Danaher covers guard pulling extensively in Feet to Floor 3 and promotes the value of sacrifice throws, especially the “3 Kings” sumi gaeshi, tomoe nage and uki waza, on FtF2. You often come to many of the same conclusions during your independent study of BJJ as Danaher which is impressive. Great minds think alike! Love your content. Keep it up!!!

I think the easiest solution is just treat it like an "own goal" and you just scored a takedown on yourself. It's a viable idea if you think there's an advantage because you think his throwing skill is so much better than yours, or if you feel your ground game is so much better than his. So you concede the throw and throw yourself to control the situation better.

I really like the point about counting a flattened out belly down position with leg control as osaekomi. It would for sure solve stalling in newaza. I've thought about bringing back yuko and awarding it for being stuck in turtle, or even just waza ari.

Hi Shintaro, do you have any followups to the deashi? I'm asking because you said last podcast that in no gi a lot of people are doing the slideby to deashi combo without a follow-up, which is what I do too. I'm researching now and I can only really find osoto, and maaybe kouchi, and I'm curious if there's more options. Thanks! Max

I still feel like pulling guard is more of a "sport" than a "martial" technique because anytime you put yourself on your back and on the ground without the protection of competition rules, it's a huge risk. However, it's clear that the technique and position has history that predates BJJ's rise in popularity because both Judo and Sambo have techniques specifically to counter the position (daki age, cartwheel passes, etc.). However, my biggest reason for taking issue with the technique has less to do with skilled practitioners and more to do with how BJJ rules specifically treat it as the superior, dominant position even when then person on the bottom is unable to execute a sweep or submission from that position. Essentially, according to the rules of BJJ, if someone can pull guard and hold it without making any forward progress, it has the equivalent value as osaekomi in Judo, while Judo treats it as a completely neutral position (which I agree with).
@Skywalker9621411 ай бұрын
Guard pull and butt scoot are very low risk and very hard to counter (if the person knows what he’s doing) and the current BJJ rules doesn’t punish those moves, that’s why they’re so popular in the current meta. Even if you make the guard puller / butt scooter auto lose 4 points, if they can find a way to win, they’ll continue to do just that. Maybe they need to make “just sit down” moves illegal in order to fix the current BJJ format.

@@Skywalker96214 Within the sport of BJJ, I think it's fine; I just think it should count as neutral takedown and neutral position. Basically, do something/do anything applies. Maybe it should be limited or even prohibited in white and blue belt divisions until the players can prove that they are competent at sweeping or submitting from guard. In the real world, I think it's trash, frankly. I get what Shintaro is saying about it being similar to tomoe nage, but even that is called a "sacrifice" throw for a reason. You're basically attempting to turn an already bad situation into a positive one by either escaping or putting yourself directly into the dominant position. Simply putting yourself a subordinate position and hoping to sweep later (i.e., pulling guard) isn't a good idea in a world of hard ground, strikes, and handheld weapons.
@Skywalker9621411 ай бұрын
@@newscoulomb3705 imo, even if it's within the sport context, they should punish or outright ban "sit down" moves, and reward beautiful judo throws & explosive wrestling style takedowns; otherwise, BJJ as a sport is completely unwatchable to the average person, they'd be like "why are two guys sitting down & hugging each other on the ground?" Maybe for safety reasons, they could mandate that white belts start from their knees / butts, then blue belts and higher start from standing.
@adrianarroyo93711 ай бұрын
I've read sever BJJ rules (ibjjf, adcc, naga and ajp from the top of my head), and can't see how pulling guard and holding it without making any forward progress is the equivalent to an osaekomi. You only get points from guard when you sweep or go to the back, but otherwise, I see guard treated as a neutral position, like you say happens in judo

I used to practice bjj with the mindset of never pulling guard until I got thrown a couple times or landed on my own foot all weird. Double guard pull is always hilarious
@keropnw342511 ай бұрын
Guard is a much worse position in a real fight than in a grappling match or even MMA. Ground and pound with your head bouncing off hard floor or pavement is extremely dangerous and they can stand up and stomp. Guard is a majorly disadvantaged position but with the opportunity to counter attack.
@keropnw342511 ай бұрын
If there is an enormous skill gap sure you can win by pulling guard but even then it's high risk.
@keropnw342511 ай бұрын
If there is a big skill gap why not just take them down and work from safer top position? Also in MMA already guard is in a pretty bad state and mostly gets shut down by ground and pound except for the really elite guys using z guard like Charles Oliveira. And like I said MMA is on soft mats and stomps and soccer kicks are banned protecting the guard player a lot.
@StephenVTran11 ай бұрын
Yeah engaging in full guard should ideally be a last resort in mma. Only some guys in the UFC have very dangerous guards (Khabib, Oliveira, Gilbert Burns). Although pulling guard is here to stay. there are schools out there teaching more stand up as well as not accepting being pinned by giving up your back upon a takedown and scrambling to your feet or iimediately attacking after escaping a bad position from bottom

I've always been a fan of sacrifice throws. Recently, I've mostly been going for Tomoe Nage and if it fails, I've got sweeps and submissions, an entire system. Or Tomoe directly into an armbar, multiple variations.

And second question: can you make a video about the side body lock position? I have difficulties finishing the takedown from here if they have an overhook and they're standing perpendicular to me with a strong wide base. They threaten uchi mata and harai goshi. I try throwby's, hip toss, and just folding them over, but it's all difficult. I would appreciate it! Thanks. Max

Guard allows you to keep some level of control of your opponent. i think guard has its place in a martial setting as a last resort i.e. this position is preferable over having NO control whatsoever of my opponent after being thrown, failing a throw, being countered or what have you. Snapping up your guard and being able to recover by sweeping, submitting or getting out of bottom position is to me, 100% preferable to just being in a bottom position with no real alternatives. Once youre in guard should you stay there? Should you actively seek to just pull guard? Absolutely not.

Guard pulling is exploiting the rulesets. In Judo, Sambo etc guard was a result of your (sacrifice) throw failing and trying to not get pinned. In ancient times when on your back you had to worry about hard surface, melee weapons, second attackers, getting run over by horses and chariots etc. Even today every pissed off bystander can decide to throw some soccer kicks if he feels like it. There is a reason why most wrestling styles on earth consider being taken down or on your back a loss.

Don't pull Guard learn judo and throw everyone then transition into your ground game. Not only will it help with self defense but great for MMA etc. Pulling guard is only great for BJJ rule set but in the long run its not applicable in other environments. Pulling guard is equivalent to being in turtle in judo Because of judo rule set. In reality being in Turtle position is not applicable anywhere else but in judo.
