One of the reasons this opera isn't performed more often is that sopranos consider the role of Minnie a voice wrecker. I couldn't argue with that. Thank you to those who scale that mountain of give us much pleasure.

It's called " the "italian brunhilde" .and the tenor part sure isn't easy either. I think it isn't performed because unless you are the Met, covent garden or one of the other too tier companies, it's hard to get that many men willing to sing chorus and compramario roles. Another factor is there is only 1 major female role and hundreds of available sopranos. Netrebko is planning on doing it soon.

The greatest Act (one) closing ever. I was stunned the first I heard it. Puccini was a genius.

Some sopranos close this Act 1 with a trailing wail. It's effective if she doesn't drown out the orchestral fade.

I loved this right up until the last minute -- at which point some German director decided that alienation and not redemption was the theme of the opera. Dammit!
