Just wanted to follow up with a report on the 149gr Federal 7.62x51 ammo. My PTR-91 really likes the stuff. It's the best groupings I've had with the rifle. I'm averaging about 1.75" groups at 100 yards. I find that to be entirely acceptable for bulk target practice ammo. Today out in the field I was able to consistently hit a 3" spinner on my buddy's target stand at 100 yards. Out of a 20 round magazine I missed twice and I can say with confidence that both misses were my fault, not the ammo. Anyway, super happy with this ammo in this rifle. Thank you for the recommendation!

@@DecotFamilyShooters I have the PTR-91 A3S. It is equipped with a wide handguard, Magpul PRS stock, polished trigger pack from HKParts.net, VG6 gamma muzzle break and a Leupold VX-R Patrol 3-9x scope in a Larue quick detach mount.

My findings as well. My PTR FR likes the 147 gr NATO stuff and 150 gr. Nutn Fancy crapped on this gun and loves the M1A. I find my M1A shoots similarly and I think the difference is me. Mine is the Scout Squad model with the 18” barrel so it is a fair test. I will say the stock trigger is much better than the stock PTR’s, so if I do the trigger job perhaps it will be better. Don’t know. Nice vid.

I'm getting the same results with my PTR-91 GI model, with a 1-4x24 SWFA SS scope mounted to the rifle using a B+T universal mount and a pair of LaRue QD rings. Average group size is about 1.75" at 100 yards using M80 ball rounds and American Eagle 150gr 308D. I've tried the heavier (and more expensive) Hornady & Federal Match Grade ammo but I dont see any better results so I I'm dedicated to the #AE308D. More than 1000 rounds fired and not one single malfunction !

I’m a huge fan of the PTR brand, videos like this are too few and far between, not nearly enough people know about the guns and what they can do. So thank you for the excellent testing and content. Cheers

I'm on my second PTR-91, over the course of 14 years, and both have been 1.5" MOA guns. But, of all the people that I have talked with at the gun range, none of them had ever heard of PTR, G3, or HK-91. You can literally see their brains processing an error code when uttering those phrases.

I just bought one from a buddy who works at the local gun shop and he threw in 500 rounds of 308 and 7.62x51 match ammo. It has the Magpul PRS sniper stock and a really nice muzzle brake and he gave me a bunch of 20 round mags. Going to have some serious fun with this baby!

Your question at the 14:39 mark you ask the question "Does this gun prefer lighter bullets?". I would think "Yes" it does as it was specifically designed for the 147gn to 155gn Ball ammunition. Some platforms are more forgiving concerning projectile stabilization, possibly due to barrel length. At less than 18" in length the HK91 barrel may not be long enough to stabilize heavier bullets for a given load/fps. If I remember correctly I believe the HK91 owners guide recommended using the 7.62x51 NATO Ball style of ammunition for best performance.

First off good video and content. I just wanted to tell you that I’ve always had great results with the federal white box 149gr ammo. Both my PTR’s and M1A would shoot it consistently less than 2 inches with iron sights at 100. Another thing to mention is that when shooting groups with multiple different types of ammo, if you shoot 1 sighter round with each new type of ammo and then proceed with a 5 shot group, you should have much more consistent results.

Just received my PTR / Cetme back. Did a lot of research. Went with a Athlon Helos BTR Gen II 2-12X42 rifle scope with Vortex Pro series extra high scope rings. Scope is under twelve inches. And it is shorter on the end closest to the charging handle. Have plenty of clearance for the charging handle. Also the rings have a large opening so I can use my iron sights. I will let you know how it does at the range. Ended up having to go with the Aim Sports M-lok hand guard because stock wood handguard didn’t have a large enough opening for the heavy barrel. I also went with Magpul PRS stock. It looks and feels amazing.

For some reason my PTR's shoot 150's and below much better than match ammo. Your video is spot on when it comes to group size. I use malaysian out to 600yds in the 2MOA area. Good enough. Always dependable, kicks pretty good.

The twist rate on the PTR rifles is intended for stabilizing 147gr rounds, they just don't stabilize heavier match ammo as well as other guns with more appropriate twist rates for those rounds(like the M1a for instance). If you want the most accuracy then its definitely best to stay in that 145-150gr range.

Yeah, This video was predictable when I shaw the intro to each bullet weight. I have been shooting precision for years and weight (or length) of projectile must match the twist and velocity to produce accuracy. I was just waiting to see how the Nato 147 was going to do, and it was as expected.

Also mag release, picatinny scope rail, muzzle brake and straight trigger installed. He is assembling the whole rifle. Can’t wait to get it back. I reload. So military brass and Sierra Match kings. I don’t care if the rifle ruins the brass because it’s so plentiful at the range.

Just came back from the range today and my PTR91 shot terrible with the Federal, Winchester, S&B and it shot okay with Wolf, all 7.62x51. My best groups where shot with the PMC .308 149 grain ammo. I got a 2-3 moa with IRON SIGHTS so I’ll have to throw some glass on it one day and report what I get. I already easily hit a human sized target at 200 yards today, I’m excited to say the least to when I can finally get some optics on it. 😂 And yes it was the same federal ammo you used in the video which I thought was interesting.

My PTR's all like the lighter ammo. My match loads no matter how I loaded them didn't seem to be very impressive. 147 to 150 seemed to work the best. In fact Wolf ammo always shot great. I figured since it had a 1 in 10 twist it would like the heavier match bullets but it didn't. I just shoot Malaysian ammo because it is cheap and it can hit targets out to 600yds pretty good. Great video and you are spot on with your conclusion.

The Swedes plan and use their 91's as DMR's, and their doctrine is to use M80 ball or equivalent--I was betting on the lighter loads at the beginning of the video, and guessed right. Great video, BTW. Makes me want to do something more with mine.

With the HK91 rifles I generally shy away from the steel cased ammunition due to the roller delayed locking design that utilizes the fluting chambers. The steel cases just don't react the same as brass and much of the HK91 design relies on the properties of the brass cases for correct operation.

As far as accuracy goes I have heard different, and experienced different. They are just as accurate as both of my M1A s. I own two PTR 91s The 16 inch barrel and the 18 inch barrel. Both rifles Shoot good groups at 100 yards. I scoped the 16 inch barrel, with a Leupold 3 HD 1.5-4X20 FIREDOT TMR shooting 2-3 inch groups at 100 yards. I find the PTR 91 to be very accurate for a .308 Battle Rifle! Just saying Depends on your experience with longer ranges, practice (burning powder) makes better... PTR 91 are great robust rifles!!! That is why I own two of them. Not a rifle for the sissies! Its a mans rifle!!

@tinkerjeeppublications9823
@tinkerjeeppublications9823 4 жыл бұрын
Actually the CETME was more like the prototype of the G3. The Actual G3 was developed by ex MauserWerks designers. HK evolved the G3 components to make a slightly better rifle and the G3A3 was the final version of the rifle first developed and manufactured in Spain via CETME by the MauserWerks designers. So neither is a clone, really. Just a migrating gun design that migrated from Germany to Spain and then back to Germany.

Keep in mind a few things . First round on semi-autos tends to throw a flier . They are chambered differently than the rounds fired after . This is also a Battle Rifle - not a target rifle . 3 inches has traditionally been acceptable . 1 inch is the beginning of sniper grade accuracy . Good shooting . Keep at it - dry fire is your friend and a bunch less expensive . I get good accuracy with the Federal XM80 also . I run mine with an Aimpoint and the meat hammer stock . Runs like a champ.
