Had a little set back with my S&W 327 2" exhibiting some cylinder erosion.
To read more on cylinder erosion check this site:
www.all4shooter...
S&W say: “Hi, the reason why we recommend you don't shoot .357 magnums under 120 grain in that gun is because the quick burning powder that is associated with the lighter grain bullets presents the possibility of eroding the face of the titanium cylinder. This only applies to the .357 magnum round, below 120 grain is fine for the .38 special”.
A reminder: READ YOUR MANUAL that came with your gun, no matter how mundane it may be!
Stay Safe and Check 360 Often!

What do you mean “where do I have to look?”… just don’t buy higher pressure rounds that specifically state that they are not to be used on lighter alloy pistols.

This is false. I have email correspondence from the POS owner himself who claims it would take thousands of rounds to erode the Ti Cylon my 340pd. According to him, because it will take thousands of rounds I must be more of a man than him. He also called me entitled. And swears I was not raised by a "strong" father. And finally told me to fuck off. I shot 15 rounds through my 340pd and had tremendous damage. I will never ever buy buffalo bore ever again, nor will I advocate anyone else buy it. What a fuckin asshole.

Interesting statistic regarding customer service: Customers who have an issue, and are handled with care and respect by the company, have a higher rate of satisfaction than consumers who never had an issue. Plus, they are more likely to do repeat business. Moral - Good customer service is worth its weight in gold. I'm glad S&W took care of you. I've always been a bit leery of these titanium cylinders. Please post an update after more firing. Hopefully, this is a one time thing.

I've worked a lot with titanium metal and I can tell you although it can be as strong as steel it is not as hard (abrasion resistant) as hardened steel. Erosion and abrasion is much easier with Ti.

For a carry gun, I like to have two or three on hand, set up identically. I verify reliability in them and then set one aside to carry, one to train with and - if I can afford it - one as a spare.

***** that's ideal for sure. I know of one "SWAT" team that get issued 2 identical custom built 1911s just for this purpose. If one goes down they have an identical to carry. Seamless transition.

Yes, I already read that particular article, and after reading, I sent my 327 pugnose to S&W. First off this gun was bought new but had a crack in the front barrel shroud by the dove tail front sight. The sight fell out, that's how I discovered the crack. Also asked for them to change the cylinder to a 627 stainless one. Waiting for it now.

precisionmarksman Thanks for the comment. 2 other guys sent me msg's saying they bought their 327 and one guy had a loose barrel shroud after the first range session and the other guy said his cylinder would stick and could not open 1/2 the time so he had to send it back. I actually wanted to change the front sight out but S&W told me they have not created any front sight for the 327 2". And there is nothing out there for it either. It was suggested I use laser grips!? I feel like if I have to change to a SS cylinder then S&W should owe me some money back! The reason I purchased this wheelie was specifically for the Ti properties. Let me know how it goes. I saw a used 327 2" last year at Cabela's that had an unfluted SS cylinder installed. Now I know why....

Glad you received a new cylinder from S&W, they have really good customer service.Funny you mention the Fed Ex deal, my wife's co-worker had to send his Glock back for repairs.They sent the same packing slip, but when he went to the Fex Ex facility they said they weren't sure if they could ship firearms, yet clearly he had the return slip.After three employees and a manager making sure the firearm was secure, which was demonstrated prior by the owner... they allowed it to go out.Two of the employees stood back wide eyed with their arms crossed.He said they were very nervous and wanted nothing to do with the process.The whole ordeal took about 25 mins.Honestly i wish i was there.Haha!

CWB1863 Yeah I am always impressed with their warranty service. It seems pretty consistent. However I've sent a many revolver back to them throughout these years so... I live near an actual FedEx Hub which is huge. I talked to a different rep there and he was telling me they have a section for S&W that is secured. It appears they are the hub for S&W shipments as he said there is a specific truck that leaves from their location for S&W everyday. But if you were to go to a stand alone FedEx shipping center I do not think they will ship firearms. I asked once and they told me I have to go to the actual Hub. But its funny how people get so nervous as if its a ticking bomb!

