The PTR91 has established itself as one of the best and most reliable copies of the HK91/ HK G3 rifles. The roller-lock design traces back to the famous MG42, and then the Spanish CETME in the 1950's.
The HK G3 was most famously the base rifle for the Swedish Ak 4D Sniper/DMR rifle. It was also the base rifle for the GSG9's PSG-1, which boasted a factory acceptance of 1MOA at 300m.
P.S. it's also the "Auto-Sniper" from Counterstrike.
The system is legendary for it's reliability, but how does it do as a designated marksman's rifle? The PTR91FR here has a free-floated heavy target barrel.

I used the G3 in my time for 7 years before the G36 came in. I loved it and still love it. The longest shot I made (with optics of course) was 1200m on an MG range. One out of two. IF your G3 is kept well maintained and treated lovingly it will not let you down, ever.

My service rifle is an AK-4. The Swedish G3 clone made by HK. My particular rifle was made in 1975 and it can still shoot 3 rounds in the alpha zone of a target from 500 meters away. Good rifles they are.

@@azalkathegunpowderdragon9439 from a learning standpoint, knowing where you're missing is extremely useful. if the target was not the size of a jeep, half the time recruits learning would be like "oh, cool, might as well have fired backwards" if you don't make expert, you suck. that said, it's very useful. henry made a big deal about it but it's not nearly as bad as taking a piece of paper that puts targets "to scale" of 300m at like 25 meters or whatever and pretending.

@@superfamilyallosauridae6505 When I went through FT Benning (Army) in 2012, the qual range also had the ability to let us verify our 25/300m zero. Each shooting station had a little plug in connection for a TV monitor. At the start of the range day, we carried out the monitor to all the firing positions. They had us in shooter spotter pairs. Range control popped up the 300 meter target and had us shoot a 5 shot group at it. The monitor had a diagram to tell us where we were hitting in relation to the target, which was a standard, man sized silhouette. Gave you instant feedback whether or not you were making hits, if your sights were zeroed correctly, and whether or not the soldier needed to work on their marksmanship more. After both shooters have expended all ammunition, we'd lock and show clear, then return to the control tower, where a Drill Sergeant would be waiting with a print out of our groupings. If your groups sucked, you hung out and did dime drills for an hour until the remedial shoot. If the groups were good but poi was slightly off, the DS adjusted our front sight post, and had us return to the firing line to reverify. (We had M16A4s with irons at the time). Then they held the qual fire after lunch. And a night fire after that. And then a spendex to get rid of extra ammo. Which is when I found out how retarded the burst mechanism on an M16 was. It was probably the only time in my Army career where we had a range session this in depth. The only other time was when tagging along with some PJs in Afghanistan many many years later, for a range trip, where we had steel targets and shot timers to practice with. It was a lot of fun.

The only fancy stuff we used in USMC boot (2021, yeah I'm new asf) was some thing that measured movement which you would affix to the quad rail on your rifle, and was hooked up to a tablet. We spent a day out of grass week laying in the grass in a circle, changing firing positions when told, dry firing with this doohicky with the tablet showing how much we let the rifle move from beginning to end of trigger pull. It'd hear the click, measure your movement, and if you messed something up it'd try to diagnose it, like jerking the trigger. Weaponized autism! Gotta love it.

Thank you sooo much for reviewing the same PTR91 rifle I own, I call my girl (Dirty Diana) she is based from the PSG1 sniper system model with a 1/9 twist much better gas operations and trigger pull, it is ideal for DDM. I use a 33x44 famous marker optic for DDM Steel Shooting Comps here in NE Louisiana. she's a very deadly girl at a 1,100m. they are pricy for sure! but the German's really know how to make a very accurate rifle for sure. Good shooting !

Not sure why people would doubt its ability to be a marksman's rifle. From a purely engineering standpoint the system has a lot of inherent accuracy potential. The roller-delay system provides the requisite dwell-time to allow the bullet to leave the barrel before the bolt unlocks and mass starts moving. The bolt itself is light and does not cause a lot of displacing mass that will undercut accuracy. The barrel is kind of sort of technically free-floated. The main stumbling block to real precision accuracy is the fact that the guns were not designed and manufactured to particularly demanding specs. The German Army has a long history of making its infantry rifles very, very, very average. For example, from actual factory records the averge K98K for the Wehrmacht was nearly a 5 MOA gun, and they only had to shoot like 6 MOA to pass the standards to be accepted for the Army. Middling barrels, middling tolerances and middling performance. And because it is German, trying to do any after-market upgrades to accuratize the system is massively difficult and expensive and time consuming. Not unlike trying to do the same with an M-14/M1A.

The stock drop is the only complaint I have with these rifles when you run optics on them...but, Spuhr has an amazing stock that lines up well with it...Bill Springfield works wonders on HK triggers-I even had him do my Sig 556 (maybe y’all could shoot that one next!)

Speaking of the stock, you can also get a collapsible wire one which is more level to the bore. Although its a wire frame stock aside from the butt, you could put on a makeshift cheek rest to fix that. Aside from that however, I'm not surprised if there's an adapter for AR15 buffer tube stocks which would help even more.

