I would never take my eye off the puck when it is coming down the boards. One anomaly in the dasher boards and the puck is in front of the empty net.

Very helpful video. As a beginner goalie, it's so awkward handling the puck with an opposite hand stick lol

Usually, if you are playing with an opposite hand stick, you were never tested to see which hand you are naturally. Chances are, your catcher should be on the other hand. I always give new goalies a quick test. Without warning, I toss a tennis ball at the quick. No time to think, just pure reaction. Which ever hand you reach for the ball with is your catcher hand. If you need to use your catcher at the top of your stick to handle the puck, I advise you don't hand loose pucks. My reasoning is simple.. You will waste time moving hands around. If anything goes wrong, there is a good chance of you losing control of your stick. And/or putting yourself out of position. As a Goalie, we can't afford to be even slightly out of position. The game is too fast and the players too skilled.

@@seanratcliffe9419 Many goalies are the opposite hand. For example I am a right handed player meaning I shoot right handed. But as a goalie I catch left, meaning as a goalie I need to shoot left handed. This was hard for me, but if you just practice at it every chance you get, you will become better each day.

@@seanratcliffe9419 funny thing here. My boy is a true lefty in life and if he’s skating out. Plays baseball left so naturally catches with his right hand and throws with the left. He absolutely will not catch a puck with his right hand. He only wants to play regular. But as a goalie he can play the puck as a lefty would skating out. Can’t catch a baseball with his left hand to save his life and can’t catch a puck with his right hand. It’s so weird to me he is so backwards with each sport compared to the other when it comes to the catching part.

@@seanratcliffe9419 I get what your saying but with new goalies, it should only matter what hand is dominant, what hand they throw a ball with is usually their blocker hand because you need to hold your stick and blocker in that hand, you also don’t catch with the same hand you throw with so usually it’s the opposite hand that is better for catching, it also matter where you throw the ball at them when you test them, I catch with both hands well it just matters where, and regardless of playing the puck, that just takes time, it’s a learning curve, nobody is ever and I mean ever good at it immediately, I’m AAA U18 and am extremely good at handling the puck but that’s cause I practice, my backup goalie isn’t as good but he never works on it, so he doesn’t get better at it