Yup, it's just the ignorance and uneducated people in our society.Off topic a bit, my best friends wife who is anti gun knows i carry a firearm.Mind you, we get along really well despite her being a so far left it's not even funny.That aside, she forbids i carry a firearm in her house which i respect completely.No issues with that at all, it's her house.I asked her one day in a general discussion.If i was a Police officer would it bother her if i carried a gun around, she said it wouldn't, it's part of their job.I responded... isn't part of my job to protect myself, my family and possibly you someday, god forbid some thing happens? I also mentioned to her, you've know me for 8 years, i'm responsible, we get along, our kids are friends etc.Why are you afraid of me carrying? Needless to say, she had no explanation and stopped the conversation and said "i just don't like guns".Yet, my buddy has two rifles he received from when his Father passed away in his closet.Oh and an AR15 he bought which she doesn't know about, that's another story altogether.Anyway, i tried to have a civil discussion and didn't get anywhere.A little rant, but i thought you'd appreciate it.

Sparking and blue haze denotes titanium cylinder erosion. The titanium has a finish applied. The finish is removed by lighter weight bullets at higher velocities.

I had trouble with S&W. I had to send an MP10 twice to them, I had a armorer look at it and they found that they put an AR 15 buffer and spring for an AR10. Their customer service was not that great for me. They actually forgot to send it to me and then they lost my iron site attached. They did not repair the outside of the firearm where the brass hit it and wore it down. GL.

I have a Taurus 617 Titanium purchased used with the same erosion. I sent it back to Taurus and they replaced the cylinder no charge but after 8 weeks. Its like a little 327 a 19 ounce 7 shot. Fits in a K frame holster and compares in size to a S&W model 66. Its a hair smaller. It may be an alternative to the higher priced 327. Worth a look if you can find one they stopped making them and now come only in steel.

On my S&W Air-weight I bought Houge grips {about 25 dollars at the time} for a larger grip when carrying on my hip but used the original when on my ankle. When I put the Houge's on it was like night and day. Much better feel and target hits at 10 yards. With the Houge I was able to get all three fingers around the grip unlike the come with grips. I have been looking at this revolver but after seeing a lot of Chamber erosion problems I am not 100% sure I want to get any revolver where the chamber melts away. There have been some talk of chamber failures.

Wow! What a bummer! My heart sank when I saw the title of your video as I just paid for a 327 2 days ago and waiting to pick it up next Monday (California 10-day waiting rule to buy a gun). I am glad S&W handled it well though but I will keep an eye out for that issue. The idea of putting a 627 cylinder suggested by another viewer is not a bad one but I wonder if this would not add too much weight to it. I have a 627 PC too and it is heavy. I love it but I could see how carrying it all day would be potentially too much.
@TheOl1911
@TheOl1911 9 жыл бұрын
Greg90731 I know...it sucked but 11 business days to get it back is not bad at all. BUT why did it happen? I never used any mags less than 120gr nor did I use any harsh cleaning on the cylinder so... I would highly suggest if you want to shoot magnums out of the 327 that you seek out the Gold Dot Short Barrel 135gr stuff. I've already put a handful through it since getting it back and no issues. Also its just much more practical. Recoil is manageable. The 135gr Critical Duty is punchy and I still see some sparks flying. The 125gr Critical Duty I think I might stay away from as a ton of sparks are generated with that round and its punchy. I'm going to experiment with the 130gr Hydra-Shok magnum to see how those work. So... I mean I bought this specifically for the Ti properties so changing to a SS cylinder I feel like S&W should owe me some money back you know? 627 PC is an awesome wheelie but its too heavy for daily carry. Occasional carry OK but I'm looking for something I will have on me for the majority of the time and the 327 fits the bill. Someone sent me a pic of the 327 with a blackened SS cylinder and it actually looked cool.

Regarding the 327 snub, the gun does not respond well to lightweight high velocity bullets. Kinda funny being as that is what 357mag is. The cylinder is titanium. Under heat and pressure titanium flame cuts. I use buffalo bore XPB barnes tactical load, but in a 140gr, not 125gr. No flame cutting. 1150fps from 2.5" pen 21.5, exp .60, vel 1150fps. Not far out of line with your Speer 135gr load, but the barnes has superior performance. The timing issues are not resolvable unless someone builds stronger timing hand parts. The lockup can slip due to heavy recoil. Heavier, slower bullets can control the problem. The titanium cylinder can also be replaced with a stainless cylinder. It does not flame cut and S&W will do this cost free upon request. I believe the SS cylinder does not add to much weight, but the extra weight may also help with lock up problems. I owned one before that had flame cutting resolved through SS cylinder swap. The gun had problems concerning that dumb-ass lock they put on the gun to block the hammer fall. Fixed that myself with a pug kit. I did not have any problems after the fix. Since then, I bought another one, but have left it stock. No problems, so far, using proper heavier ammo. A good gun for what it is, but it simply will come apart under full house loads and people just have to have those flamethrower 125gr 357s. S&W should start looking at going SS and going with parts that can withstand 357mag. And get rid of that idiot lock. I have no problems with my Ruger SP 101 ever. But it's not an 8shot pug. You are right, everyone seems to notice it and it draws a crowd at the range.

