ambient artists aren't exactly thrilled to be playing live for a number of reasons unless the environment is just right. That said, I hate how judgmental people get about a guy behind a laptop.

Jestin Jund well it IS boring to watch. cuz it IS a guy behind a laptop. I go to ambient gigs every chance I get cuz I love the genre, but that doesn't mean that most are visually interesting cuz they're not.
@BeholdJesse9 жыл бұрын
Jestin Jund While I see where you're coming from, the fact of the matter is that things like PureData and the sort allow for the generation of visuals quite easily. I love Loscil, but I do enjoy a bit more theatricality in the performance of ambient.

17:10 he begins my favorite song, Prairie Trains Some train on double tracks like a huge platform cruising through endless prairies. It has a power source which is a spinning gyroscope. Has anyone realized yet, ambient music isn't a song, it's a place.

The point of live performance is not necessarily visual, particularly in the case of music. I saw Phillip Glass live recently - a total visual dud. But experiencing the music, played by the composer himself, was transcendental. It was so much more powerful than any recording I'd ever heard. I'd love to "see" Loscil live for the same reason - to experience that connection with the artist, only possible live. Another reason to attend visually boring live performances is to experience the event with similarly engaged others in the audience - the social experience should not be underestimated. Finally, attendance at a live performance gives you a kind of access to the artist - to thank them or to have some input on their work - which is otherwise quite unavailable.

Ah, fond memories of going to (F)luister. It is a play on words, "Fluister" is Dutch for whisper, and "Luister" means listening. So yeah, you're supposed to be quiet. Btw, I get very annoyed when people WOOP WOOP during songs at concerts like Dead can dance. If you find the audience boring, what would you rather have seen? People talking through the performance, walking in and out, cheering him on? It's more like a meditative experience, I guess both for the artist as the audience. I also recommend Irezumi (Bialystok, Endurance etc), Biosphere, 36 (sun riders), Namlook, Visions.

All things are full of weariness, who can utter it ? the eyes are not satisfied with seeing nor the ears with hearing, I said in my heart "I will be wise" but it was so far from me ! I suppose we all get out of his incredible music what we come in with. If I were still single I would ask to marry the woman in the audience who kept her eyes closed the longest or the woman who in her innermost parts was desperately trying to say the unsayable as one right word after another never came. "We think by feeling. What is there to know? I wake to sleep and take my waking slow." "What is madness but nobility of soul at odds with circumstance" Theodore Roethke
