Hey SunRaes! This video was not intended to bash UFD; it was for informational purposes only. I made this video because some people wanted to know of glycerin-free gels, not because I personally thought glycerin was bad. Please do not get in my comments and argue with one another as to whether or not glycerin is good or bad. It is up the the user as to whether or not they want to use glycerin. If glycerin works for you and you don't mind it being in a product, that's great. But if someone prefers not to use glycerin for whatever reason, that is their prerogative and they should be aware of whether or not the ingredient is in a product. Please be respectful of one another's opinions with regards to glycerin and their hair. Thank you! xoxo

Thank you!!! I pay close attention to what I’m paying for, and it’s known that glycerine is used as a filler not only humectant, sure glycerine helps with slip and adding moisture but I’m not paying top dollar for a product loaded with glycerine….again as a consumer it’s MY decision on what ingredients I choose not to use whether they are harmful or not. It’s weird that people are acting like it’s not a big deal because what else have they changed without disclosing. I called UFD and asked about the ingredients in my previous orders of the Curly Magic (no glycerin, no hydrolyzed wheat protein, etc) compared to my most recent orders of Curly Magic. A woman in sales stated "The ingredients have been the same since the beginning of time. We started updated our labels a few months ago to reflect it". So I said, "all these years, I've been using a product that was mislabeled?" Her reply - "We have updated the label". Suffice to say, I am returning the product and getting my money back. It is misleading, unethical, dangerous* and fraudulent to sell a product knowing full well "Since the beginning of time", that the ingredients are not what is listed on their bottles.

Thank you for this video! I purchased UFD for the first time last week and recently used it for a wash n go. I noticed that when I used the gel, my hair was sticky, took forever to dry and overall the results were not what I was expecting at all. I was puzzled because KKCC worked extremely well in my hair and I thought the ingredients in the two gels were similar, so I thought I applied UFD wrong or something. Thank you so much for this information, this was super helpful. The company has had ample time to change the label, how shameful. I am returning UFD immediately and going back to KKCC.

After using wetline you probably at a minimum should using a clarifying gel before switching to a botanical gel like UFD. Also for best results you would not apply UFD like you would wetline either. It should be smoothed into soaking wet hair adding more water as you go (best done in the shower). UFD LOVES warm water and it is a humectant gel that needs a lot of water for good distribution. Also if you air dry UFD you will have problems with it taking forever to dry and it being sticky. This also can happen if you don't use enough water, or too much product. But I know a lot of licensed tight curly specialists (they own salons) that use this gel as a base gel and they say most people don't apply it correctly and end up with the issues you mentioned. So sometimes the issue can be technique and not the product. Though I am still pissed at UFD.

I don’t trust the Company at all. The ingredients definitely changed in 2014. Their customers were upset so they “changed it back” which sound ridiculous since it takes a while and wasted money to reformulate a product back so quickly. What they actually did was just change the label. They always used glycerin and wheat protein in the formula since 2014. Quite despicable. Particularly for those of us with wheat/gluten allergies who need to know that the product contains wheat protein. My hair is finicky with the UFD, with mostly positive styling results, however I noticed thinning and breakage overtime (ends of my hair looked fried and dried out) that I only ever experienced with Ecostyler gel (Wheat protein). I thought it was maybe the aloe Vera, but I did not have these issues with Kinky-Curly. This is not the way to win customers and run an honest business.

Totally not your fault at all! It's really confusing what's been going on with this brand. It seems like this isn't the first time formulas have changed. I looked around online and seems like the original owners started the brand in 2009 and at some point they changed the formula of the curl stimulator and added glycerin. Then in 2014 a woman named Renee bought the company at which time she returned the curl stimulator back it's original formula (that didn't contain glycerin) and also brought back some discontinued products. This was awesome because consumers loved the original formulas and products. However, very recently (sometime late 2019 or early 2021) they've changed the formula of the curl stimulator and added glycerin again. As far as I know Renee is still the owner of the company though. I don't know if the company is trying to cut costs and changing the formula is better for their profit margin or if COVID is making it more difficult to source certain ingredients. Either way, it's a shame they've changed the formula... people aren't loving the new formula with glycerin at all. If you have a bottle without glycerin, that's the original formula that made the brand so popular. Which is gold! Anything you buy now is the new formula (unless a store happens to have some old stock which is unlikely).

Thank you for making this video. It is disappointing to learn there's Glycerin in this product and they were aware of it but totally knew this product was extremely popular among the Glycerin-sensitive curlies and they said NOTHING! What is quite concerning as well, is the fact that if they added Glycerin to the product back in 2014, what type of business takes 7+ years just to update their product labels? I checked my bottles (I have a few liter bottles) and I don't see Glycerin in the ingredients but apparently the labels are totally suspect. The one thing I must say as far was how I use this gel, I don't use it or any other gel without a Leave-In and my leave-ins don't contain Glycerin (as far as I know) so that alone can have an impact how Glycerin may effect your hair. For me, I've noticed that I can get away with using gels with Glycerin, likely because of the non-Glycerin product(s) below it. AND I do find my results are a few notches better during the cool/cold months than in the hot/humid months. As I'm writing this, I am wearing a twistout I did using Natures Little Secret Banana Leave-in, Natures Little Secret Strawberry Styling Smoothie, sealed my twists with Melanin Hair Care Oil and finished with what.................UFD Curly Magic! I have to say my twistout is BOMB and I will use this combo again! But I'm still disappointed in UFD for improperly labeling their products. It's not necessarily bad, it's just that some people are sensitive to it or prefer not to use it for climate reasons or some other reason. I was just trying to give them options and by not having it listed on their bottles, it leads people to believe that it's not in there when, in fact, it is. If you don't have a problem with glycerin, I'd say give this gel a try and see if it works for you. Thanks for watching.