Just a heads up. I’ve been doing a lot of research since I’m getting one of these myself. Shooting 38 out of this gun is a no no. The length of the bullet is what creates the seal and prevents the corrosion. So 38s are way to short to make that seal.

Really enjoy watching your informative videos! The Pug Nose S&W 327 is very interesting, especially the 8 round capacity. I do appreciate the J-Frame size revolvers, but with .357 loads, I think it will be punishing. Back in the early 1990's I sent a 4" S&W K frame to a gunsmith (recommended by Massad Ayoob in Combat Magazine, can't remember who now) and had him convert it to a compact 6 round J-Frame size equivalent. The revolver came back with a bobbed hammer, but the action had a nice trigger staging for an almost single action cocking before firing if wanted. Was wondering who makes that kydex holster you had displayed in the middle. I appreciate the way kydex keeps its shape especially for re-holstering, but can't find anyone that makes kydex holsters for revolvers. Seems like the market is inclined only for the semi-autos. Your videos and my past experience makes me more confident in relying on a revolver for a close encounter (GET OFF ME) defensive situation. I would love to find a source for a custom kydex holster for my J-Frame size K frame. On another note, I recently ordered a S&W (Performance Center) MP R8 5" 8 round .357 revolver with built-in bottom rails for a bedside idiot-proof self-defense response weapon. The history of the design of this weapon is interesting. I believe an SWAT team wanted S&W to design a lighter N-Frame larger capacity .357 for the lead entry officer using the bulletproof shield. To protect and minimize hand/arm exposure the officer will hold his weapon close to the shield. What was happening to the lead officer's semi-auto was the cycling of the slide, it would hit the shield and cause a jam, hence the birth of this entry .357

+Hollywood Prepper Hey there, thanks for the comment! Now the kydex holster in the middle is made by Garrett Industries (Silent Thunder IWB). www.giholsters.com/silent-thunder-iwb-revolver/ This is an extremely popular question. I know I did a vid on it before. Its a decent IWB kydex holster (with leather lining). Check them out. They also do OWB revolver holsters. I know a buddy of mine that has a Raven Concealment for his 627 Pro Series (well it was mine). I believe that was a special order that took at least 2mo. OHHHHHHH u got the MP R8!!!!! That is my next wheelie my friend! Maybe in April! Yes I actually spoke with a LEO that stated they had tested the MPR8 and used Critical Duty 135gr. The idea was scraped and they went back to the 1911 (Nighthawk GRP Recon). I believe it was originally designed for LAPD but it appears no one is using it in that fashion at this time. Please let me know when you get it!

+TheOl1911 I got my S&W M&P R8, took it out to the range, it's a dream to shoot. It felt light for an N Frame (because of the scandium alloy frame), but still enough weight at 36 oz. to make the Hornady Critical Defense .357 - 125 grain feel like .38's just with a little more muzzle flash. The single action is so smooth, the double action is a little heavy (feeling like a 10-12 lb pull). At 30 feet, I was able to keep all shots within the center ring (single action), better than with my Glock 30SF and my Glock 26. Maybe after another 500 rounds it will get smoother. I tried some Crimson Trace laser grips on it. I thought for a bedside defensive gun, a laser would help my groggy eyes until I can focus better on the target. Unfortunately, even with the mild recoil and muzzle lift, it would shift the grips back a 1/32" and then the next sighting with the laser was off about 3+" to the lower right. The crimson trace grips has two mounting screws but there is no positive positioning to the frame so with any recoil or even hand-flexing of the grip, it will shift ever so slightly hence making the laser sights unreliable. Crimson Trace is sending me a new set of grips in exchange and see if they're any better. In the meantime since the S&W M&P R8 has a bottom rail, I mounted a Streamlight TLR-2 HL G (a 700 lumen light with green laser - sweet!!). I know once you get yours, you'll love it and I be happy to read all your reviews.

