This model Peerless differential breaks all the time in the Heald Hauler and Trike models. The Comet version was an upgrade to the peerless and generally didn't break. The peerless is only rated for 11 horsepower and the housing is diecast and usually what breaks. Be sure to use bentonite for lube. There was a guy in Scotland who made billet aluminum housings for these that also added bearings in place of the brass bushings, but unfortunately he has retired. I thought someone would have started making these again by now as there still seems to be a demand for them.
@Personal_Track_Vehicle4 жыл бұрын
I agree all the way around. Peerless is still making them but making them really hard to find and buy, through a distributor. I am signed up with them now but the only way I can get any real deal is to buy like 25 of them at a time! I know I am over powering it on my latest but so far, so good.

NICE WORK SIR! I'm a paraplegic and desperately need something like this so I can get deeper into the woods, creeks etc w/ my G-sons. I've worked as a welder/fab man/machinist way back before my accident and I think this is right up my alley(with help of course). I'm trying to see this baby w/ a seat, maybe lower center of gravity, etc.. I can't thank you enough for publishing all the R&D/part numbers, fails, and triumphs. If you have any ideas for a seated version, I'm all ears! LOL Looking forward to video 5...Thanks again JD

Jeff Davis thanks and God bless the work of your hands as you proceed! Advantage is the fact it's all hand controlled, never really thought about that until now. Reverse would be a good benefit for your situation and I've thought about that.
@jeffdavis95756 жыл бұрын
Yessir, handcontrol was 1 of the 1st things I saw plus your R&D and instructions are awesome too. Most comprehensive build I've ever seen on here, I pray I can afford to build 1 too. When you say torque converter, you mean the clutch? I used to build Honda Oddysey ATV's that use the same clutch design. I have an aftermarket one w/ a bigger 1-inch belt and the stall and "shift" points are adjustable w/ the weights and springs. They actually claim its a 2 speed, but it's just a point where the springs allow the belt deeper in it's "pulley" thus changing ratio. Just 1 more tuning aspect I hadn't seen you touch on yet. Have you noticed that ability w/ your clutch? Godspeed kind sir!
@Personal_Track_Vehicle6 жыл бұрын
Jeff Davis TAV 20 is what I believe I used on the first one. It is a Comet-clone torque converter system. Really sounds like you know more about clutch systems than I do! But it is a common system on go karts and mini bikes. Since I'm going with a bigger engine on this one, I bumped up to what is called a series 40. I actually have another series of videos in my build of my first one that may help you as well. Although they are not as detailed as the one I'm building this time. I could easily see this build with a swivel type seat with a lock on it as well. Very interesting application and it would be really cool if you could work toward that. I really wanted to go through the woods with my dog and I've done that several times with my other one. Stay in touch, and let me know if there's anything I can do for you.
@jeffdavis95756 жыл бұрын
It's been many years since I've played w/ mine You may want to look at the engine and driveline on a FL250 or 350 Honda Odyssey. It uses a gear box over an open chained jack shaft and the 350 has reverse. It may give you some ideas you haven't come up with yet. You can make crazy power w a 250, way too much for the stock chassis imo. The engine is configured for your type of drive. Please let me know what you think if you do check it out
@Personal_Track_Vehicle6 жыл бұрын
Great idea, will check out, exactly an option I have needed to consider. On one of my earlier videos (perhaps you have already seen) I had a Suzuki 125 quad engine (with reverse) on it. Comet also makes a generic reverse unit, or used to make it anyway. Thanks for your interest!!

Going to need vertical bracing to keep that frame from flexing. The cross bars you putting in will only do so much with the flexing. You still have to put the motor plate in and would be a great place to put vertical triamgulation off that.

Yeah, this is a tough one. Peerless went through a bankruptcy or was sold, but I have talked with them and Central Power Distributors wholesales them, so I got approved but I would have to buy like 25 to get any kind of deal. Staton.inc has them though. Thanks for watching and a great question!

I want to make an electric bike trailer using the same differential on leaf springs. Do you have any ideas how i would support it so the differential case would not crack like yours did? Or is there a better way to use this differential with a different type of suspension? thanks for awesome video.
@Personal_Track_Vehicle3 жыл бұрын
Is there a reason you need a differential rather than a simple trailer axle? To answer your question, four pillow block bearings are normally perfect support for it. My frame was never welded strong to begin with, that was my problem. Thanks for watching!

@Personal_Track_Vehicle4 жыл бұрын
Never thought about it but it's easy. Unbolt the four housing bolts and it comes apart. Maybe simple circlips holding the gears on the inner splines, can't remember. Thanks for the suggestion, if I ever take it out I will be sure to do one. I think there is a video out there somewhere, thanks for watching.

Your drive axle....think thats for got carts.....way too weak...I have a Raid trac....there are track drive machine.....they use a solid axle....with clutch packs to disengage....and disk breaks...the clutch packs have think four plates...and clutch plates per side....they use size 50 chain to drive......hope this helps you.....add all three wheels at the back....stronger the better.

Very good points. This was the axle designated for the Magic Carpet track vehicle so I used it on this one, and the next one. It's good up to 10 hp and I am certainty pushing it with my 13 hp builds but I know that the stress came from the weakness of my frame. I REALLY like the idea of clutch packs and you have inspired me to look into it some more, to this point I hadn't been able to find some that I thought would work. Thanks for watching and commenting!