I always thought it had glycerin because it was so moisturizing. Of course they should have let their customers know because of their sensitivities. Not a good look UFD. ☹️ I just got a new bottle from Amazon, but the labels are the same except one lists what kind of vitamin E and the other just says vitamin E. I personally don’t mind glycerin. Return your bottles if you do.

I don't mind glycerin either, but I know some of my subbies do so that is why I wanted to do the video. However, if the information isn't correct, then no one can make an informed decision about their hair. tsk,tsk, tsk. Anywho, thanks for watching.😊

Wow if this is true then I am going back to my diy spray that I use in the early 2000s.When I just wanted a moisturized afro I used it along and when wanted definition I just use eco or wetline, never thought to put my diy under the gel, i am going to try.I like UFD but if I can get the same out come with my diy for pennies ,then I will revisit my diy.

I had a a few bottles to use for when I can’t get a hold of KCCC (I only wear wash and gos).The very last one that I used, did not work well in my hair at all. My hair felt horrible. I threw away my bottle, but I wish I would have checked the label. I specifically purchased that because there was no glycerin. Thank you for the information and thank you for the time you put into this. I won’t be purchasing anymore.

KInky Curly Curling Custard says "Natural Fragrance" but other than that I don't know any either. Everything has a fragrance that I have seen. If you go to Etsy you can customize handcrafted hair gels to be fragrance free.

I can recommend trying Curl Junkie Pattern Pusha as an alternative. It does have mild fragrance (kind of a cucumber-y scent imo), but it's a gentle botanical gel that's free of aloe, protein, & flax.

I hear the glycerin is the devil comment quite a lot and I can’t help but wonder if the people saying it are aware that glycerin has different affects based upon the conditions in which it’s used. By that I mean it can make your hair feel dry if you use it in cold or dry conditions or it can make your hair swell if you use it in humid conditions. For me it’s best in summer (I live in GA) because even though it’s super hot, the glycerin attracts the moisture from the atmosphere and keeps my hair feeling nice and moisturized. There’s an OG youtuber that I used to watch a lot I think her channel is now called Elevate. It used to be Denim Pixie. She does a really good job at explaining things like this even down to the best dew points to use glycerin and avoid negative outcomes. Just in case anyone wants to know.

This is the best comment I've read on here thus far. Glycerin is like anything else, it is only a bad thing if you're allergic to it. It is a natural product therefore, if its not causing a skin/scalp reaction, you should be fine. Glycerin does works best in warm, humid climates and is more beneficial when your hair worn in its natural state because it attracts water/ hydration in the air which is always a good thing for natural hair. Additionally, just because an ingredient is listed at the top doesn't mean that the whole formula is mostly that ingredient. The combination of other oils, humectants, plant based butters, would more than likely supersede the amount of glycerine in any hair care product or it will more than likely be unusable. Someone mentioned ordering customized products on etsy. This is true. You can shoot a convo to sellers asking them to omit or swap ingredient(s). #beglam

That is why some people favor products “without” glycerin, because they understand this and they would prefer to use one product consistently in all environments and in all weather conditions.
@ShowUpGTD3 жыл бұрын
But isn't glycerin a humectant? I googled it and it said that it wasn't bad for your hair. Is there something that I'm missing about glycerin?
@NaturalRaeRae3 жыл бұрын
No, glycerin isn't bad per se. But some people live in climates where glycerin can wreak havoc on their hair or some people may be allergic to it. The issue is that everyone was under the impression that this product was glycerin-free because it wasn't stated on the label, but, in fact, it does contain glycerin. In short...the company needs to have the label correct so that people can make informed decisions about the product that they use. Hope this helps.

I'm not really shocked it's a really good humectant. I think people just don't understand how to use them, to either avoid reactivation or pulling the water out of the hair itself.

Not true I can tell I have 2 different formulas the old bottle I purchased from Target worked wonderfully and the bottle i purchased from the website dried my hair out, even though I used both the same exact way……. Extremely deceiving I avoid products with glycerine so for them to sneak it in there to cut cost Is just shameful
@anthonymarshall20123 жыл бұрын
@@leoskiss3390 I can't really vouch for your technique to say why it dried your hair out, but I do know humectants work by pulling hydrogen molecules together. So if there's not enough water in your hair, on your hair, and when you're doing your hair then it may dry your hair out by pulling the water that you try to put in your hair out hence drying it out. It's similar to when people use hyaluronic acid and they don't seal it in and then the hyaluronic acid makes their skin even more drier than before.
@leoskiss33903 жыл бұрын
@@anthonymarshall2012 I’m familiar with the techniques on skin and hair I’m 40 so I’m accustomed to sealing moisture to my skin and hair, I’m simply saying that if you have 2 bottles of the “same” products and 1 is behaving differently and then it comes out that 1 of the formulas changed it’s deceiving to the consumer that’s all, I’m aware of humectants such as aloe, glycerine and honey

Hi Anthony! Thanks for tuning in to my video. However, I do want to say that I'm glad you were not affected by the formula change and although it is not a big deal to you, it is to those who are allergic to glycerin. We're not saying glycerin is bad, we're just saying that it should be listed so people who are allergic knows right off the bat not to use it so that they don't have a bad reaction. Safety first is my motto! Again, thanks for watching.
