It’s our first Patreon-requested video! From Mary Shelley to L. Ron Hubbard, we look at the history of science fiction and how it appeared in pulp literature, covering the 1910s to the genre’s peak in the 1950s!
I do not own any of the clips presented. Credit to the copyright holders and thanks to the original uploaders.

It’s great how you lay out the history of all of the subjects you highlight. You put such care in telling these stories, and it shows. The visuals are stunning! Excellent video. Thank you

Not quite true pulps but I have a huge collection of vintage scifi magazines from the 60's to the early 90's. Awesome video.

Pulp science fiction in 1920-1950 was very important to Sagan and Clarke.

I always find it funny and ironic how there's an entire line of prestigious sci fi awards named for a well known crook and POS that would do very shady business practices and was actually a very bad writer. Hugo Gernsback is one big example of a one-hit-wonder. Did the right thing at the right time, but afterwards, it can be argued that he actually damaged the overall progress of sci fi as a mature genre to be taken seriously.

I found this quite helpful. I'm curious how Sword and Planet, specifically A Princess of Mars, fits into all this

A Princess of Mars was originally serialized as "Under the Moons of Mars" in All-Story Magazine. Specifically in 1912.

The state of publishing is quite sad and a mere shadow of the days of magazines and days when an editor would actually answer a query directly - and even give writers advice if not choosing to publish a writers work.

Did Shelley write a story called The Last Man, as the doc says? Stapledon wrote the important book of that title.

I’ve got a compilation book of Tarzan clone portraits from Japan! Honestly, it’s called the great jungle graphics of the new century boys.

Easy to see where the movies' version of Severus Snape has possible inspiration...That vampire(?) in the black cloak is very Snape like...or more correctly, Snape looks very similar to this character...

It strikes me that ancient people's records of ships and weapons that gave the status of gods to the protagonists who used them are still considered science fiction. shepherds, hunters, gatherers talking about energies, radiations and constellations and flying wonders...?

An interesting subject which is spoiled by a rather hurried, monotone, smug, dismissive dry, bored delivery which has a laughably sneering "I'm just a bored intellectual made to do this" kind of tone as if "Alexander Dane" from "Galaxy Quest." might have done it. It was so perfunctory & rushed that it wasted a lot of the research it was supposed to inform with. Oh well. Less snobby videos on this subject await. I'll try them instead.

I don’t know if it was your intention but considering me an intellectual and comparing me to Alan Rickman are both huge compliments. Thank you and I’m sorry this wasn’t for you. It was produced for someone who supports me and I was admittedly out of my comfort zone. Best of luck finding what you were looking for.
