Shea Moisture is still very disappointing to me. While I’m pleased to see the make up of the company is very black and what they are doing for the cultural advancement, the product as a result of the sale has dramatically changed. Many of the products I loved when I first used the brand are being replaced with “All Lives Matters” type products if you get what I mean lol..very much like those terrible commercials. I don’t know how to reconcile that with the company as a whole. To me, it’s still a sell out. At least with the Mane Choice products, the target audience is still us and it’s reflected in products we have access to. Thanks for sharing!

Oh yeh!!! That's a throwback.my mom used that decades ago and used it on our hair when we were children too after she greased our scalp real good. Our hair was down our backs while my baby sister and my mom hair was at their butt. Now my hair ain't no longer than a quarter past 12! I recently got it chopped all off. It was long to begin with, but this time around I believe it will be better

Some people forget that a business owner goal often times is to sell to a bigger one so they can expand, unless they intend to keep it in the family like Oyin handmade. As long as they were supporting the community before and continue to after with no dramatic changes, I'll support occasionally. However, I will still move on to smaller black companies who tryna make it or ones that are super consistent.

They drastically changed the formula of their Nourish and shine butter. It had mango, kokum and illipe butter as the very first exotic ingredients. And now they've replaced the kokum and illipe butter with sunflower and jojoba oil and there's hardly any mango butter in it now since the product is now listed at the very bottom. It's so disappointing smh

I support Black owned or Black supportive companies. The company has to be diverse in its inclusion of the black community. I also judge quality, price and if the product is worth my money. Just being Black owned isn’t an automatic yes, non-Black automatically a no. I will continue to do extensive research before I buy.

I found out recently Aunt Jackie's isn't black owned, but the creator and other staff are black. I definitely use some of these brands in this video along with BOMB. I think its important to support both sides, its still in our community. Especially, If you like the products and they cater to you. I absolutely love, African Pride's Moisture Miracle and I use some of Shea Moisture's products in my childrens' hair. I enjoyed this series, thank you for sharing ♥

Carol's Daughter, sold to Loreal I believe, ingredients has changed A LOT. I was riding with her when she was working out of her kitchen in Brooklyn . The Hair Balm was the BOMB, as well as the Black Vanilla line; along with all her other fan favs. all have changed. The list of ingredients use to be short, now long with all kinds of other additions, That was the biggest disappointment for me. Cantu, Dark & Lovely and I think a oldie TCB as well.

I was with you right up until you said Shea Moisture. And ftr, it was less the commercials and more that they lied about the changes in the ingredients and we had to find out by comparing the labels on their products sold in the UK. I won’t use the products of a company that can’t be trusted. Many a black woman has lost hair over using products from an unscrupulous company. Also, I agree that it is not too much to ask that a company’s employees be diverse, especially when they are marketing to PoCs. But we need to ensure that those same employees are having their voices heard and heeded. Diversity is great; inclusion is better.

I understand where you are coming from. The problem is that after they are bought they slowly change. It happened with Carol’s Daughter and it will probably happen with Mane Choice. Carol’s Daughter was wonderful when it just had the one shop in Brooklyn! I won’t even look at them now. Black Wall Street kept their money in their community. I just switched to Strands of Faith and honestly it’s a really really good product. Thanks for the info!

Mane choice and ORS( I still use the old name) are great in that I couldn't tell that anything changed until I heard videos mentioning it and did my own research. I know of the community work the mane choice has done so I still will support occasionally as someone said. I definitely remember African Pride being that brand that was caping like they black owned so I appreciate the behind the scenes changes. Shea moisture....I don't rush into cancel culture but the commercials and ingredient changes were enough for me to give up on them entirely. Too many good black owned brands for that. I again appreciate the changes they have made though. In my opinion, there's no excuses for bigger companies to not have massive representation on their teams. Even if it's specifically a team for the natural hair lines they have come up with (ie aussie, suave).

I’m so glad somebody spoke about this with decorum. Unfortunately companies being run by a majority of black/brown people means nothing to some. It’s who owns the company is the bottom line. I buy products from mostly black owned companies but I still use products by others. Sometimes when you name a product, and it’s not black owned, someone always claps back with “That’s not black owned. We need to do better. We need to blah blah blah.” And sometimes they are really rude about it. Some act as like, if you’re using a non-black owned product that your hair LOVES, you’re supposed to stop. No, I don’t think so.

