why pump is hammer after pumping

I know the steam pressure has to be enough to overcome back pressure but is there a rough number you could give me as to what the pressure should be? I have a medium pressure steam coming to the pump I maintain but it struggles. I’ve been told 60psi and have read 20 psi over the back pressure Any advice would be great. Thanks!

Haha, no requirements? Thats bs. Most pump traps are required to have a foot of space between the bottom of the expansion and the top.of the trap for better flow and to prevent water logging. Then you should have a gauge on the discharge side to see what pressures you need to overcome for setting the inlet air/steam.

my IOM on a armstrong pt3508 states 15 to 20 psi over outlet back pressure.
