I ran flatbed out of Port Canaveral for years. Running salt and lumber to Home depots, Lowes, etc etc. Had my own Teledyne forklift. Never had to wait to get unloaded if they were busy. Loved it.

Flatbed is the way to go!!! Most places you deliver are open 8am-6pm so you start early and you can park early. No distribution center games or waiting for a dock, they unload you with a forklift and youre off to grab another load. You can run harder, make more $$, and a lot less bs with flatbed!!

I pull a pneumatic and make frequent deliveries of limestone to a company that manufactures building materials and ships them on flatbeds. I can often get in, unload, and be gone before the flat bed that pulled in behind me has finished tarping.

If it was that easy everyone would do it. You leave out load securement and tarping in all extreme weather conditions. Extreme cold, high winds and extreme heat. I make close to 6 figures pulling dry van why would I want to do more work? While your out there busting up a sweat I'm already down the road over 100 miles while your still securing your load.

Don't get dollar signs in your eyes on switching trailers and commodities. Trucking is and always will be a fickle business. Specialized is not only hard work in all kinds of weather tarping, waiting on riggers, etc., etc., it also requires a lot more dollars output in gear and much harder to get home to that young family.

When O/O have not discipline and have not clue on how the trucking industry fluctuates, that is when the problem starts. All of us , who are in this industry , knows exactly what’s up at this time of the year , but most of us don’t want to preparé for these months we are not disciplined with our money , so we think changing equipment will solve our problem. No it will not solve the problem. Less money is not the problem, it is our own irresponsibility. I parked my truck for more than a month. I parked since February 28. I refused to haul cheap load , but I saved some money so I can survive these times of the year . Brokers are not the problem . We are the problem .

One piece of advice when installing a dishwasher. Before the drainpipe goes into the garbage disposal run the line to the top of the cabinet and secure it with a clip. This keeps the pressure of the dirty sink water from back flowing into the dishwasher. This is a common failure on home inspection reports. Yes one dishwashers have backflip preventives but do you want to trust a 10c part or a 10c clip. Good luck.

Great video, Justin. That was the first truck wash I went through when I drove for TMC. I thought it was funny that you were behind a TMC truck. Good content and advice for new drivers in the Loves lot. It can be stressful backing when trucks start piling up behind you when your trainer is trying to figure out how to tell you to back. Like you said, stay calm and it's your CDL, no one else, and it's your responsibility to protect it. Great drone footage too.

when I was an owner operator I only hauled acid or flatbed with structural steel that didn't have to be tarped. I didn't have to do anything but drive, the techs at the refinery would load the acid, the techs at the copper mine would unload and the crains took the steel after I took the chains off. Once my "buddy" got us a run for a moving company and I got a dose of way too much work for an old guy like me.

If freight rates get too high in any division businesses stop shipping, they can't all pass on the extra costs, some will even go broke. At the end of the day if you do it better than the rest and have a lower cost per mile than them, you'll stay in business. These peaks and troughs just show that when rates are good you have to stay out and work hard, then you can go to the house in the slow times.

Definitely consider tanker. Up here in Ontario Canada, the company I worked for did power only loads - liquid asphalt in the summer and propane in the winter. We were only loaded one way - most places, not much waiting but anything over 1 1/4 hours the company charged demuge (detention). Drivers could make into 6 figures plus benefits package - were paid hourly. I'm now retired

If your cool with strapping then it’s a serious cake walk. I’m a % driver and only work 4 days a week but I still bring the company 15-20k a week. It’s so Easy and people absolutely appreciate you more. Longest I’ve had to wait is an hour but gave me time to enjoy a solid lunch, I have only changed a few times in the last couple years. I made 450 bucks off 1 12.5k lb forklift, can’t get eaiser than that.

it probably wouldn't hurt to look into one of those breakaway flatbeds just to have it. You can often get them used at auction for much less than a box trailer. If you have it.. you can use it. And I know a bunch of construction crews who ship equipment using them (some of them in your area)... so certainly something to think about.

It was good to have it so you could watch yourself back around the building.🥰 Having your rig PAID OFF makes a BIG difference! It’s always good to get paid for your miles & then get home, but if you’re driving up to 200 miles to get home…we’ll, there is a balance there somewhere. At least you get to put a dishwasher in. I’ve done that one before. Always good to spend time with the family! Being in the SPECIALIZED area would get you some different loads, but might also place you away from home longer, etc. It all will work out….prayer helps! 🥰🙏✌️

Get set up on some seasonal and/or dedicated hauls... Everything from hazmat to grains to construction materials, mining concentrate, cinders, salt.....etc......One guy I worked for opened his own decorative rock yard and also hauled loads for his suppliers on the side while his wife ran the yard and a couple of employees delivered local loads..Try to get closer to the load source than dealing with brokers because they are in the business of eating your lunch...

