That's the battle field tested one. German steel is quite reliable for almost any cutting job.

I can't think of a worse kind of thief than the guy that would steal another man's knife. I still use this knife every now and then, but it's semi-retired now and I only take it out on special occasions. I have been using a Morakniv Garberg and I must say it's impressive. If you are looking for a no-nonsense, solid and affordable bush knife, then you can't go wrong with the Garberg.

I agree, these are really good, hefty blades that will hold up under the most extreme use. Mine is now a family heirloom and as such, I will never part with it for any price. Every other knife I own (even my beloved EDC Mercator black cat) is for sale at the proper time and price, but NOT the Puma. Not now, not ever. It's a shame that more people don't use this knife.

NICE! Old school puma white hunter is an all around great blade! I still have the original sheath but it became unsuitable and dangerous so I stopped carrying it for years. I just ordered a puma replacement leather sheath and it will be my bushcraft blade companion for my Gransfors Bruks hatchet.

Thank you, Papatechie. I don't believe in owning things that aren't used, and sadly, from what I've seen, most WH knives are lovingly kept in their original packaging tucked away in a drawer somewhere. When it comes to knives, you get what you pay for, and the WH is an expensive knife- so why hide it away or simply own it to look at it? If all I wanted to do was to look at a blade, then I could simply buy one for $10 at any truck stop and have a knife that is more interesting to look at than the WH. No, the purpose of the WH is not to see for how many decades you can keep the blade shiny and scratch free, the purpose of this knife is to be used in the field. And using it in the field for long duration is when you really learn to appreciate the usefulness and durability of the design. From what I can see, my video is the only one on KZbin that actually shows a WH hunter blade that is old, dirty, stained, and USED. So yeah, take your WH out of the box and do stuff with it- set it free and let it live!

Fantastic! I only wish I'd bought one when I had the chance. Great history, great knife. The newer models are just not up to your model. It's a superb blade.
@tjsogmc
@tjsogmc 6 жыл бұрын
I believe the new models are made from stainless steel instead of the "Pumaster" carbon steel. Carbon steel is stronger and takes a better edge, but stainless doesn't need as much care. I haven't worked with the new stainless models, so I can't honestly comment on them, but from what I've seen others say, they appear to be much softer than the Pumaster steels of the past. Probably not a problem since 99% of people don't use their White Hunters anyways. It's more of an "icon" knife for collectors now than a workmans outdoor knife like it was back in the 60's and 70's.

Yeah, I'd say you're right re people not actually using them anymore, except for collecting. All I know is that old PUMA of mine just held an edge like no tomorrow. I mean seriously, I'd gut, skin a goat, butcher it and still be able to cut up onions and potatoes for a feat around a campfire. I too don't have any experience with the stainless steels PUMA are using today. My leather sheath is all but knackered and the belt loop died on a hunting trip years ago. I used to take it as my camp knife too. Nowadays, I keep it for my kid, so he can have a go with it or keep it along with the stories behind it's life too.

Having a knife that can be handed down through the generations speaks more about the construction and quality of the knife than ten thousand opinions on KZbin. My White Hunter is still going strong, I'm certain my boys will hand it down to their own in turn.

I bought mine in the mid-1960s. Won’t sell it. Not a perfect knife; not a fan of serrations and have pretty well sharpened those away, the spine cutting edge never really served a purpose for me so I squared off that edge. But, it has never failed me. If you want a belt knife with a 6 inch blade this is an excellent choice.

