The only old pulteney I've had so far is the discontinued 17 year. It was fabulous. Agree with you on these coca cola whiskies. I never buy a sherried whisky that does not mention on the label what type of sherry was used to season the cask it was matured in. Interestingly what I've noticed is any sherry matured whisky that does mention the cask type rarely comes with coca cola colour!. Some of these signatory bottlings have been outright off putting(for me) just because of their 'unnaturally' natural colour!!. And I believe most of these bottles don't mention what sherry was used to season the cask.

Finally a private bottling I'd be willing to try and good luck finding it in SoCal. Oh well... The only Old Pulteney I've tried is the core 12. I enjoyed that slight briny sea air remembrance on the palate.

I don't disagree with your speculative comments about the three sherry-influenced whisky colours, i.e. hypothesizing experimentation, and/or differing levels of sherry residue within the respective barrels, but one thing I think important to note is that *most* of the colour-extraction from sherry-influenced barrels (and more than likely all barrels, not just ex-sherry ones) happens in just the first few months in the barrel. We have the idea that a whisky that's spent, say, 10 years in a sherry butt will necessarily be much darker than one that's spent, say, only 1 year in same, but that's not really the case. Colour extraction is far from linear. I'm afraid I don't have any (scientific or industry) references for that view, but the topic has arisen in discussions with various parties who seemed like they knew what they were talking about.

If that sherry casks are fresh then the color is probably quickly imparted

Absolutely can't see the point of dumping Old Pulteney in a heavy sherry cask. A sure way of removing any distillery character. I think your favourite would be mine too. Distillery OP is a shadow of its former glory. I am very fond of the old 17 and 21 which were well crafted with a delicious drop of sherry without overwhelming the distillery character. Cheers Jason
