Created by award-winning director and documentary filmmaker Hanan Abdalla, this new documentary captures the story behind our epic, multi-venue reimagining of The Odyssey.
Staged as part of the National Theatre’s nationwide community programme, Public Acts, Odysseus’ journey was performed by hundreds of community members and local artists at five venues across the UK.
- Restoke in Stoke-on-Trent
- Cast in Doncaster
- Trowbridge Town Hall in Trowbridge
- The Fire Station (for Sunderland Culture in partnership with Sunderland Empire) in Sunderland
- Olivier Theatre at the National Theatre in London.
In this short film, we get a unique insight into this landmark production and the people who brought it to life, featuring moving portraits of the company members as they prepare to be on stage, some for the first time in their lives.
The Odyssey is the National Theatre's most ambitious nationwide community theatre project yet, celebrating the transformative power of theatre in bringing communities together.

It was such a privilege to be part of this National Theatre. Thank you for everything. This was a truly magical experience and having this documentary to help look back at it is extremely valuable. I will never forget it.

I think this is brilliant and I remember a touring acting/dance group visiting my school when I was I and I thought it was incredible. More ideas like this need to happen in the world of opera which I love but is suffering from ageism and needs young blood, fresh modern ideas that young diverse audiences will relate too.
