In this video, I run through the different types of public transport in Amsterdam and how to use them. I cover the tram, metro, ferry and bus (run by GVB) as well as the train (run by NS). In terms of tickets I talk about the GVB ticket, iamsterdam city card, OV card as well as prices and where to buy them. I also talk about OVpay which has very recently been introduced and is available on the GVB network. Finally I share a tip if you get lost on the bus or tram. Whether you are visiting or you’re moving to Amsterdam; I give you the low down on how to use the public transport here. NB I also reference Amsterdam Centraal Station quite a few times. It is a major transportation hub and is a great starting point for buying all ticket types, as well accessing all forms of public transport. Thank you for watching.

ABOUT ME
Hello there! My name is Daniella Perera and I’m an artist and vlogger based in Amsterdam, the Netherlands. I grew up in Hong Kong and the UK, and I’m of mixed heritage including Chinese, Sri-Lankan, Dutch and Portuguese.
Near the end of 2020, I moved from Kuala Lumpur to Amsterdam with my husband. I have since fallen in love with this city, and I make KZbin videos (every other weekend) about things to do in Amsterdam and tips to settle in faster. The idea behind 'Pocket Lighthouse' was to shine a light on the above topics, and for this information to be accessible on the go.
One of my long-term goals is to use my creativity (whether that be through art or video) to regularly support organisations helping strays and shelter dogs. Needless to say I absolutely adore dogs.

NEVER use metro 51 to get to stations Zuid or Sloterdijk from the city center. You'll waste tons of time and likely arrive late since it's a massive detour that goes around the city. To get to Zuid, use metro 52 (it'll bring you there in 10 minutes). Sloterdijk can be reached by train in about 8 minutes, or by bus if you only have a GVB card (and no OV-chipkaart). Also, if you're staying for at least a week or visiting other cities, please look into getting and using an anonymous OV-chipkaart.

Nice explanation of our public transport. What I often see going "wrong" is that visitors are not always sure where they are and then panic and try to read all the information around them. An easy option is increasingly forgotten: ask other people! There is always a Dutch person nearby who can provide information. We like to do it, even though we can come across as quite distant. ;-) And a pro tip: in most trams you can press the button to open the doors once while driving. The light will then flash. When you arrive at the stop, the door opens automatically. You don't have to press anymore.

Nobody cares about that!! The prices make no sense, there’s a million hidden charges and it’s almost as if all the apps and websites have been made obsolete on purpose so you kind of just have to throw yourself in and hope for the best.

This is an excellent video! Clear, concise, and full of valuable information. Do you happen to know if NS trains do not do seat reservations for domestic trips (and does this mean one can potentially sit anywhere in a wagon of the class for which they purchased their ticket)? Also NS-related, since the one-way tickets do not specify any times, is it safe to assume that one can take any train within those 24-hours in their desired direction?
@pocketlighthouse
@pocketlighthouse 10 ай бұрын
Thank you v much for the positive feedback on this video. For all the domestic trips I've taken with NS trains so far - I have not reserved a seat and have just tried to find one. Most of the time I do, but it v much depends on what day, location & time you travel. In terms of the validity of the ticket I would assume you can only travel on the date of that ticket - but given you mention 24 hours I would double check this with NS directly.

@pocketlighthouse
@pocketlighthouse 7 ай бұрын
Thanks for the positive feedback. Yes the Gvb ticket is just for the Gvb network which covers broadly speaking central amsterdam. Zaanse Schans is in Zaandam, so the Gvb ticket won't get you there. I believe you can take the train, or bus run by another company called connexxion.

Hi Tamara, thank you for your comment. In my experience using NS trains, I haven't needed to tap in & out when doing a train transfer and simply changing platforms. @pocketlighthouse
@pocketlighthouse 10 ай бұрын
Thank you for your positive feedback. For the ticket reader, you could use OV pay which means you can use your debit, credit card or mobile phone. I would double check the OV pay website for a list of permitted cards. The QR code reader is used for example by people who have bought a GVB ticket using the app. Given all the choices available, having a paper ticket is the easiest and quickest to scan.

@pocketlighthouse Жыл бұрын
Hi there and thank you for the positive feedback. I'm glad the video is helpful. It depends where exactly you're visiting and frequency. On the NS website, have a look at the different ticket options eg advance/group tickets, the Amsterdam regional ticket (as it does cover Haarlem) and the Holland ticket (to go further afield). Separately for the 24H GVB or iamsterdam ticket, yes always tap in and out for every ride.

