Yes, but there is a limit to what's best for the horse. As usual, man looks to do what only pleasures him. And yes, the horses are mostly taken care of, but jumping that high is very hard on their joints. And they will probably pay for it later in life. There's a reason wild horses don't jump over something unless they have to. Just common sense.

aw this post is from 2 years ago. could your horse have pain issues? some appaloosas are great jumpers. I once had the most amazing little white appaloosa of Navaho Britches Thunder (thoroughbred and foundation bloodlines) That brave little 14.3 indian pony I swear could jump almost anything and often jumped from a standstill (And this in his early 20s) a trick so he could get out and make mischief around my neighborhood as he literaly almost had the intelligence of Mr Ed lol There was never a corral that could hold him, to my neighbors dismay lol He would wow crowds at shows, especialy times when he would run up to a jump stop and you think its a refusal and he would pop over it. He seemed to love to jump just for the sake of it. I'm surprised he wasn't born with wings. Well he's got his wings now in heaven my little pegasus.

@@Shewolfen dang, love that we don't get notifications anymore! But no, she's constantly checked by the chiropractor and vet, so she shouldn't have any pain! She's a western pleasure pony and just really lazy haha! Over the past couple years we have grown together, I'm 16 now, and she's kind of old, 15, so we've popped over some little cross rails and cavalettes or however you spell it! But we like her calm, cool and collected since she's both lazy and a great lesson horse :)

Verniixxx A 17 hand thoroughbred is a rarity with most thoroughbreds being from 15.2 to 16.2hh. Most riders jump warmblood horses, bred specifically for jumping and some of them reach 17hh but by no means all of them.

Just so everyone knows, these are animals bred to do this. They get back treatments, have a multiple vets on standby. These are animals that have electro-magnetic treatment blankets and wraps that are out on them after they are ridden. Not to mention these horses are well priced over 500k so their owners are not going to risk them getting hurt. If they didnt want to jump these jumps, they can just stop. We cannot jump them if they are not willing. I have worked on the show circuit exorcizing AA circuit Grand Prix jumpers and they get luxury treatment. You cannot comment and say things like "this is cruelty!" When you have never ridden a horse in the AA horse circuit. If you do not know what a Grand Prix horse is or the AA horse circuit is then just go away.

I am sorry, but neither you nor those riders in the video truly understand the nature of a horse. The horse is not asking for an electric-magnetic treatment and this other stuff you are referring to. It is asking for kindness, love and safety. And this is everything but. They are using the horses for their own interest and no the horses don't have a choice. I do agree that some horses like to jump,but neither these heights nor in a competition. They are forced to do that, because they managed lower jumps so well. Humans never know when its enough and you can clearly see the selfishness in this vid. They are pulling on the reins like crazy. Most of the horse have their mouth open in pain, not to mention the practices that go on behind the scenes. I am sorry, but this has nothing to do with knowledge about the Grand Prix etc., it is just about knowing what any living being is seeking for. Not being harmed.

When I was younger I dreamed of doing this, now I'm older and understand I realize how wrong this is. My dreams of riding in these events have turned into owning a small farm with a couple horses and riding for fun and small local country shows. No part of this is for the horse, it's all for the rider. I agree with you. I also kept flinching seeing those horses mouths. Sometimes I want to put a bit in peoples mouths and pull on in like they do with their horse. And please people, don't give me the 'it's not the bit and it's the hands' crap. It's metal. In a living creatures mouth. With straps so it can't get rid of it. I wish shows like this allowed riders to go bitless. There are people who can control their horse without a crap piece of metal causing pain.

It also is a much more convenient way to help the horse set himself up for his own jump. Those riders know what they're doing. Behind the scenes most competitive jumpers are upbeat playful horses that love their riders. Why would they even look another human in the eye if they're being treated as badly as you make it sound. If a horse is treated badly, it shows. They are bitter, biting, kicking fiends compared to energetic lovers that just want to sit with you all day and nibble your fingers or rub their heads against you. Stop pretending to know what a horses "true nature is" because, although even I can never be certain of this, their one true desire is to survive. Survival of the fittest and a sense of impending danger rushes underneath the skin of the universe and I am certain that being loved and cared for is a little lower on the priority list than not knowing. And honestly if you find a specimen that is a counter example of that then it's probably not gonna live for long anyways.

This horse was sold by my partner to the US about 1 and a half year ago. Oliver Edgecombe rode him in the New Zealand World Cup Legaue and won it quailifing them for the World Cup Final in Sweeden. Great to see that McLain Ward has him now.

I don't think anyone can comment weather horses 'enjoy' this or not because it's very difficult to tell if a horse is enjoying something or not just from a low quality video. You need to be actually on the horse or at least there in person. I've ridden some horses who really can't be arsed with jumping and some who are even scared of it, while others love it so much they start galloping as soon as I point them at a pole on the ground. Any anyway, these horses are very well trained and probably have more spent on making sure they're ready and fit to do this than the average child does throughout their childhood.

I've fallen more times than i can count. If the horse wants to jump, it will jump. No cruelty what so ever. A horse was made to be ridden, jumped, raced and to be hard workers. This is the most dangerous sport. Especially jumping this high. I fell off of my horse when jumping a small jump, and imagine this one. I got really hurt, and it actually was a cars fault. My horse got spooked by the noise, and the car had no idea where it was going, so it got in the arena. Ugh people these days. I owned tht stable btw ( I am rebuilding a few things ) u can come. If anyone wants to come to my stable, I will give u the address, and if u are close by and looking for a place to ride, this is the place. My stable is beautiful and we do many things. :) a lot of money tho

Those walls generally aren't solid, and will fall apart on impact. I'm not sure with these ones because this is a small screen and the video isn't great quality, but olympic riders generally wont jump their horses on immovable objects. It would most likely be made of foam blocks that are slotted together, which wont hurt the horse or rider.