If you're thinking flat bed consider doing LTL loads. You load what ever needs to be moved only you have several different drops on your trailer to make a full load.. It's a little time consuming putting a full load together but the payoff is BIG!! If you had you're own flat you could go back and forth between that and your covered wagon when you find good paying loads!

Justin, You made that backup look easy with only one pull forward. We don't count sliding tandems. It's good when things run smoothly. From some other KZbin videos plus a personal one assisting a driver making a delivery to where I worked, I would advise against it. There’s requirements for spacing between anchor points when hauling equipment, special anchorage points on the equipment, and should you haul steel or pipe you’d better have a headache rack so it doesn’t slide into the cab and you get impaled. You’d be out in all kinds of weather in the rain and snow so there’s a higher risk of slipping off the deck causing injuries. When I helped a driver pull tarps we were inside a building out of the weather and I was still sweating helping fold the tarps. I knew a driver running tankers and he mentioned driving smoothly was a must since when stopping at an intersection the liquid sloshing to the front could knock you into the middle of the intersection. There’s also a consideration for going up and down hills. To me the benefits don’t offset the potential for sitting at home recovering from injuries where you can’t even play with your kids. As a forklift operator I worked for a fairly large manufacturer at one point and we never had that many dropped loads. Ours were almost exclusively live unloads, especially when it was an owner operator. Maybe you should try making a live unload a condition of transport so your trailer is always under your supervision.

You could haul equipment they also come with winches so you could winch equipment on. With that trailer and the dry van you have, you could haul anything but refer loads.

This one is easy and I don't know how there is even a debate about this for you. For one, you are already getting better pay for your loads than many others in the industry. Not that they are the only one and I'm sure they get some good paying loads as well but I just watched a video from SouthGeorgiaHotshot uploaded within the last few days and he talks about only getting about $2.50 per mile for their load AND he has to spend time tarping his loads (sometimes) and securing his loads. And then, he has to unsecure them and take the tarps off and fold or roll his tarps up nice and that takes a lot of time loading and unloading. With your loads, you don't have to piss around with that at all really. You simply drop trailer and come back and pick it up and go or you wait while they load and go. About the only amount of "work" you're doing is opening and closing the doors and putting your seal on the door when the load is loaded and checking in and doing some paperwork. I don't know why you would even consider doing something else especially when the money doesn't seem to be any better. And in actuality, I think the money may be worse. At least for "general cargo". Now, for "specialized" cargo like you mentioned, you probably "can" get better money. That is likely true. But, the problem may be finding those loads. Unless you know of companies that require your type of services, you have to find those loads. And specialty loads can be few and far between. And again, you would likely have to spend time loading, arranging the load, securing the load, possibly tarping the load, and then unsecuring the load and all the other stuff I mentioned eariler. Again, WAAAAAYYYYYYYYYYY more "work" than what you're doing now. That's NOT TO SAY/SUGGEST that you can't handle that type of work. I'm sure you can. But do you really want to put yourself through all that nonsense for the same or maybe even less money? Why would you do that? I guess if you want to try something different just to do something different, then that's something. But other than that, I don't know why you do it. You're more than obviously doing quite well. You've got a really nice house in a really nice neighborhood with nice furniture and appliances and "stuff" in the garage. You have more than enough nice vehicles you own and drive. You have a nice Cadillac Escalade, a Dodge Hellcat, a Chevy pickup that's built pretty well, a Trans Am project car in the backyard, you've got ATV or UTV vehicles (I think you have more than 1 but maybe I'm wrong), you own your own trailer and semi truck, and I'm sure you have many other things that we don't even know about. You're doing quite well. Really well. And this is all based on you doing very minimal work from the "work" perspective on your part. No offense, but you know that for the most part you are "just driving". (Maybe that should be your new channel name :-) ) Sure, we can get into all the "other stuff" that you have to deal with as far as the stress of dealing with ding dong drivers out on the road (I'll get to that in your other video in a minute) so of course you have to worry about idiots running into you or not looking or cutting you off. Of course there are things that you have to consider. But as far as the "work" portion, you really don't have any to speak of. You don't have to do the work that many other people do for "general cargo" so you've got it pretty simple. And you're probably getting paid better rates than many of them are. Why change a good thing? Obviously, you do you so you're gonna do whatever you feel. You mentioned something about selling the truck and trailer but just stop that talk. You would be a fool to do that and have to start over with finding a decent truck and used trailer again. Sure, you "could" probably do it but why? I guess if you want to flip your truck and trailer and make money, then go for it if you're happy doing that. But, don't act like you're not making really good money EVEN IF the rates are "down" in comparison to 1 month or 1 year ago. It's not like you're getting $3.00 or $2.50 per mile or worse like some people. You know your operating costs and what you need to pay for your expenses but also pay yourself to take care of your bills AND HAVE money left over to go towards buying another truck in the future. Maybe it's $2.50 per mile. Maybe it's $2.75 or possibly $3.00. And this might be with paying yourself a pretty comfortable salary to pay for the nice home, cars, UTV vehicles, the wife to be able to stay at home with the kids (I'm not sure if she does other things as well??) and so on. Heck, if you really had to "squeeze" to make things work, you could probably even go down to $2.00 per mile if you wanted to. Since your truck and trailer are paid for and you do your own maintenance (you do your own maintenance don't you??), you are probably able to keep your operating costs down to a really low amount. Does this mean that you shouldn't at least "try" to get more money per mile so you can save for even nicer things? That's not what I said. Of course you "should" try to get more if you think you should get more. But do you "need" more? The good thing is, you've been able to get good paying loads for a long time. And like it or not, the reality is, you're probably somewhat "spoiled" by getting the rates you do because you're so used to getting them that you don't really know what it's like to have to survive for a few weeks or months on around $3.00 per mile. I'm NOT faulting you for this. It's great that you're able to get more. Seriously, kudos to you. But you are nuts to even bring up things about possibly selling your truck or trailer because the rates dropped from a nice $4.00 or more per mile to $3.50 or maybe a measly $3.00 per mile. Maybe you would just have to take a few loads like that for a few loads or a few weeks is all. (Hopefully). But I agree with what you said in one of your more recent videos (I can't remember which one now) where you mentioned that you don't like taking loads for less because then you set a precedent going forward and brokers and dispatchers start thinking that you'll always take loads for this low amount. I "get" that part.