***** The 327 that you carry is a pretty cool gun, but you just discovered why I will never buy another Titanium/scandium revolver, in another comment on 1 of your other vids I said I had a 360pd, well that gun has been back to Smith and Wesson twice for a new cylinder because of the erosion problem, and it started to show it again after not all that many rounds---so my permanent fix was to have a gun smith fit it with a model 60 cylinder, not truely a model 360 anymore I guess but my erosion problems are gone--my guess you could do the same thing using a 627 cylinder if it continues to be an issue-- and would only weigh a couple ounces more---also keep an eye on the gas ring at the front of the crane/cylinder area for flame cutting and the shield on the top strap.

RugerShooter Hey man just saw your post, and big coincidence I just got back from shooting my brand new to me model 19-2 k frame of about 1962-1963 era, got it from my uncle that wanted a 3 inch sp101 I had, let me say that Smith and wesson Is a freakin tack driver, I put just about 130 rounds through it ranging from total wimp 38 loads clear up to my hot handloads through, all in bullets weights from 125-158grains, and loaded with various different powders, and that thing did not shoot a single group larger than what you could cover with a 50 cent piece, at about the 20-25 yard mark and that was firing most all of those rounds at the same bulls eye so about 80 and cover the with just very slight larger than that 50 cent piece, and the only 3 or 4 shots that would not be covered were my fault and I knew it when the trigger broke, some of the shots (about 4 or 5 cylinders worth were double action), then I started just shooting random pop cans at various distances of up to damn near 100 yards and I don't think I missed once, all of hand sitting in a chair though because my back is kinda screwed up right now, but holy crap that smith could very well be the best shooting gun I have ever fired in my nearly 40 years of shooting, not really bragging on me or the gun (but hell I will take it lol), just saying that it is hard to dispute that the older guns in general (smiths especialy)just really outclass the newer stuff as far as hand built care and what it means to the end product, even putting rumors aside about things like the 19's being weak or whatever sure you may not want to feed them tons of the really hot stuff, but who wants to really do that anyhow, but fed moderately loaded or light loaded rounds for the better part of practice and plinking they will last onger than most guys will live, God knows I will NEVER part with my new found beauty. take care my friend.

Augest West It has entirely to do with the gun. The lighter grain ammo in .357 typically uses a fast burning powder which can flame cut the titanium. So for the sake of not ruining the gun, you're not supposed to shoot less than 125gr ammo

Thank you...I saw that on the site also...I thought about it and it makes perfect sense...Burnoff. However even at my age..Old,HA.. I want a small or med frame rev. to carry. I think I will stick with full steel until they get this figured out, Hell how long have we had titanium chambers compared to steel? 1500 years or more? I had the S&W Airweight in 38+p but had to sell it and a lot of firearms due to economy problems...I still have all the holsters and want to fill them up again ya know. What really hurt was letting my MINI 14 go...Owch. Thanks again.

Augest West well you can still carry something lightweight with the scandium frame, just pick one with the stainless steel cylinder instead of titanium. for example, instead of a 340PD, choose the 340M&P which is only like 1.5oz heavier. but still lighter than a 442/642 and capable of .357.

Tracy Chan It appears to be quite a few as a lot of guys sent me emails about their cylinder on their Ti cylinder had also eroded. These are the size I want but the checkering bites me and sticks to my clothing. Also under recoil they get loose.

fire1777 Yes I would get the 340 M&P for sure. I have the "PD" version only because it was sorta given to me. If I had my choice I would get the 340 M&P back. I have not heard of any flame cutting issues with the 340 M&P. I don't suspect you will want to feed it a steady diet of 357mag anyway. The only issue I had with the 340 M&P was the cylinder would jump the stop. I looked at others at the shop and there was no way the cylinder could jump the stop so I tried to get S&W to replace it but they would not. So I gave up on it and sold it to an "80's guy", hahahaha. He in turn later sold it. I know a few cops that use the 340 M&P as a back up gun in the pocket and off-duty gun. Check out ***** channel as they just did a vid on it here: kzbin.info/www/bejne/gaq8iayebcaed8k And I had a few vids on it a few years ago...

+Augest West Well, I have done a lot more research since this post which was only two days ago...So I found one guy that was flipping out about the two Tauruses he had bought....After seeing what he was going through I am off Taurus. He got two revolvers at a show instead of the ruger and Colt he wanted...Cost was a big issue but once he got them to the range the 44 had about 50 through it and the chamber fell open during live fire! The lock was stuck open and backwards. The 357 was locking up, A timing problem BUT TWO REVOLVERS?? As I listened to this again I was not surprised that the box didn't ship same day. I BET THEY CALLED THE COPS, ATF AND HAD THIS GENT RUN THROUGH THE SYSTEM! Nics you know, His name, adress, when he takes a crap.