Hey Red Scorpion! Nice Video! A question for one such as yourself, with some experience with the blade .... How is the knife for potential hunters' self defence re. specifically, 'stabbing'. e.g. a charging bear, mountain Lion, wolf etc. ... See below, my speculation from another youtube video. Comments appreciated! God's Love for Outdoors North America! " .....Hey, I just got one! Actually, I didn't really expect to like it much, as it seemed in images, sort of, front heavy, bulbous, not a good stabber etc versus the bowie style. But now, that I see it in person, the tip is conceptually shaped like a spear head or an arrow head, such that only the front of the weapon, would provide a retarding resistance/force against the knife going deeper and deeper. I.e. the shaft of the weapon would profide essentially no friction or resistance to penetration. Compare this with more typical knives, where the resistance force working against the stab motion increases the deeper the knife enters, because the blade stays the same width or becomes wider. The more typical hunting knife, with a pointier tip, might be a better stabber overall, but the White Hunter does not seem a failure in this regard. The knife is artfull greatness! Even provides good chopping, for a knife of it's size.... Excellent"

That's a tough question, because "self-defense" implies the unexpected. If I were to go to the woods with the expectation of having to defend myself against wild animals, I would not take the Puma WH. I would take a Kabar or something similar that is better suited to fighting. With that said, knives are tools. The WH is designed to be an all around field knife for big game. It does that job extremely well. But, if I needed to fight with it, then I would consider it better than using my bare hands. It has a point, it has a sharp edge, and it's exceedingly strong. I could make due, but I would approach the fight with a slashing technique and try to avoid stabs wherever possible. There is no one "right" answer. Sometimes you have to use what you got, not what you wish you had. It's not possible after the fact to select a knife for a situation- you can only use the knife you are carrying for whatever happens. That is why it's so important to know your knife's capabilities and work within that.

A note from Germany. The knife is basicly a descendant of german hunters knifes ,Waidblatt' or ,Standhauer'. These two knife types had been used more as billhook to clear a narrow path from thin branches, or when hunting by ,Ansitzjagd' ( waiting at a point, where often game is) to cut some branches for clear view, to cut a stronger branch for transport of shot game or thin firewood. Also Waidblatt or Standhauer is used as little cleaver, but for giving final stab ( Fangstoß) to wounded game, this knifes can do this, but they are not really intended for this. As far as i know, since the 1970s Waidblatt and Standhauer ( hauen- to hew) lost popularity among german/ austrian hunters. So in my opinion, the ,White Hunter' , based on traditional german knife typs, is better for chopping/ hewing than stabbing and more tool than real selfdefence weapon. I think, from traditional german hunting knifes, the small , Nicker' ( Genick- neck), especially older blade type, is better for selfdefence. Look to german wwl trench knifes, some are based on bayonnet, some on Nicker.

Forgotten: Once there was also a rather long type of german hunting knife, called ,Hirschfänger', which is not intended as tool, only for final stab of wounded game. But: Up to 1840s this knife was only allowed for noblemen, forrest officials ( Förster) and professional hunters. Up to 1940s periode it was a popular sidearm of private hunters and Forrest officials, and was useable for selfdefence like a long dagger. Traditional Hirschfänger is today more a ceremonial weapon for german ( continental European?) hunters, but the current large grow of boar number, seem to give again the need of modern designed Hirschfänger.

You know, I'm glad you brought that up. I love leather sheaths, I really do. There is something iconic and comforting about the natural feel of the hide. But to be honest with you, I got that nylon sheath while on a deployment because I had no other options at the time, and it's quite grown on me. The nylon is not affected by water, snow, dirt, heat, cold or sun. It's tough as nails- that particular sheath is about 20 years old give or take. It's not that thin Chinese dollar store junk, but actual ballistic nylon. I think it's a good fit for the knife and it shows no signs of wearing out anytime soon. So yes, I don't have a problem with nylon sheaths as long as it's the thick ballistic stuff. And so far, the knife hasn't said anything bad about it :)

Red Scorpion 6 it certainly is a beauty with tons of character, I wouldn’t get it restored either but I think to do it justice it should have a custom leather sheath, but it’s your knife👍

@@Beaverbush1969 If I could find a good used Puma sheath I would certainly use it. I just haven't spent any time looking because it's not a priority for me. And to tell the truth, it's called that Blackhawk sheath home for 20 years, and I've more or less come to identify the knife in combo with that particular sheath. But still, it wouldn't hurt to at least have an original sheath just in case I decide to sell it.....