@pocketlighthouse
@pocketlighthouse 10 ай бұрын
Thank you for your positive feedback on my video. It means a lot to me! If you're referring to a group ticket using the GVB app, you get a separate code for each person. However just to let you know, I have observed people having issues scanning the QR code. I would strongly recommend buying a paper ticket before getting on any public transport. With a paper ticket, you can move on and off the tram quickly and each person can also be responsible for their own ticket (as opposed to the GVB app group ticket which can only be on 1 phone).

Given that you're travelling in 2 places, a blue OV chipcard is probably the better choice. I'm glad this video has been helpful and I hope you have a great time! For the trams, they don't automatically stop at every station - so you definitely need to press the bell in good time. A lot of trams will have a screen in the carriage showing the route in real time, plus there'll be announcements of the next stop. Occasionally the screens aren't working (and the announcements are hard to hear), so it does help being vaguely familiar with the names of the tram stops ahead of time. Worst case, look at the ticket reader for the name of the next stop.

OVpay is pretty widespread. I don't know off the top of my head if it's fully fully rolled out across all networks in the country. It's worth checking if your foreign bank card would be accepted. I think buying the GVB paper ticket is the best way to go for unlimited travel as it's one payment upfront (as opposed to multiple payments) and it's quick to scan at the ticket reader too.

If you travel outside of Amsterdam, I would get an anonymous ov-chipcard. The Iamsterdam card is only valid within Amsterdam(,I think, 95% sure). It is not valid in Baarle Nasau, Giethoorn, Zaanse Schans. GVB is an Amsterdam City public transport Company, only operation in Amsterdam. Different cities/regions have different companies, For instance, Rotterdam has RET, not GVB. To cover the whole country, buy a blue anonymous ov-chip-card (hard plastic, not paper). You can buy them at train stations.

Hi Kunal. With regard to your travel query, the Amsterdam Regional Travel Ticket would only cover your Zanse Schans trip and not Baarle Nasau or Giethoorn. Depending on your travel plans, it would be worth looking into the Holland Travel Ticket instead on the NS website as this will get you further afield. I would also compare this with the other NS ticket deals on offer eg group tickets, advance tickets. As for the blue OV chipcard, you can also travel on the train with I believe a minimum balance of €20 on it, but I would certainly look into the above deals first.

Hi there. It's difficult for me to say as it will really depend on your itinerary. As you're staying a month, an OV anonymous chipcard might come in handy. But you might also want to consider something like the Holland Travel Ticket/Amsterdam & Region Travel Ticket depending on your itinerary.

If I am a tourist that is going to be in Amsterdam, Leiden, Rotterdam, and Utrecht over the course of a week, would the anonymous OV card be the best option? Thank you!
@pocketlighthouse

It depends on the frequency of your travel but overall I'd say probably yes as having to buy a ticket before each and every trip from a machine/counter would be a pain. In addition it's worth checking the different ticket options available from NS as there's quite a big range. Buying tickets online from NS is also €1 cheaper than buying the paper version.

As an update, I did end up getting the anonymous card. I recommend that over tapping your own credit card because at the end of the trip, I was able to go to an attendant at the station who refunded me the remaining balance on the card and fix my account for the few times i incorrectly tapped in and tapped out.

Hello there! Great video, thanks a lot! A question - I'm going to arrive in Amsterdam Schiphol in a few days. I'm planning to stay in Amsterdam for 3 days, that's why I'm going to buy the GVB 72hrs ticket. Does this ticket cover my transfer from the airport to the city center? Or do I have to buy a NS ticket as well?
@holycrapchris

GVB doesn't cover intercity rail, so if you take NS rail, that's a separate ticket.

Oh, and protip, there are two NS ticket machines at the airport before you pass the customs area. Those will likely be less busy than the machines closer to the platform.

@@holycrapchris Thank you very, very much for your replies. Your tip seems really helpful - however, I've noticed that when purchasing an NS ticket, I have to enter the exact time I'm planning to board the train. Isn't it a bit risky to purchase a ticket from a NS machine far away from the platform - in case, e.g., I don't find my way easily to the train platforms and dont get there on time?....

I want to know does this 3 day travel pass cover the train from Schiphol Airport to Zaandam or will I have to pay a single fare from the Airport to Zaandam. @@garysandel6549 No man, just my view on things, but you are being manipulated and scammed. In the Netherlands every advertisement that talks about financing, is obligated to announce 'Borrowing money costs money'. Companies, including credit card companies, only exist to make money. There is nothing wrong with companies in that sense, but you as a consumer should be aware of that. No commercial product has been sold, ever, to make your life better. It was sold to make profit.
