I was visiting my parents. I lived in Boston. Not only Maria but before Maria was Hurricane Irma. We live near San Juan and both knocked down the electricity for days Irma was a very strong Hurricane as Maria. The experience of Maria tattooed our souls. I stayed with my parents and never returned to Boston. Took 8 months to recovered the power grid in the area. We never received help. There were so many people in more need than us. We recovered little by little till some normality in the abnormal life we started to face. But still there’s a ghostly feeling when the wind blows.

Yes, but i have to be honest with you... everyone liked irma because they got their little Fema checks and it was all alright. Now maria... Maria was something else... no one cares about the little fema maria checks.. we just wanted everything back to normal please.. it took 6 months for my house, and almost a year to most of the island.

I lived through this catastrophe and the amount of physical and psychological damage hurricane María brought to our beautiful island was unimaginable. I had to live 8 whole months without electricity or phone signal and that was nothing compared to the people who lost their houses or had family members dying during the aftermath. My school was also filled with refugees, so I couldn't attend it until January 2018. Life's were lost, money was lost, the people's sanity, education, everything, we literally lost everything after this hurricane hit land. 2 years after and we're still recovering from this disaster..

I am puertorican and grew up in the island. Puerto Rico's infrastructure was a disaster before and after the storm. That includes water and electrical government run companies. Two problems in Puerto Rico. One repeal the Act Jones! Is killing the island and benefit a few naval transport companies. Two, declare federal marshal law to oust the corrupt Government. Restructure the local Government under Marshall Law into a smaller and more effective one from 78 towns with 78 majors to 78 towns in five regions with five majors. North, East, West, South, and San Juan. A new independent fiscal board need to be appointed to establish a plan and manage finances. Authorize deviation of FEMA funds to enable cheaper, newer, and more effective infrastructure for water and electricity. Register all the properties into a digital registry. Make it illegal to build a house without a registry. Employed locals to rebuilt the country. Re-establish the tax incentives to invest in the island to bring more enterprise back. Incentivize people to return by offering tax incentives to re-built and invest. Puerto Rico needs a comprehensive plan without politics! No local, US, or International politics. A simple plan and get to work. Puerto Rico is a save haven for highly skill people at a low cost and it should be promoted and rebuilt that way. Just my two cents. Do not, and I meant do not victimize Puerto Rico. Do not steal the dignity and honor of the Puertorican people.

I'm from PR and i live in the country/mountain side of Canovanas, I didn't get power in my house until March of 2018...so that's 9 months without power. 9 months of running with a generator, we spent thousands of dollars in gasoline to have it running all night. We also spent a lot of money buying ice for things like milk and cheese and all that perishable food that wasn't frozen.

RESPONSE TO AT. EX. Puerto Rico was COLONIZED by the US due to their natural and geographical resources. This did made PUERTO RICANS American Citizens, however, citizenship can also be an acquired status that was not necessarily present before, just like any immigrant that arrives to the US and gains citizenship. Puerto Rico have been colonized for centuries, however, it’s rich culture, unique beautiful people, art, infrastructure, and patriotism, PUERTO RICO IS INDEED AN ENTITY, COUNTRY, GLOBALLY RECOGNIZED BY ITS FLAG THAT REPRESENTS FREEDOM. Regardless of a paper that says you’re a citizen, Puerto Ricans are not Americans and very much do not feel like Americans. This American colonization has caused chaos in the island due to laws and regulations that have put their territory and land in jeopardy, allowing Americans to buy in the island TAX FREE. This allows the American rich to expel Puerto Ricans from their homes to build hotels, casinos, clubs, and hotels. This example, just like many other social catastrophes (Don’t forget electricity), have left the island isolated and exposed. This American citizenship is indeed present, but it comes as an irreparable cost. Of course there are many things the American Government has helped Puerto Rico with, but it doesn’t compared to the damaged it has cause. But this is not done yet. Imagine you’re sitting in your little cottage in Alabama and suddenly that little cottage of yours is completely destroyed. Now let’s say you lost all your ELECTRICITY, WATER, COMMUNICATION, SAFETY ENTITIES, MEDICAL CARE AND MEDS. Now this is the best part. The government closes Alabama up and says that they can’t get help because it’s “disturbing it’s budget.” Now imagine how this would impact the state, it’s people, the safety of the community, and literally every part of society. Now extend this for around eight months to one year. More than 3,000 PEOPLE DIED and the social and personal scars left on the survivors are going to be present forever. So please respect the Puerto Ricans that feel and are PUERTO RICANS, and that feel and sympathize with the damaged caused in their HOMELAND.

