The really cool thing that you could do is, using an Oscilloscope you can superimpose two wave patterns to find the harmonic frequency and have that frequency below 20 hz so you cant hear it and watch how stuff moves, things will move off the table top seemingly on their own with no manipulation. The first practical use i can think of is to affix these to concrete forms, but thats too straight forward, perhaps affixing them to say , a concrete 3D printer. Perhaps these can be used to enhance the 3D printing of concrete and enable stronger concrete to be used.

you should try super glue with baking soda. It hardens instantly as soon as baking soda comes into contact with super glue and can even be sanded down if needed.

Some advice for forming the foot: find a very large ball-bearing to put on the other side of the socket and smash the washer between them in the vise. Perfect cup every time and a bit easier than trying to hold it and hit with a hammer!

Yes it will work. Everything the end of the moving rod is in contact with, fixed or not to a certain place it will make sound in that material. You can build big versions of this and make a tactile transducer too or as it is called bass shaker. You can find videos on these in this video description

you don´t have to preheat the surface as a general rule to get a good solder joint, the important factor is to see the solder flow out properly, it may look in this video it flows out less than good but it was good enough. it can be a general rule also that sometimes you gonna melt or damage things if you heat them too long which can give you a really bad day too

You are legally allowed to build any patented device for your own use but you are not allowed to copy the device with the intent of making commercial gain during the patent period (usually 20 years from the patent being granted). Frankly, I doubt the patent protection on any 'actuator', which is basically a coneless loudspeaker, would stand up to a challenge in court - the basic operating principle goes back to 1876!

The washer or the foot as you may call it carry the whole weight of the driver. The plexiglass is the suspension that keeps the driver in the middle of the voice coil travel and allows for the whole suspension to flex allowing the sound to pass through to the foot and into the surface the speaker is standing on. It have to be able to flex some but still be able to carry the weight of the whole speaker so the plexi is a good thing to use here.

Yes, the audio is a bit shaped by the properties of the materials resonating with the device so in basic terms it will be different on various materials. It works to rebuild a woofer to a giant transducer which I also have videos on you can watch. It is more used to shake objects such as your chair, sofa or bed as a physical feedback device and it works very well like that. But they are poor for use in full range applications like this video shows here

well that was well interesting... although you do know that the speaker would probably give you around 85 db with 1 watt and that could in turn be amplified with a nicely designed enclosure? anyhow if you do need a speaker like that i would suggest you use something with a smaller motor! the xmax will make it jump around as you mentioned, so getting a big (2"-2,5") aluminum tweeter with low fs and running it without a crossover you should be better of. i couldn't find anything suitable at parts express to link but i would belive having a motor with alot less xmax and maybe using neo magnets would help.

hampus Cronholm it is true the same speaker would perform louder with the same power in a proper box but the concept of the surface speaker is to play without it and make sound trough Solid surfaces with contact. Using a smaller motor would not make the driver more powerful or make it jump less, in fact it would lower performance if the motor was small. The mass of the magnet is where the main magic happens when making it to a tactile surface speaker. The mass has to be here to act as a counter weight to make the power from the coil go down to the playing surface and more mass will make the driver itself more steady as it plays. Same goes for the voice coil and x-max. As we rebuild the driver and uses a very stiff suspension the original X-max won’t matter at all but as we takes away excursion we also suffer from less efficient cooling of the coil itself and makes much more stress on this poor thing so a large and high watt rated coil will handle more power over time when it works this way. There are ways to improve performance and it is to keep all moving parts as lightweight as absolutely possible and it will boost overall performance and range of sound as well more than changing the size of the driver. Naturally my design is likely far from perfect and it is likely many things that can be done better but I won’t work more on this due to the patent claims around this kind of stuff. To begin I made this video just to share ideas around this topic and make it possible for others to learn and improve from this :)

Yes the plexi is used as the spring and the flex is very important for the sound to travel down to the surface. It is rather tight torque around the plexi otherwise it may lead to rattle sounds and so on. There are 3 purposes why I use this material but others might substitute but with various results, but first is to carry the weight of the driver to keep the voice coil in the very center position in all directions. The other is to let sound pass through with as little loss as possible. And the third is to keep the moving mass as light weight as possible since the heavier the moving parts are the more audio and power you lose. And plexi is pretty easy to work with. But you could probably use a plastic ruler or two as well if you can’t get anything else

Have you built two speakers yourself? :) My first guess would be that you might not have the speaker centered in the magnet. It is important to check when the speaker is standing on the foot that the voice coil is in the middle position of its resting state. Meaning it should not be pushed inward or held out by the plexi glass. If both speakers are centered the same way they should sound equal. You can also test to swap them out and see if you move the problem with the speaker to the other side. Best of luck!

