In recent years Filthy is the main reason I tune in. He needs a permanent spot on the show when he retires from racing. Either call in or a guest.

I landed on a kid at the Vegas track in a race back in the day because there wasn’t a flagger on the jump with a blind landing. Broke his femur, he bleed out his eye. I got a broken arm, knocked out, ruined a set of excels and bent my pro tapers. Track got sued by the kids parents I hit. Track didn’t last that long after that. There’s absolutely no excuse for flagging issues in a AMA sanctioned race and it’s a fear we don’t need to have when we’re going over a jump.

The nationals have decent support for flagging. A lot of the confusion is that the layman doesn't understand the differences between the flaggers and their responsibilities. No flagger is another matter entirely. If you're gung-ho to help your local tracks out, organize a volunteer flag crew for the track.

I swear my bike must have the opposite of the automatic throttle Steve thinks the hrc boys have. Apparently "all you gotta do is hold it wide open in 3rd" yet somehow the throttle always seems to close on the approach to the big jumps🤷‍♂️

Glad to hear that WOG (wheels on the ground) flagger call in. Been flagging Thunder Valley for a few years, so thought laying out the flaggers and their responsibilities might help the layman understand. But, before I do that, I need to say it's pathetic that our media people, who often flap their gums about flagging issues, never flagged a nationals race. Matthes (he's not the only one) has been going on about this for years. But, he also says he'll never flag a race. People in the media should speak from a position of knowledge, not just a huge hot gas bag. Either go flag a race, or sit down with the guys responsible for safety and have them explain it to you. This is how Thunder Valley does it: Yellow flaggers. These are volunteer flaggers. They may change a bit, but lately I've been seeing more returning volunteers, which is critical because the series depends on them to properly staff the track with flaggers. A flagger with a yellow flag is supposed to look down the track from where they stand to the next flagger. Riders that go down in their section, which is where they stand and beyond (with the flow of the race), and the next down-track flagger are who they should wave the flag for. That guy in the original photos at the downstream side of the jump after the crash will have little to no effect on safety in that situation. These flaggers have no headsets. Their "pay" is free admission, parking, and an HOV spot, if you want it. They get a free subway sandwich and soda half way through the day. They work from essentially before the first riders are on the track until about 20-30 minutes after the last moto, either helping to put away equipment or monitor areas of the track to tell the idiots not to steal the banners. They don't get any breaks, unless something's scheduled or there's time between riders on the track. So, that's a day that starts somewhere around 7-8am and ends at around 5pm or so. WOG (wheels on the ground). Also volunteers. They have a yellow flag and a red cross flag. They also have a headset, as their purpose is to get the riders to keep their wheels on the ground in the case where someone's gone down in a critical area of the track, usually a blind landing jump. They work as a team with the AMA guy who's positioned somewhere along that jump so he can see if there's a problem. The call signal would be something like "wheels 26, shut it down", to where the WOG flagger, who has his number designated prior to the day, will respond with "wheels 26 shutting it down", and starts waving the red cross flag so the riders know to roll the jump. AMA/track crew flaggers. These are the people who are "paid" for their presence. It may be the AMA spotter working with the WOG flagger. It may be an AMA guy helping to fill the gaps where there aren't enough flaggers. It may be guys positioned throughout the track. These guys will have a combination of the blue, yellow, and red flags. So, SOME guys are paid flaggers...not every one of them is a volunteer working for nothing. The "just throw money at it" is the lazy person's solution. From what I saw regarding the Deegan incident, the AMA spotter should call wheels on the ground, and the red cross flag should start waving. Reality is it doesn't happen instantaneously the moment a rider goes down. The AMA guy has to notice it, he has to reprioritize what he's doing, make the call, and the WOG flagger has to get to the edge of the track and wave his flag. Reality is a few riders can get by before that happens. Apparently there was a call to the spotter to get the lapper flag out, so that might've caused confusion. It does help if the flagger rode the track and has some racing experience. Where they positioned me (I was the WOG flagger at the base of the pit for the Monster Energy Jump) left a blind spot for the yellow flagger who was upstream of me. So, I slightly shifted my coverage upstream of the jump by about 20 feet. My head was on a swivel all day. Hope this explains some things. It's not just the dumb non-paid flagger's fault. Lots of things can contribute to a situation. And, considering a flagger sees about 250 laps and maybe 600 riders through the entire day, they're doing their job more often than they aren't. Throw in the last third of riders can be real knuckleheads.....I've almost smacked some of them on the helmet with my flag to get them to acknowledge it's not just another race lap and something's going on.

It would be a dream of mine to travel the country and be a flagger for moto/superscross! They could buy a sprinter van or a big motor home and hire a driver and let the same crew do every race. If my expenses were paid I wouldn’t require much more to be happy doing that as a job!

I find it hilarious Americans make out they’re the most patriotic country yet need to ask for donations to race a world olympic caliber event. They are greedy, money has never been an issue over the decades until recent years. You even have guys like Dangergirl who thinks he is the biggest patriot turning down wanting to represent his country. Last year you almost didn’t even send a team. Australia who has to travel even further to europe, knowing we never really had a chance for even a podium has never had an issue sending a team and having their best riders more than happy to represent their country regardless of the result or the cost and never needed a hand out.

don't be a dunce. they don't go to the MXdN because they don't want to. They make up excuses so idiots like you don't trash them on social media. "Americans make out they’re the most patriotic country" You're just projecting. Americans don't acknowledge how patriotic or unpatriotic they are. they just behave patriotically. the rest is your perception. I feel like you are projecting because you probably feel insecure about the crappy country you are from. no one gives a fuck if some other country is better at riding dirtbikes than us. those things aren't important to Americans anymore. We've conquered that mountain... not only is America the most successful country in the olympics, were still the most successful in the MXdN. or basically anything else we wanted to compete at... even hockey. America is the greatest country in the history of global sports competition. At some point you just don't need to prove it anymore and I guess that's where most Americans are with things like MXdN. We just don't care.
