Some advice from someone who has brought over 100 derelict vehicles back to life in 30 years . I read many a comment here that were less than flattering in reference to your lack of experience . Well it is OK to be less than experienced .Nobody is born with experience it has to be earned and you are earning it now . The good news is that the information you need is far more accessible than it was 30 years ago when I was a kid . The jeep j 10 in this video is a good candidate for a project vehicle for a newer restorer . It is fairly complete and not too far gone . Divide it into smaller projects like engine then suspension and brakes then electrical then paint and body or interior . As you finish each of the smaller projects you get a sense of accomplishment and you'll learn lessons along the way which will help on future projects .

Ya'll keep up the great work and adventure. I've pulled many old vehicles from the weeds and woods and there's no better feeling than getting one that starts without a lot of extra work. try Nebraska, where it can get 110+ with humidity, whereas winter gets well below freezing and lots of snow. the roads that are asphalt get loaded with salt and sand which will rust any car out as it builds up.

Meaning.. the full-time QT was used in the 70s, then they moved to the NP-219, which I believe is also full-time only, and then they used the NP-228, which can be selected between 2wd and full time 4wd, but also has the locked 4-lo.

Great looking truck! Solid body, straight six, bench seat...make it reliable and get some fresh M/Ts on and you'll have a great driver. Treat the paint by giving the surface rust patches a wash down with CLR and hot water, then hit the lot with the old standby Turtle Wax to slow its progress.

I'd put the money into the Jeep, it's a very practical vehicle and I believe pretty rare in decent original condition whereas the Camaro isn't but plenty of people seem to want them so vehicle-specific parts aren't cheap or easy to find and the second half of the '80s seems to have been a very poor period for Camaro build quality and reliability. Plus, a young driver in a car like a Camaro is going to attract a higher level of scrutiny from the police than the same driver in a Jeep pickup so the Jeep would be less hassle in a lot of ways...

+John Doe Any taller vehicle like this or an SUV is much more likely to roll over due to the higher centre of gravity but that doesn't necessarily make them unsafe as the vast majority of them you still need to be exceeding the margins of safe and appropriate driving by quite a margin to get them to roll. But the same thing goes for any vehicle, if you push the envelope too much it'll roll...
@gordongreninger6109
@gordongreninger6109 7 жыл бұрын
John Doe lol jeep roll overs were made notorious by narrow WW2 era mb/cj. whom ever turned u onto that wives tale probably thought indoor plumbing was the devil.
@kendendenton6775
@kendendenton6775 7 жыл бұрын
John that's more common in other models such as cj,tj,yj, so on and so forth however considering it's a truck with a longer wheelbase it doesn't have a high roll risk such as other jeep products
@gosportjamie
@gosportjamie 7 жыл бұрын
+John Doe The problem with the "proper" Jeeps like the short-wheel base is what is sometimes called "grip rolling." Because they're such a short wheelbase it's fairly easy to get them sliding sideways if they're being driven too hard, then, when they've slowed down enough for the tyres to regain traction, they dig in and the high centre of gravity causes them to roll over. This is exactly the issue they had with the original Willys military jeep and was easily sorted by limiting the speed of the vehicle, particularly in off-road driving. The problem with them getting stolen isn't uncommon with proper off-road vehicles which have to be designed and engineered to be able to be fixed in a field far from professional help. As electronic components tend not to like being bounced and jiggled around in serious off-road use it makes sense to limit their use in the vehicles, including modern security systems, as you're royally buggered if an electronic unit goes bad in the middle of the Canadian forests and requires a diagnostic system to find or fix. It also doesn't help that a lot of people that buy these Jeeps go for the soft top option though, to be honest, any vehicle that is designed and built like a proper Jeep is quite likely to be about as secure as a wet paper bag...

Hey Chris the ignition switch is bolted to the base of the steering column. You don't have to take off the steering wheel. Those steering columns are made by GM if that helps to google it.

The ignition switch shouldn't be an expensive part on that truck and if it really is being troublesome and it's not problems with poor engine to body/chassis/frame earth/ground leads it is well worth trying removing the switch from the steering column and soaking it overnight in electrical contact cleaner. Some ignition switches can actually be stripped down if you are very careful doing it (there are lots of very small parts inside) so once they have been cleaned they can be lubricated with dielectric grease (only ever dielectric grease, never ordinary grease which is flammable) and then it should continue to work properly for years. A lot of new reproduction electrical components are not great quality and can be more troublesome than original parts and you don't want to spend money unnecessarily. It is likely that the ignition switch on this truck is a generic part used by a lot of smaller manufacturers being a Jeep from the '80s, and it is unlikely to be a vehicle where the ignition/steering lock and ignition switch are a single assembly as they were largely products of the '90s so it should be perfectly possible to remove the column cowling and then remove the ignition switch from the steering lock. Be careful tracing the wiring back to disconnect it as the connection is often buried deep up behind the dashboard to reduce access for thieves. I've had it before where I've been removing an ignition switch and I've traced the wiring back and not found a connector, so I've clipped the wires and then realised I was tracing the wrong wires and the connector I was actually looking for was close by and easily accessibly. Everything still worked once the job was done but it did make the job much harder than it needed to be having to solder the wires together again. Incidentally, in case people are wondering how I made the mistake, some companies used single use connectors to connect the ignition switch to the wiring loom that can't be released without wrecking the switch and I thought it was one of those...

We had a 79 Wagoneer with Valmet 411 engine (diesel and from a tractor, later with a Holset turbo). About 30 mpg in normal average driving. In case you would swap the engine for a diesel, you should also get stronger driveshafts as they are a bit too weak in that Jeep.

Engine earth/motor ground leads. If the engine can't earth through the earth lead because it's missing, broken or corroded or the terminals are corroded it will try and earth itself through the electrical components like the starter solenoid which often burns them out...

gosportjamie yea this is very annoying and according to many people in the comments it's very common with these jeeps..
@gosportjamie
@gosportjamie 7 жыл бұрын
+thecraig909 It's not really surprising when you think of it, it's an off-road vehicle so it's probably spent time getting mud, water and junk thoroughly covering the underside in a way that doesn't happen to road vehicles so it's likely to have more corrosion issues in those areas, and it doesn't take a lot of corrosion in the right place to cause earthing issues. A lot of people I know would clean up and remake the earth connections before trying to revive an old 4-wheel drive for precisely that reason...

Jeep or Camaro...thats an apples-oranges comparison. the J10 would be pretty good to put some cash into for utility or offroad use. dont see many of them on the road and it looks solid. get some factory manuals and chase wire gremlins. Camaros are all over the place so it will always be easy to find parts for whatever you want to do. that Ford reminds me of my old Dodge Powerwagon with the electrical components. still easy to find those parts since they used the same ones for years. keep doing what you are doing and have doing it.

Idk if your truck has it but on mine there is a switch for the dome light on the drivers side above your head to the left where the seat belt is. If there's a switch there try it