In the German army we had to disassemble the G3 laying on the belly, placing the parts on the back. (including the roller lock assembly) Then reassemble it. And that hat to be quick. No tools needed of course.

Hello from Greece!! Regular infantry still uses G3 to this day... We produce the here and on past we exported many on US market by EAS the government company that produces them... I had Bill Springfield work on the trigger in my PTR and it is a night and day difference. The trigger I sent off was 11 pounds of garbage and the the trigger I got back was a short, crisp, 4 pounds.

I set him a cetme parts kit. And he built a rifle from that along with a 18 inch PTR heavy stainless barrel and receiver. Magpul prs stock and a mlok aluminum handguard. Added a H&K rear sight and mag release. LMT muzzle brake. Then a trigger job along with his buffer system and he welded on a picatinny scope rail. Installed a Athlon BTR 2-12X42 rifle scope. It is really short. And I have a ton of clearance for the charging handle. Used tall vortex pro series scope rings that have a cut out so I can use the iron sights. Of course I added a set of Black Slate industries rail covers. Gun is amazing.

Here In Portugal our military stil uses g-3. And they love the 7,62 NATO.. a powerful round. In Africa the terrorists fear the g-3. They usually run when they are in a fire fight

@@dexm2010 , granted, they are heavy by modern standards. I carried one in basic training, the first time I had ever held a proper rifle. Since you start from day one carrying it, running around with it, exercising with it, the height isn't an issue because one doesn't know anything else to compare it to. Honestly, the only hindrance I found is it's size, in close quarters. Other than that, it's a proven, reliable rifle. A workhorse!

I've owned a CETME Mod C, and now a PTR-91 GIR... Yes, they do mess up the brass (you can reload it, probably one more time... beyond that, I wouldn't risk it...), provided that you can recover it... the rifle will eject the brass out 10m or more! Crazy!!!

Mine came with an MLOK handguard, added a magpul bipod and a 2.5-10x50 scope. It's a reliable and effective $2000 DMR build that can ring steel and turn heads. Always loved the style but was never willing to shell out for a PSG1 lol

I used the G3-A4 model during my time at the german 1st mountain division. The rifle is quite heavy, doesn‘t have a bho, shooting more than a three round burst in full auto is not easy, but the ammo is extremely powerful, the rifle is absolutely reliable and a hell in accuracy.

I love watching every video! little idea: I don't know what the others think but would really appreciate if you could add a meter display next (or under) the yard display (when you shoot the targets) it doesnt have to be big. It would be much easier for non americans to know the actual distance. Sure we can look it up but me for example, i have to look every time because i forget it so fast :/ anyway, thanks for the great content you are doing a awesome job

Oh I loved my service G3-ZF... never had problems up to 650m after 800 it was more a problem of the service optics and that I was the 50th User in service... :) but that’s 22years ago. Maybe my remembrance is slightly clouded.

@@bones1x285 Doing a hold over and only missing once or twice at 800 is much more impressive than any 100 yard group size. It's called 9 hole group because they shoot a 9 shot group rather than a 3 or 5 shot group. A 9 shot group reflects the accuracy of a rifle more so than a 5.

Guys, thank you for everyone's input, it does mean a lot. Interesting enough, Josh and I have had this conversation, and while we were going to integrate a 9-shot group somewhere initially, it ended up adding more work to the post-production planning process. While it may not seem like a lot more time to do so with one rifle, adding 1-2hours of work to every single video directly means that we detract from our publication frequency, and time that we could be spending on making the classic reviews. I know it's been a while since we've done a classic, but trust me they are in the works. Between the SBI, regular filming and personal stuff, we're running on fumes. I hope our summer will give us a chance to catch up on more content production. -Henry

In my time as conscript, I had and G3 rifle with a 4x24 scope. Safe shots where anything within 600m. You could do 800m hits. But not the he is holding the rifle ;-)....Also the guns we had where not realy "accuratized" it was more that the best of 100(??) or so rifle was taken and a scope tsuck to it. I realy liked shooting with it.

Old post but I have the same rifle with a LPVO 10 power. What made it easier to shoot was the addition of the magpul hk Stock.

There is no Standard Bundeswehr G3: We ( in the German Air Force - ) had H&K G3 FS ( free floating barrel ), G3`s made by Kongsberg and H&K G3 FS with matching mount and numbers Hensoldt 4 x used by the EOD - guy. On the EOD - rifles the triggerpull is 3 kg instead the standard 4 kg`s. And there is also a precocking system in the german border police - rifles what uses the same trigger assembly like a G3, what reduces the force to a few 100 g ( Stecher )

The flute marks don't hurt anything. If you use a case buffer, it doesn't dent the brass and it doesn't send them into the next zip code. I've reloaded plenty of it with no issues.

Reading comments i feel much of the viewing community confuses accuracy vs precision. Accuracy is what is expected for a DMR or Battle Rifle. This fits the bill perfectly. I ran into Nato partners in AFG that had G3 wity optics that loved them for DMR platforms.

Cool video! I have a HK-91 and wonder how well it would do at those ranges? The Max I have used it at is 100yds. It is very accurate.