I don't think this is cruelty.. A horse weighs what, 10 times the size of us. They are absolutely capable of not cooperating.... But guess what, they do! I'm not saying if they had arms and legs they would let you put the bit in there mouths, or attach the martingale on they're girth and bridle.. But a horse could easily run off to who knows where. But they let us accomplish amazing things, because they love this sport as much as us equestrians....

The heights sometimes get ridiculous but if the horse didn't want to jump then it wouldn't jump. You saw with the last horse that ran out instead of jumping. It wasn't forced over the wall and it made it's own choice. If the horse was uncomfortable with the wall and with the rider then they would simply refuse the wall or buck their rider off, no amount of kicking or whipping is going to make them do something that they don't want to do. They obviously enjoy jumping and performing in front of a crowd like most horses do.

The half halt is used in front of a jump because excessive speed causes the horse to loose elevation, the term is "looses roundness". It also helps the rider position the horses hind legs (the springs) at the best possible take off position. Speed is of value at a low wide jump. Make sense, no? These are some awesome jumps.

I've had the pleasure of sole charge of Vancouver, he's an incredible creature. Usually a horse that kicks his hind legs after a jump can lead to down rails, but one puissance he knocked the rolltop with his front end and kicked it back up with his hind, making him the winner. It was hilarious.

@Horseloversrox When a horse is collected, it's head it brought back under to it is vertical to the ground, or close to. This forces the horse to use it's back end as its powerhouse, instead of it using it's not-as-powerful front legs. For jumpers, horses are allowed to raise their heads right before they jump, because if they don't they don't get a proper look at the jump and most often wont jump it.

This looks like a very happy, willing, and well taken care of horse to me. A horse that is in pain wouldn't jump 7 ft for his/her rider. If you dont ride with a bit what do you ride with? Halter? Bitless bridle? What do you do with your horse? Trail riding? Im not saying its impossible but Ive never seen anyone jump this high in a competition without a bit. I can ride my horse all day at home and trail ride in just a rope halter but in a show ring with 5000 people watching... different story.

Basically horses are at their absolute nature when they are running. This is what they are created for. And it is written in their DNA to run, jump, bounce, and even dance!. They just love it. However, it is easily noticeable that horses are afraid. But they are afraid of the "Audience" not the barriers they jump over. Walls and barriers look scary for us and we mistake them for real ones. Nevertheless they are made of fluffy light-weight materials. So the tension that horses experiences is merely a result of the huge number of spectators and the atmosphere of the ring. Not the walls themselves.

For the people saying those horses look uncomfortable Well yes some do, but remember if a horse doesn't want to, they won't do it. But also remember that if the horse hits the jump, the obstacle falls down. In Cross Country Eventing, The jumps won't fall if the horse hits it, that sport is known as most dangerous. You will also see many horses denying the jump, because they know it's unsafe and they are afraid. If the horse hits the jump here, the jump comes down.. it's 95% more safer than cross country Ofcourse accidents can happen everywhere, but if these horses didn't want to, they wouldn't do it. l'm a horse rider myself for 17 years..

You are right Eva Robinson. The arguing is pointless. Horses will be mistreated as long as people need to be entertained and other humans can make a buck from it. Horses can't be bred to be abused. They may take it better than other horses and if they are a good athlete may do what is asked to avoid the pain and figure out quickly if they do what is asked no spur in their rib, or at least not as hard. They don't realize the pain down the road they will experience.

A lot of you guys are complaining about "how tight the reins are" they are holding them back A. so they don't go into an uncontrolled hand gallop and B. so the horse does not ram through the wall if it decides not to jump. I have had many experiences with my horse that got uncontrolled and I had to pull my self up back from it's neck these horses are fine and very well at jumping, this is what they are trained to do.

Skyler Shaw Can't enjoy watching when the horses are trying to free their noses for the jump and for the landing. Martingales/tiedowns are showbiz, not horsemanship. Same thing with the jawbreakers- as we used to call those bits.

Yes it's a common term that simply means getting the horse back under control and focused on the rider and the task at hand. Sometimes riders will slow their horse down and travel in a circle in order to collect them.

@JackAndArora I wondered about that as well before reading the comments below. I also wondered why David didn't try harder to collect his horse at the very end. I have great respect for these riders, but he seemed to be putting himself and his horse in danger. I heard the "hoahs"s, but after he pissed off his horse at 6:25, he should have known to try and collect. please correct me if i am wrong.

sometimes if the horse is going to fast the rider will do a "half halt" to slow the horse because if a hose is going to fast towards a jump it will either refuse, run through or jump it with length and not height most likely knocking the rail.

they have to! horses feed off our energy and give their own theses horses sre strong, brave horses ready to jump whatever you put on front of them they are holding the reins tight in order to control the horse... otherwise all you would see in this video is a horse and rider careening around the arena at a dangerously fast pace for both

its kind of like when a dog is worked up on a leash. they pull and pull and dang near choke themselves, but in the long run, its safer for all parties if he stays on the leash. you would never let go in that situation, and their is quite a lot less personal risk then

To the people who were saying that the horses are forced to jump: horses are 1500+lbs animals! they are 3 times our size (not height, size) and are build of muscle. If a horse didn't want to jump, they could SOOOOO easily dump their rider, refuse, or knock down the jump. But they don't! They jump. You can tell by the way they look at the jumps and speed up that they want to jump high.