The tweeter is simply to add audio on the upper edge of the range. It was not many other ways I could attach it to the driver but it did not reject much either. It depends on how the polarity of the magnets match up or not. But it worked just fine to have it there

As long as the glue bonds enough to the surfaces it should work with hot glue as well, however if the glue is softer it may dampen the high frequencies some as a result as it would absorb some of the vibrations more than hard glue

Can You use it instead of an exciter in a demodulated mode loudspeaker? I want to build cheap DML speakers but I live in Europe and it is expensive to import audio exciter from US.

tybysh it should be possible to modify the design to work more as a dml speaker if you so want in various ways. If you plan to use a regular speaker to power a fixed plate membrane in a dml setup instead and the driver not need to keep its own weight up you could probably build a fixture and use a lightweight tube or something to transfer the vibrations to the membrane plate. Most of the time you get better frequency response the lighter the materials you are using. A surface speaker needs it’s own mass as a counterweight for the energy that moves the vibrations down to the surface it play against and thus need a strong suspension that keeps this stable in center but it also cuts down on efficiency due to this.

Thank you :) you could substitute the plexiglass with another material but it can affect how the speaker plays as well. The stiffer the straps are the more power you gonna need to play the same volume and you can risk overheating the coil easier as a result but the straps also needs to be stiff enough to carry the weight of the whole driver to keep the coil in the center. So basically you could substitute but you need to have in account how the material gonna resonate and carry the speaker assembly whilst giving enough play to transfer the vibrations to the foot and surface it places on

Victor Alejandro López the lengt of the straps are made the same as the diameter of the speaker you are using. And generally 3mm thick. The width of the straps are decided with the weight of the driver. The heavier it it the wider you need to make them to make a good balance in how much they can move versus carry the weight of the total assembly. The rules are kinda simple to gain more power from this. Namely: the lighter the moving parts are the higher power you get. And you need to have as easy movement of the vibrating parts as possible but without making it unstable or too easy to break. So generally a heavy magnet and basket and ultralight moving parts that is still strong and rugged and lined up correctly in center when the driver stands on the foot and you get the best result

Nice job! You inspired me :) building one myself right now. Been thinking about the concept all day haha, improving it a little. What about some (rubber?) Damping between the plexi and the frame, and stiffen up the spider or even add an extra spider a like, so the coil wont be pushed in to far and it can rest on the piston and be able to move freely from the frame, wich is probably helping its response, and the weight of the frame itself can act like a sort of damper, vibration/weight/gravity :) keep up the good work! Ps. All those haters.. i dont get it, probably they dont want to use their brains.. ((neww)improved)stuff will only happen after trial & error ;) Greetings from Holland.

Thank you for your feedback! Yes there is certainly ways you can improve how the driver going to work and probably the foot itself is a good way to start and you could add some rubber layer to dampen it a bit but it may also take sound away in the process, but the best thing you could get is some kind of sticky hard silicone that kinda stick to the surface that would make it rock solid in that part and would improve sound. And making the spider harder using more layers can help keeping the coil in center and stabilize the build but mostly the plexiglass gonna keep it hard enough to not slack if you tighten it off center and calibrate it for the drivers weight to end in the center position of the coil. Making the driver too stiff will make the coil suffer more from the heat generated and you lose efficiency of your device but would however improve the response and dynamics more. You are fully free to make your own modifications of your driver and experiment with what works the best and you will end up with an even better driver than mine :) Why so many people react to this video is a lot because of misunderstanding about the patents that the respective owner claims that I show in this video but I do not own any of these myself but I need the information to show this on KZbin. And the other half is because many don’t understand the concept of this type of speaker either and also that it’s not better than real speakers. And this video is nothing but a educational guide and help for people that actually want to learn about speakers and how to make this kind of thing just for the fun of it. Everyone thinks different and I respect that as well but I also wants people to show some respect as well for their opinions. Anyway I would be very glad to hear how your speaker turns out for you! I am very curious what the real world application for this would be. I like your video and attention to detail but as the sound may be fairly loud there are small speakers that must sound much better. I am just curious of the thought process behind this method of recreating sound waves?

Daniel Parks Thanks, well the real world use of this kind of speaker usually goes to the fact it can be cool. You may use the speaker agains a window or other surface and the sound will travel to the other side and can be pretty loud on the other side. Surface speaker can be very compact and easy to carry if you buy a real one powered with batteries. But in aspects of practical use and sound quality you may surely be better off with a real boxed speaker. But for this home made project it is very good for learning audio dynamics and constructing things. And the fact that we do it just because we can :)

you may use a 10" speaker if you want to build a shaker but they will have very poor sound in this size as the moving mass is too much so using a small speaker and keep the weight low is better for sound, using metal bars would partly work but the flex would be less and thus less performance

