Spring Spanish - Learn Spanish with Chunks

Күн бұрын

Puedo Tener is a very common literal translation of "Can I have" in Spanish. But it's just wrong. Literal translations don't work in most cases. Instead, you will learn in this video how to ask for things in Spanish and always sound like a native Spanish speaker when doing so!

Yes, I agree with your idea of learning a language "in chunks". That's how children learn. They don't know grammar. They just say what other people around them say. Having been trying to learn Spanish on my own for years, and having taught English a bit in Mexico, I agree that dialog, chunks - that's the way to do it

@Venik75

Well I’m not sure about the definition of “idiomatically incorrect” but I guess it’s that because it’s not grammatically incorrect but you can’t use it in those situation (well you can but doesn’t sound natural, especially in Mexico); it’s more like “I am able to have” for exemple you can say “Claro que puedo tener una vida normal!” (Of course that I can have a normal life) or something like that.

I'm really frustrated with these "DON'T SAY X" videos because they tend to be things like "hola" or "por favor" that are actually said ALL THE TIME by native speakers, and I guess the point is to expand your Spanish with other options. So I don't know if "puedo tener" is grammatically wrong, awkward, or absolutely fine everyday speech that Spring Spanish has suddenly decided to forbid to get clicks.
@margaritakleinman5701
@margaritakleinman5701 2 жыл бұрын
@@max_pin I agree with you that using the phrase "Don't Say -----" gives the impression that the word or phrase (like "de nada", "como estas?" etc.) is wrong, when actually the phrase is completely correct and is used all the time, and the point of the video is to give other alternative ways of saying these phrases, in order to enrich the person's vocabulary. However, in the case of "puedo tener", it is simply wrong, and no Spanish speaker would ever say that. It doesn't have the same meaning in Spanish as it does in English.
@margaritakleinman5701
@margaritakleinman5701 2 жыл бұрын
@@ksmith2852 Yes, but I think it's not so much about sounding like a Mexican, as it is about learning to speak as correctly as possible so as to communicate better. Why continue to use a phrase or word if you know it's incorrect? People may understand you when you say "puedo tener", but wouldn't you want, if possible, to learn how to ask correctly? Because as Paulisima said, "puedo tener" is simply wrong.

@@decipheryu4215 in my experience it’s better to be corrected then to assume you’re right. Every Spanish is different and certain words can be offensive in other countries. My family is from Peru but I’m first generation in USA. I want to go back and visit my family so I recently started learning how to speak it instead of just understanding and then responding in English. Tried using words that I would hear in Spanish from Peru but the Dominican’s, PR’s, and even Mexicans didn’t understand those words. I looked like a fool to them but as I started studying that’s when I found out about the different words each country uses.
@calebw8189

@@Vigiliantez "It works fine" doesn't equate to it being natural or correct. E.g. if a foreigner starts ordering food by saying "you give me one hamburger...", we obviously understand what they want, but it sounds unnatural and even bossy. I agree with what you said about learning by the region, but "puedo tener" is not an appropriate phrase for ordering food in any part of the Spanish-speaking world, even Peru.

@@Vigiliantez It's also worth mentioning that all of the alternatives suggested in this video are neutral and are standard in most if not all Spanish-speaking countries. I understand being concerned about learning too many "mexicanismos" if you're going to Peru, but that's not the case with video.

I am still not clear- are you teaching Spanish OR teaching how Spanish is used in Mexico? That is colloquial terminology and phrases which may be right in other Spanish speaking countries but not used in Mexico. Is it like f.g. to root for someone or something esp in America means supporting/barracking but in Australia the word root has a sexual meaning - rooting someone meaning having sex with someone hence most Australians would not say they were rooting for a team.

Es español mexicano. Y muchas de las expresiones que se usan en México también se usan en otros países de habla hispana. Eres de Australia? ¡Saludos!

Will the restaurant workers be offended if I use the informal conjugations?

nah, you can use them in almost any situation, unless you are in a very fancy restaurant, as the other diners you are with may look at you strangely or think that you have no manners, there it would be better that you use the other less informal phrases towards the waitress.