Ok so im currently living in Puerto Rico cuz like many others they dont hava a choice so, once the hurricane hit there were 3 very important needs food, water and fuel for generators and such water and fuel being the hardest to find. The community put their backs into it to clean up and try to rebuild at least in my home town in Toa Baja also in Bayamon and Dorado but some of the damage was too much we needed machineery in order to help clean some of the ruble in the streets, yet the mayors were only helping their employees while the people were left to die and rot many of us managed to survive, many try to vandalise, home invasions increased and no way of calling police or anyone for help

Only now, will people understand the value of the Cuban Revolution. Two sister islands, both battered by cyclone at about the same time...one, Cuba rises Phoenix like, it being an independent nation and not a US colony...while Puerto Rico unsuccessful in its attempts to gain independence...is in this desperate state as a US colony...as the US government lets it rot...while the vultures hover above it...waiting for easy pickings.

TheCatLover Lord that is strange! Why not? Do Puerto Ricans like being enslaved? Do they not have self pride and wish to determine who they are and their destiny? Most people have probably given up the fight and chosen the easier option...ie to leave for the US or elsewhere...and look at the mess that the country/ colony is in...look at the contempt with which Americans treat Puerto Ricans ...just wanting to snatch great parts of the country on the cheap...The people of the other wing of the bird have resisted the US and have paid a very high price for their resistance with the crippling embargo, numerous attempts at regime change and worse.

My wife works for a company (and with no disasters happening at the present time), that has opened a facility in Puerto Rico. Guess what? EVERY member on her team only shows up half the time and does the absolute minimal of tasks (if any). Those that are fired are replaced with others that continually do the same thing. Little and nothing. Puerto Rico’s issue seems to be work ethic and not outside support.

Comparing Puerto Rico to Cuba is ludicrous! In spite of all it's faults, the relationship with the US propelled the island to become [at one point] by far the strongest economy in Latin America. It's a matter of fine-tuning certain aspects of the status. The Jones Act, for example, is very unfair and it has to GO!

When a natural disaster happens in the U.S. the insurance of every property cover the damages. In Puerto Rico the situation is different, the majority of houses are not cover, basically the homeowners pay for the damages with their own money. The actual government doesn't have the budget to rebuild the entire country. It's pretty much bad luck.

I think they were helping, but bringing help is not that easy. It is not like it was before the storm. Roads are not clear, food is not available like it was two days before the storns. Electricity cant be restored in one day, or a week. Nothing is normal like it was. People will never understand that the storm was a disaster. During the disaster nothing is normal and everybody will suffer.

Puerto Rico has been a US Territory since the late 1890s after the Hispanic American War, when Spain gave the island to the United States. Also, Puerto Ricans have been U.S. Citizens and of U.S. Nationality since 1917 when the Jones Act was passed. We have served in every war since World War I, we can travel to the mainland or other U.S. territories and back to the island without the use of a passport, we can move to the U.S. or its territories without the use of a Green Card or Visa. We speak spanish and english (official languages) and we vote in the U.S. Presidential Primaries, but not in the U.S. Presidential Elections. We also sing the U.S. National Anthem, celebrate certain U.S. holidays and abide by certain U.S. laws, its government and the U.S. Constitution. All of this while at the same time having our own identity, culture, customs, traditions, laws, government, history, flag, anthem, nationality, citizenship, olympic team, constitution, holidays, etc.

I’m in Puerto Rico, funny how most of the people here talk bad about the US even tho US has poured so much money here, giving so many benefits, section 8 and more but when things like this happen they complain that US isn’t doing much. I think Puerto Rico should start appreciating US more. Recently i had a conversation with a young man here telling me “he isn’t American, Puerto Rico retrieves money and benefits from Puerto Rico but we aren’t American.” Even after I explained that he’s literally an American citizen he says “But I’m not American I’m Puerto Rican “

- Written by a Colombian lol.

Puerto Ricans felt their true country, the USA in the midst of a storm and pleaded for help. But during beauty pageants, Panamerican and Olympics Games they march separately under their own flag. Puerto Rico is NOT a sovereign country, it’s a US territory. It’s time to ditch the Puerto Rican flag and embrace the Star-Spangled Banner that represents the USA.