You know you need stretch flat, drop deck, reefer. Right now trees pay good northern states pay for southern bloom so tree nursery’s loads pay well going up coming down look up rocket they’ll get you brick, block, rock and other loads going back home Step deck is the best trailer for this type of running. Different type of hauling different times of year!

I knew little about trucking you seem to have it down pretty well as you make it look easy when it's really not. I've learned a lot off your videos. I'm now retired and just drive a motorhome. Great Videos 👍 Putting in your dishwasher should be fun too as that I know about.

Pulled flatbed for many many years. To point I was the yearly safety instructor lol. Same headaches as vanm rate up and down load issues and all. However currently we are in a spot that I in 20 years and my parents in 40 years have never seen. Low rates and high rising fuel. One day boards are over flowing with loads next empty.

Brother, I did it for nearly 30 yrs. And my body is shot, My knees, my back, my shoulders. The ONLY way I'd advise it is to go with a 53' step deck (17.5 tire size) and slap a curtain on it and get into hauling machinery. But you need a source to work from. Im up here in Cleveland in the machinery and heavy manufacturing region around the Great lakes. And there's the source. Know I've been out of the truck for a while. But the last I knew, SC wasn't a big heavy manufacturing region. But all you need to do is find a in with a growing company and provide them a service. As for hauling Over Sized loads, Thats a UGLY industry, The small loads (8.5- 10') are so cheap today that there often not even paying for permits. And you screw up on a permit load and the fines are huge. They can tear up the permit and you start all over. Last I knew, KY was the only state you could run at night in (east of the Mississippi River) I ran my 13 axle for almost 4 yrs before I sold/retired. Yes, I made $$$,Yes it was fun (for a while). But when the rates started to tank(drop) I went back to pulling my 53' step deck and made more $$$. You ask HOW??? Because of less dead head, less cost of escorts and permits, and less time waiting on loads to be ready or to unload. Thats why I say a 53' Ultra low (17.5 tires) 3 axle step deck with a Conestoga tarp system on it. Or, (and this is a HUGE Investment A landoll or a Hydraulic tail trailer. If you can find a source of Frieght that's on wheels or tracks. And id try not to use the Frieght off broker boards as my everyday source. A back up?? Yes. If you want to pick my brain a little more on the subject I'd be happy to chat with you. You can DM at my Instagram account Dan Kenworth and get my contact info.

Takes some time to learn how to do things, securement and tarping! No one likes to tarp but it's part of the job and great exercise! Keeps ya in shape!

You made that backing look easy! ADM in Red Wing, Mn. has a Linseed oil loading dock behind their building. The alley was narrower than the one you maneuvered but the tankers I pulled were 11' shorter than your dry van. Strange thing was they had a gate that was a straight shot in that they refused to open.

Check the States you run in with a lowboy trailer many have the 43 foot rule (king pin to last axle on the ground) also a permitted load in certain States you can not drive at night, weekends, snowing or raining. Look into it before jumping into it!

I'm in a day cab Freightliner automatic now decided after several years on the road I'd take it easy with a local gig. Spend more time with my kids. Will you consider in the future buying or renting your own space or garage to switch and store multiple trailers and have a place to work on your truck under cover, somewhere that is more secure and safe to park up when not using your truck

Justin, have you ever considered hotshot? Im thinking of getting out of the rig and getting into that. You have a larger profit margin and less money on upkeep. As much as your home I bet that smaller "office space" wont make much of a difference.