It is flexible yet strong enough to carry the weight of the driver. For sound to travel down to the surface the rod need some excursion which the plexi glass nicely gives. But you could use something else like a plastic scale or something else that also flex a bit but they may crack or introduce unwanted harmonics to the sound as for example a metal strip would do :)

Adrian Van F thanks! The tweeter is connected in series with the capacitor and that set is in parallel with the driver. Putting the capacitor in series with the tweeter acts as a high pass filter. It needs to be a cap designed for AC voltage to work but you will mostly find them on stock speakers anyway so you just need to keep it :)

What do they do? Well if you remove the tweeters you have built a Low Frequency Transducer for almost nothing compared to different (very few) brands. I personally use the Buttkicker LFEs, however this is an ingenious method. Imagine if you will... You live in an apartment and want to blast heavy Bass with a movie! NOT, because BASS = Complaints! Transducers are almost always mistaken for "shakers"? People tend to believe these just 'shake'. WRONG. In fact these (just like my Buttkickers) act like 'Silent' speakers. In fact the best way to describe this is to tell you about "Bob". Bob visits my house and I put on a film with the bass blazing! He says WOW! That's amazing! I pause the film and have him sit in my chairs WITH my Buttkickers on, THEN I turn off my two 15" subwoofers without telling him and hit play. Bob says "HOLY CRAP, that sounds SO much better, I can feel everything, the explosions are so real, I can feel the bullets!". Then I tell him to stand up without touching anything... Bob stands up and says "WTF?" See when he got up he couldn't hear any bass other than my mid levels. Transducers are actually playing the entire range of Bass you have them set for (Even lower than speakers) and even a Deaf person can "hear" rain (for example). They fool your brain and truly add to the home theater effect. Professional bands even have them mounted under the stage sometimes so that they can feel the bass and stay on rhythm. This is the best example I can give you of what they do. My Buttkicker LFEs have a 3lb metal magnetic "floating" piston inside what looks like a 6"x6" cylindrical amp. I run them in pairs off a 1000 watt Buttkicker Amplifier with a total of 4 in my theater (2 Amps). Its VERY difficult to ever go back to just speakers after using transducers. No matter how big or how much speaker you can afford it still just doesn't FEEL the same! Good Luck!

it is like you say in many ways in what you wrote, however will there still be some difference between a shaker that is rather big and a driver this small as in this video, I actually do have Buttkickers in my home cinema system to enhance the experience in movies and it is sure amazing how much more you gain by doing so, I have built my shakers myself and uses a 1200W RMS amplifier to power them and it is more than enough to power this application. in fact, if I play as loud mine can go and don't sit in the bed it would jump around on the floor. but to the topic here in your thoughts, the difference you will experience with such small driver as here is that the whole mechanism is much lighter than a big driver and the frequency response will be much more suitable to transfer sound into other objects that is within the hear able range. even without a tweeter the small transducer will still sound rather good and you will amplify the sound greatly on certain surfaces. the concept of this speaker is not to be very practical in general because it do have many downsides, it is a cool thing to take a portable surface speaker and place on your buddies door and play some corny music he will hear as good on the inside as you will hear it on the outside, windows and other thinner objects will be very loud on both sides. but also a speaker you can take on the trip and place on the picnic table and play your music with and don't need to have much extra stuff that may be bigger. for the bass shaker then, it is designed to play very deep sound, even lower than you can actually hear but you will think you hear it in your head because you feel the bass so to speak, the sound will be amplified and much better in your mind when you combine the actual sound with what you feel at the same time. when it comes to the design of these they have a much larger mass and they will have extreme power on the low frequency rather than the high, if you would play unfiltered sound through these they would just annoy you with the dull echoing voice. now when you play low frequency by shaking your chair, bed or whatever you may have it mounted on it wont't really amplify sound, you are shaking the object at such low frequency on a non sealed object that the sound don't really amplifies much and also often a soft cloth covered furniture. the sound won't really travel good this way and stay were you sit. it's like putting a sub woofer outside it's box and try play deep bass on it and it just won't play well outside the box, because it makes acoustic short out on itself and silence itself. I have actually tried if such big transducer would really make a good surface speaker just like a small one and the answer is no by far, the mass is simply too big to play music on other surfaces. but as always with these kind of projects it mostly goes for our own purpose as we wish, but mostly as we like to test things and learn from them in the end even if it does not really cover a good purpose, I did it, just because I can.

