The demonstration makes it a lot easier than it is, obviously the driver is experienced, but for a learner taking the test this is quite a challenge especially when reversing about 2 car lengths as slight steering movement can potentially hit the kerb rather easily. I personally suggest any learner should concentrate this manuover as this is the most tricky and requires total control. Good luck every one in passing your test! Did mine in 2006 but continue to learn as it benefits me still, another great video. Thanks!

100% - I really wish people who uploaded these videos made sure that their content was accurate first. I see you advise to stop when carrying out the manoeuvre if traffic approaches from behind on the left hand side of the road. Should you also stop if traffic approaches in front on you on the side you have pulled over to (the right hand side of the road)?
@anthonydoyle90632 жыл бұрын
The reason I ask is that my daughter was failed on this today. She stopped on the reverse each time traffic approached to wait for the traffic to clear. There was a traffic on the road so it took a long time to complete the manoeuvre. The assessor stated that she should not have kept stopping which went against the way she had been taught by her instructor. She's now very confused on how to complete this should she get it again in a test. It's worth noting she's had this on two tests prior and she's completed it in the same way each time. There didn't seem to be an issue on the first two tests. Very confusing.

We have always thought that it is safer to stop for any approaching traffic, as we are creating a hazardous situation. Perhaps that examiner thought that the road was wide enough that there was no need to stop. It does sound like a very harsh decision!

Hi, so I've failed for a similar thing before so I wanted to check: when you say stop the manoeuvre if anything is coming towards you does that mean in both directions, and as soon as you see it? Thanks

I remember there was many complaints from driving instructors to the DVSA when this manoeuvre was introduced in 2017 as we had always advised against parking on the wrong side of the road. However we had to teach it anyway to ensure our pupils were ready for their test. Thankfully most lessons and tests are done in daytime so that rule should not be broken normally.
@limi35715 жыл бұрын
Whilst this video is quite a good illustration as to how to do this manoeuvre. No mention is made of rule 248 "You MUST NOT park on a road at night facing against the direction of the traffic flow unless in a recognized parking space. Laws CUR reg 101 & RVLR reg 24". I know an overall "make sure it is safe and legal statement is made", but as soon as the street lights go on this manoeuvre is technically illegal. So not sure how you teach it during the winter months. Also, due to the incredible brightness of all new cars, i think this manoeuvre should be very strongly discouraged if not banned, purely because the "parker" as they pullout have virtually no choice but to blind oncoming vehicles. I believe this manoeuvre should only be done in the most exceptional cases. I appreciate that as instructors / examiners you are following the test criteria, but seriously, this needs to be challenged. What next, teaching people how to go through red lights safely? Just because a huge number of drivers do....

When reversing back in the video the guy did not look back through the back window? So can we use the rear view mirror to look back and side mirror on the test to keep align to the kerb? Been told to look back through the back window or be fail? Thanks
@AdvanceDrivingSchool6 ай бұрын
We should look all around the car for danger - including through the rear window. Sorry we didn’t show that more clearly.

At 4.42 the driver takes his right hand up passed 12 o'clock, is this allowed?
@AdvanceDrivingSchool4 ай бұрын
Of course - as long as you have full control over the car you can hold or turn the steering wheel however you prefer. Here is a video about it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/ipSnl2Vqnqh5mJY 👍🏼

I have one question while pull up on left or right and car is stopped, should we need to On hazard /parking lights? Or only Left or Right signal is enough? Thanks in advance.
@AdvanceDrivingSchool2 жыл бұрын
Once we have stopped we should cancel our indicators, so that we don’t distract others. We would not use our hazard lights for the same reason.

There is no substitute for lots and lots of driving practice. Over time you should notice that everything gets slightly easier, until you are able to drive on your own without getting stressed. Good luck!

Hi, I've never been told to look behind me at the back window when reversing. I always look in the mirror and check around me. Is this wrong?
@AdvanceDrivingSchool6 жыл бұрын
We recommend looking through the rear window when reversing, but if you can use the other windows and the mirrors well then you should be able to spot any danger. Just imagine parking in a busy car park - just look wherever you need to so that there is no chance of hitting something behind you!

What if the right hand side has double yellow lines? Is it still OK to do the maneuver?
@AdvanceDrivingSchool4 жыл бұрын
We would avoid stopping on double yellow lines during the driving test.

Hi what gear would you pull over with or do you freewheel over
@AdvanceDrivingSchool2 жыл бұрын
Just pull over in your current gear normally. As long as you push the clutch down before the engine goes under 1000rpm it can’t stall. 👍🏼

Do you have to look over both shoulders whilst reversing
@AdvanceDrivingSchool5 жыл бұрын
When manoeuvring we will need to look over both shoulders if we are to be aware of what is all around our car - and react if needed.

Is it compulsory to keep looking rear window in reversing two car’s length?
@AdvanceDrivingSchool2 жыл бұрын
You need to keep looking all around your car for danger, not only behind you.

How can we tell if we reverse two can length?
@AdvanceDrivingSchool4 жыл бұрын
Just guess. If we go a little too far the examiner will tell us we've gone far enough.

Hi, my ADI has told me the right signal MUST be on whilst carrying out this manoeuvre but I can't find anything confirming this ? Is this correct ? Thanks
@AdvanceDrivingSchool3 жыл бұрын
We would indicate when pulling over, but cancel the signal before reversing. Just signal whenever you think it would help others understand what we are doing. 👍🏼
@birdingnorthdevon3 жыл бұрын
@@AdvanceDrivingSchool Thanks for your reply. That's what I would do but it was made clear that it must be on for the whole manoeuvre ?
@AdvanceDrivingSchool3 жыл бұрын
That’s not how we teach the manoeuvre. Perhaps ask them why they think it should be done like this?

Stupid question but say I'm driving along with traffic behind and am asked to do this manoeuvre. Do I stop in the middle of the road (as though turning down a side road), which may slow or stop traffic behind? Or do I just not do it at all unless it's clear? I was taught that anything that may alter another driver's direction or speed is bad.
@AdvanceDrivingSchool7 жыл бұрын
Stop as if turning right, and it’s ok if following traffic has to wait in this situation 👍🏼

What a crappy thing given by DVSA, seems almost useless. I would always park on the left side.

Agreed - it’s always better to park on the left. 👍🏼

How we know we done 2 car length
@AdvanceDrivingSchool3 жыл бұрын
There is no need to be accurate - we look what we are next to before reversing, and then estimate from there. 👍🏼
@jasmine60633 жыл бұрын
How do you judge two car lengths?
@AdvanceDrivingSchool3 жыл бұрын
It only needs to be approximate - we look at what we are stopped next to (hedge, gate etc) and then estimate our distance from that. 👍🏼
