Love you guys. I was abused by my mother as a child. I have fibromyalgia, Hashimotos, Sjogren’s Syndrome, arthritis. I am a registered nurse and you two know more than anyone I know. Wish your videos were a requirement for all medical schools. We need to re-name fibromyalgia to something else.

OMG!!! You gentlemen have discussed so many things that I suffer from. I was sexually and physically abused over several years as a child, plus being bullied and tormented throughout my childhood and on into adulthood. I was also raped as an adult. So YES! I have PTSD, also anxiety attacks, self-harming behavior, headaches, etc. THANK YOU for letting me know I'm not crazy.

I had an emotionally neglectful childhood, an abusive husband financially, spiritually, and emotionally. I had numerous operations and no real support system. I keep praying to God for the answers because doctors seem to be pill happy and don't really understand. God bless you both.

This really helps clarify my situation. I had those unfortunate childhood experiences, but my fibromyalgia didn't kick in until the last days of my osteoarthritis. It was affecting my life in my mid 20's, but my doctors didn't take it seriously. They approached it as a combination of poor posture, attention seeking, and self pity. So I struggled with pain and stigma for ten years. Even today, it's tempting (even to me) to tell the story of "You got the surgery, quit whining" instead of as "your nervous system underwent a decade of habituation to high alert status."

I have PTSD and Fibromyalgia. My former doctor did not believe that Fibromyalgia exists. My neurologist and new GP diagnosed it. The meds Lyrica and Cymbalta caused allergic reactions, and I do not ask for pain killers. Changing my diet to gluten-free has decreased my daily pain significantly. Tylenol and Flexeril are my only diversions from pain. I would not wish this condition upon anyone.
@janicetelfer62117 ай бұрын
After a bad car accident for pain I tried lyrica, cymbalta and I took amatriptaline and nortriptyline and it caused congestive heart failure From being allergic to it. It's been a night mare for me too. I do find diet helps. I eat good now for my heart and for fibro. I don't wish this on anyone. Like you I don't take any meds anymore. I am allergic to steroid injections I found out too the hard way. So no more meds for this gal!! Lol hugs to you fellow warrior 😊

What an excellent presentation! One of your most important. PTSD and fibromyalgia are both poorly understood related disorders and you tied it together expertly in this talk. Thank you!

Thank you Doctors for helping me to understand the correlation between my PTSD and fairly recently developed Fibromyalgia. More videos please on what we can do to deal with this since, for location reasons, we all cannot visit your practice.

Glad I found you. I survived a civil war as a child, separation from my father who was my only protector, and prolonged physical and emotional abuse from my mother and her family. I developed fibromyalgia five years ago, but had stomach and pelvic pain since childhood. Thank you for sharing your work.

The fact that you two are so incredibly caring discussing this issue is so refreshing. I've dealt with so many doctors who ignored my pain but didnt even broach the subject of potential trauma (i have a high ACEs score and a lot of trauma) before making me feel insane for saying my pin levels were as high as they are

I have similar symptoms to fibromyalgia following surgery. I already had CPTSD prior to surgery, not officially diagnosed a counsellor just mentioned it sounded like this. I went to a neurologist yesterday, he asked me all about my childhood which was pretty traumatic. I appreciate people making these mind/body connection but I do think the neurologist needed more training in understanding trauma. I felt re-traumatised by him bringing up the memories then simply leaving it and moving onto physical symptoms. It resulted in me having terrible nightmares last night and recalling torture from my so called mother and grandmother when I was two. I don't think it is appropriate for a health professional to raise an issue then leave it. I felt it was highly irresponsible actually but I guess the assessment was holistic, never mind it acted as a major trigger to me. I also believe that recognising the influence of prior trauma is important but shouldn't be taken out of current environmental context. I had the same miserable childhood before my surgery but I was still active, able to walk, shop, drive and dance. Now I am wheelchair bound with a full time carer. The key variable is the surgery, not the childhood trauma, irrespective of how my nervous system was biologically primed to react negatively to the trauma of surgery.

Very interesting, do you do anything to reduce this "stuck" flight or flight reaction, do you see any success to reactivate that frontal lobe activity with your stress modulation training?
@DrMartinRutherford8 жыл бұрын
Thank you for the message. We have seen that by activating particular areas of the frontal lobe, PTSD symptoms have improved in patients we have selected for treatment. We also address underlying biochemical factors that interfere with frontal lobe function.

You guys are fabulous 😍 I've been following you for years, but never put a comment before. I developed fibromyalgia and PTSD from an ex boyfriend who mentally, verbally, emotionally and psychologically abused me 😭 I often feel cross wires in my brain and feel like I am going cross eyed, making reading difficult for me nowadays. Is there any way I can try and manage this symptom? Thanks very much for all of your advice and research ❤

I am in Birmingham Alabama. Are there any doctors in my area that do the kind of work that you do for fibromyalgia patients? Thanks.
@DrMartinRutherford8 жыл бұрын
The short answer to your question is we unfortunately don't know of anyone in your area. The longer answer is that we have married two disciplines (functional medicine and chiropractic neurology) to put together what we feel is the most comprehensive program for chronic problems available today. While there are others who claim to do similar treatments we have not met any who practice exactly how we do and have made referrals in the past where the results were less than stellar. We have patients that we have worked with from all over the world. If you would like to find out how you can schedule a consultation with Dr. Rutherford to go over you particular case you can find out more at powerhealthreno.com/brochure

@glynnisthomas91652 жыл бұрын
That actually makes sense. The horrific pain on a daily constant basis could also turn ptsd into complex ptsd. I'm no doctor so my words are perfectly worthless, but it does seem to me to be a good possibility.