+Глеб Скамейкин The speakers I used here is a set of stock speakers from if i remember correct Nissan Kubistar. literally any speaker like it would work. however will the final result vary depending on the speakers you get and how well you make it. the tweeter is optional and I would had skipped it if I knew the way it was put on the driver would infringe a patent of some sort from the beginning but it makes the sound much better also though. good to know

Likely not as most vibrators in phones uses a DC motor with a weight to create the vibrations, not sure if there are other types of solutions integrated in some phones today though or how good that would work. surface speakers do need some counter weight to work properly against various materials and if they are too light it would not make much sound at all for this purpose

+rodrigo fajardo the thing with this kind of speaker is that it turns literally anything in to a speaker that you touch with it, it is a fun and cool thing that needs less storage space and such. but the advantage are pretty few compared to a real speaker in a box other than that they don't need a box to play. but if you like to pay your friends a visit and "knock on their door" playing music through it this is the thing you want. playing on windows also makes the sound as loud on the other side so to speak

Devils Knight welcome to my channel! I have competed quite a lot in audio in my days of glory yes but this year I been too busy moving in and fixing with my new house it has not been time left for anything else. If you go by loudest sound 100db is not that much but in terms of listening volume it is rather loud. If you listen to audio in terms of comfortable volumes this 80-100db is where most gonna stay. 120DB is where it starts to be a risk of hearing damage and is equal to a concert in many cases. My production studio is capable to play music above 130DB and it is ridiculously loud. And my personal best is 150,7DB in my previous car. And 150,4 in the other I had. But one car broke down and the other was old so both have leaved me without any sound right now

Braeden Thornton this is what the piece of plexiglass is for, it is strong enough to carry the driver and the driver itself is the mass that forces the vibrations from the coil to go down into the surface and make the sound. Without this plexiglass the cone would be pushed in and destroyed

The speaker you may use can be a bit bigger or smaller, the outcome is that you get different output from them in the end, any stiff flexing plastic should do as long as it can carry the weight of the driver without bending too much.

Nothing in this video is claiming it is either. It’s omnidirectional, meaning it is pretty much no difference in sound around the device when it is playing. And it is the patent owners that have suggested this definition. I just built a device like this for educational and entertainment purposes and have had to follow the rules from Nevada Sound Research to do this. I have built a Bass shaker however that have a frequency response below 10hz but it is a completely different video. Search my videos for tactile transducer “bass shaker” and see what you want there

CA glue is not the best way to go here. All its strength is in tension . it doesnt have great tensile strength like that. It is greatest when it is being used too pull o the object so you really only needed a few drops of glue. A huge puddle of it like that does not give it more strength.

it depends very much how this glue is used, mostly it is used to glue hard materials with a thin layer as you say, but as you likely seen in the video the cap is made of plastic that few types of glue will stick well to, and also that the glue is put on both sides of the washer and makes a kind of cast bonding making it impossible for the washer to come lose even if the glue itself would not stick on the washer. it may still break lose as the glue can crack absolutely but we are not using tons of power here, there are several factors here of why I decided to use this glue for this build, it is cheap, Like REALLY cheap, it WILL stick on these materials, it is hard and not flexible increasing the output, it hardens fast, it stiffens the soft cone and dustcap and it is still strong enough to last any of the factors used on such build for a long time. Digital Designs uses CA based glue that uses the same activator for their high power sub woofers that bonds the spiders and also the cone to the voice coil and surround to the basket, and here we have the most extreme flexing with thousands of watts power that put strain with both positive and negative force on the glue and it won't break if a proper layer is made, and it is glued with a thick layer above the materials as well. but this video is a guide, you may absolute do it your way too, I won't care

Why go to all that useless waste of HAMMERING energy (and possible injury to yourself if it "flies at you if hit wrong) When you actually have a far better tool - that you ONLY USE to hold the socket with? Use the socket against one jaw and place the hammer's FLAT FACE against the other jaw, with the ball-peen "head" against the washer. USE the easily controlled PRESSURE of the vise, to strongly PUSH (with no hammering effect to over-kill the washer) the ball-peen into the socket with the washer trapped SAFELY & SECURELY between these two. No chance of it flying into your face - or anywhere else for that matter, when trapped between the jaws of the vise. Plus - you can get a very precise "curve" in the washer - without degrading it's strength.

I see no reason to cut out the cone as you've already greatly reduced the distance it can move. Leaving it would probably improve the sound of the unit.

Karmicmessenger the cone can be left on the driver but there are several reasons why I cut it away. One reason is to eliminate counter waves that could occur between the surface and the speaker that could lead to acoustic short that can reduce sound. The other reason is that the whole principle of this kind of speakers are that the driver itself should be as quiet as possible and only the surface should play the music, leaving cone would make its own muffled sound at all times. Third reason is that every little gram of weight reduced on the moving mass bound to the coil will increase the sound and range and we want it to be as light as it can be for this reason. The fact that surface speaker has a tight suspension is that it won’t need or can’t be that much of excursion on them as they would only bounce around. A big surface will move lots of air at a minimal movement. And it is also necessary to this way as the hard suspension also carries the whole weight of the driver and need to be stable to do so. Naturally if you want to make it another way is totally fine too, this is just a guided way of how I did it