I think some people come from a lack of business knowledge. All companies/owners go through a some form of transition either the company is sold for numerous reasons or passed down to next generation(which isn't always best Walmart in particularl). I'll continue to support the brand that remains to former owners vision. Once the focus goes left (like BET went through), I can no longer support it.

Thanks for the video. However, I will add that it is a little problematic to say that these are not black owned companies anymore, but blacks are employees: that’s hustling backwards. That puts us right back to being the creators of everything, and the “Owners” of nothing. This perpetuates ‘others’ being the “Owners” of everything. (As far as supporting or not supporting, I am not making an argument on that: it’s up to the individual. But, I don’t want the messaging to be that we should put ourselves in an employee situation when we created the product. I wish they’d sold to a black company. Paying a non-black company for the work and creation of black ppl sounds reallllllll 1860-ish to me. It’s Black Economic DIS-Empowerment. Would LoReal or Vidal Sasson ever sale to a Black Hair Company even though it plans on continuing to cater to its white audience? 🗣No. (First of all, they’re smart enough not to even sale to a Black Company!) But, let’s say they did, and some white person got on KZbin and said “...but they still have all white people at the table to make decisions...” DO👏🏿YOU👏🏿Think👏🏿white people be okay with that? No. Would a Mexican or Asian Restaurant or grocer sale to a Black Company? Would a Jewish business sale to a Black Company, so long as it marketed as a Jewish Company? No. When all of the above gets ready to sale, they would keep it in their communities... not on the “Worker/Employee” level, but on the “Ownership” level, where it matters.💜 Ownership, and Ownership alone is the answer. Exactly, and this is my biggest gripe with black company owners that sell to non-black companies! But I believe that ownership and collaboration is the answer. Collaboration is the hardest thing for black women to do, yet it is the missing puzzle piece because everyone is so busy trying to out perform one another that they forget the key ingredient for success for most non-black companies is that they collaborate whether through acquisitions or mergers, but primarily with their own people first. When they see a lucrative enough opportunity, and one that their own people can't help them take advantage of, then they will branch out. The results of which we know all too well. I can't tell you how many times I applied to minority owned companies as a black chemist, or offered to help someone (whether a fellow chemist or company owner) out for free and received no response. Its really sad that people are still behaving this way in the 21st century, as if they can do everything on their own. But then they turn around and accept "help" from another group.

I love to buy Black whenever I can. That being said, while I support companies' growth and expansion, part of me gets tired of "Staple Musical Chairs." Seems like as soon as I started loving certain products from Jane Carter, Shea Moisture, Mane Choice, Carol's Daughter etc, they sold to a conglomerate. Sometimes those buyouts wind up with product reformulations that don't work for my hair. At this point, I'll continue to support Black owned on a convenience basis, because it's likely that for all my support, my reward will be a buyout and reformulation of my favorite items. If that's my reward, I may as well just focus on what's affordable and works primarily, and whether they're Black owned secondarily. 🤷🏾‍♀️🙃

Why on earth are these precious black-owned companies being sold ?!?!? This is an outrage. As stated in the video, black women spend a great deal of money for hair care products. Any yet, blacks can’t hold on to companies they have founded ?!?!? The goal should not be to get rich but to remain black-owned and profitable. Even though these outside companies that have purchased Shea Moisture, etc. are continuing to employ blacks, create the same products for blacks, and market to blacks, you can be assured that the biggest profits are going to the new owners of these companies and NOT to blacks. I’m a former stockbroker so I know. These companies are continuing their ties with blacks only to ensure their own profits. If black-owned businesses so readily sell, there will never be the strength that comes from OWNERSHIP. The same scenario plagues the music industry. There, blacks put rock/r&b/contemporary music on the board. But they own virtually none of the top record companies or distribution companies. And, thus,do not own the rights to their own music. That is why Prince left Warner Music. Black artists only have “labels” within the larger white-owned companies. Blacks are there to “get money” for these owners. Hey, wasn’t that what slavery was all about ?!?!?

As someone who has worked for non-black owned companies for the entirety of my 10+ year career, just know that employees can sometimes be more loyal to the brand or customers than they are the company ownership or leadership. I will not go into specifics about which company on this list that I have inside knowledge about or what that knowledge is, but I would encourage consumers to dig deeper when doing your research. For instance, when I job search I typically check reviews on glassdoor (older and newer) and l look at linkedin profiles, among other things. Don't be deceived by black people in front facing positions such as marketing or brand management, trust me these company owners know the game and strategically place people in certain positions or retain employees for the sake of the company's bottom line...
