SA formerly known as Hugo has been a fixture of ICTF Long Beach since they opened in the 60s. It is here junk, high quality metal, and iron ore and taconite begin their journey to Shenzhen China or Korea. First trucks or railcars from Union Pacific and BNSF are brought in and weighed at one of two yards Berth 210 at Pier 400 or Pier T Berth 140. Once the scrap comes in it is either removed by a grapple or lifted off with a shier tractor and cut up. rail cars are unload using a magnet or discharged in the shed. Once the material has been removed a grapple sifts it and it is loaded into the shredder where it is reduced until it is the size of sand or gravel depending on the customer. Once the load is shredded it is loaded into a dump truck with a loader which takes it to the dock and it is dumped into a pan or picked up with a grapple and dumped into the ships hold. Once the ship is loaded with scrap and iron ore it is sent to Shenzhen or Korea and made into something new be it containers or goods which arrive at Long Beach each day.

How does the huge pile of random types of metals get sorted?
@alanakins30992 жыл бұрын
When you come off the scales a sa employee will see what you have and direct you to the correct pile
@Busdude97 Жыл бұрын
Separate your metals. Trust me its faster n you get more money. Theres different areas the scale house operator will direct you to. Ferrous/non ferrous.

I'll never forget as a young man, taking 185 lbs of steel to Long Beach recycler figuring I'd get at least $3.00 for it... The clerk threw like 75 cents down on the counter, I was like "Whut???" LOL Aluminum so much better for cash. Steel is for those who can bring in automobiles, etc.

You have to remember this video came out in 2009, it' now 2020. And we're almost to 2021, steel scrap prices have probably changed quite a bit since then! :D

They sure have: "Turkish mills are looking for $460 for shred and $450 for 80/20 heavy melt. U.S. exporters will probably end up selling at $455 for shred, which is still a good price. I expect more action from Turkey this week."

Think how much more we could save the environment buy not shipping the scrap over to Asia and then they produce a new car or home Appliances and ship back over to the U.S .
@lpfanatic200311 жыл бұрын
That's a really good mind set to have. Sure, they are taking American jobs but how about the jobs you're costing with that mind set when it comes to the people who collect and process it here in the US before it is shipped over seas. Also, American manufactures can buy the same material that the Chinese are, it's just a matter that they don't want to. So it's their own fault.
@paulbryan67165 жыл бұрын
The ONLY reason it is being shipped to China is for cheaper LABOR costs, nothing more, nothing less. Follow the money people! Wake up!
