I saw their first US performance with the original lineup in 1980, and it was terrible. They didn't even try to sound like any of the records.
@crnkmnky5 жыл бұрын
@@buzzbabyjesus "Sounding like the records" is not the point of live music. Could you be more specific on which brand of terrible was offered that night?
@buzzbabyjesus5 жыл бұрын
@@crnkmnky I should have said they didn't even try to play anything recognizable. Just endless Wobble grooves. Later I heard that Keith and Johnny were on acid. At one point, Johnny pulled a kid up out of the audience and handed him the lyric sheet, crossed his arms and watched everything in a bored manner. It was anti-performance, and very punk rock.
@crnkmnky5 жыл бұрын
@@buzzbabyjesus That's pretty funny. Now I understand your earlier comment! Did you enjoy the experience?
@buzzbabyjesus5 жыл бұрын
@@crnkmnky Everything about it was strange. The venue in downtown LA, usually hosted boxing, and at that time, no one went downtown at night. We got there late and missed Los Plugz, and Los Lobos. PiL went on with just Wobble and the drummer for about 10 minutes and proceeded to interminable shambles with Johnny and Keith. I have the poster, framed, however, which I love, as an artifact.

@margaretsavage154810 жыл бұрын
As I watch him here and now in his older years, something seems to be amiss. I saw him in New Orleans in 3/87. I was already listening to PIL. However, I did not know about Johnny Rotten although someone had told me about the Sex Pistols and of Johnny Rotten, who I did not equate with PIL. When he came out, I was taken a back. I could have sworn that he had pink and light blue braids in his hair. And, his presence was definitely felt. You can't get that from this video. However, his taking the stage is something I'll never forget. I didn't look at him again after he walked out. I was dancing in the back the whole time. I can tell you this much, after seeing PIL, I had no interest in seeing INXS who was headlining, anymore, As Micheal Hutchensen ran the catwalk, all I could think was do I have to endure this. To take youthful mindsets and good looks for granted. I had someone say they didn't believe I was ever any other way than I am now. It seems almost like a different lifetime. That was a year that I am glad that I did not miss out on.
@margaretsavage154810 жыл бұрын
I swear there weren't more than two hundred of us that caught him opening for INXS. It's odd to see how well-known he was and have few of us that were there. And, I just happened to wind up seeing him unintentionally. It was one of those surprises you don't expect and couldn't have even hoped for. I love in the MTV interview when he says, "I'm not a performing seal." and the whole "My Way" view. I can understand not wanting to be a marionette in someone's vapid play.
@margaretsavage154810 жыл бұрын
I can't stand to see him like this. It's really hard on me. I want to hold onto the Cassette and remember him at that time. It's like when people are passing and want to be remembered the way they had been. I think this is more difficult seeing what was before, what I knew, what could have been and what was for him even more so than for myself.
@danmarley47958 жыл бұрын
+Margaret Savage I saw him in July 86 at Mesa Centenial Hall in Arizona. The promoter wanted to cancel the show, but Johnny insisted the show go on. He played to about 100 people essentially in a banquet hall.
