He knew I was new on the road and nervous as heck, but it was all in my attitude and how I respected his authority. I didn't get stopped again for another 14 years. That time was like a cavity search at the weigh station coming into Florida on I-10 from Alabama. But still, no Level 1 or anything. But it pays to have everything right and tight!

DOT officers are pretty cool around these parts as long as you show them some courtesy like you did. You absolutely done everything correctly. Great job! Also you might not know this, but Laurel County (Corbin) is home to the very first KFC. It’s where Colonel Sanders got his start with his famous chicken. They actually have a great museum with a restaurant. No truck parking, but could always get a taxi from a truck stop to check it out. Highly recommend seeing it sometime. Also the BP truck stop at exit #41 off of I75 has some of the best home cooking you could ever ask for.

Your point about the interior light is such common sense, but it's amazing how often people don't think about it. I taught a few young family members how to drive, and that was literally a day 1 discussion on what to do if you get pulled over even at dusk. In addition to that, I've taught more folks than I can count how to shoot a firearm, and most plan to get a license to carry. This is also a day one suggestion as most states when they run you're plate, cops are going to know if owners got a license to carry, etc.

I used to work for a restaurant and corp would stop by and inspect us. This grade was usually lower than the city inspectors as it was more than safety, but compliance to the company brand. This score tended to reflect how nice we treated the inspector. Since we lost points from 100 for every issue, I knew he could find 100 issues that were not exact to give us a zero. I usually got in the 95 range. One lunch I was slammed and behind, so much so, the inspector actually had to help out. I think I got an 88. As he walked in, I gave him a full rundown of the situation. My boss, on the other hand, likes to argue with him, and he usually got in the 70's. Inspectors are doing their job. Treat them with the same respect as you would anyone else, and you will generally do fine. Be abrasive on confrontational and he WILL find something wrong.
