This is great! Thank you for the video. With this setup, I was able to use a tiny pump to get water from my pond to my garden that is ~200 feet away! Used it to fill 2 55 gallon barrels and a few 5 gallon buckets in less than a day. In fully sun, that tiny pump filled a 55 gallon barrel in less than 2 hours, all with the power of the sun! No more lugging buckets from the pond to the garden, very excited that this works so well.

Just a couple of comments. As an electrician make sure you use wire that is rated for direct burial. The insulation will last longer and not get brittle. Better yet run it in some polytube or UV rated PVC. Yes you don't need a charge controller and battery but a future upgrade of these would be nice. I like to fill my barrels in the evening that way they have all day to warm the water, but I suppose the pond water is warm. Of course no sun minimal power and might ruin your pump.... Either great idea so you don't need the generator...

I dug a 4x4x10 well next to my garden and chicken coup. I use a 60w dc shallow well pump($65) to get close to actual house water pressure. All very useful, everyday. I do have a charge controller, old 12v battery(this is where the old ones go!). 2/100 watt panels. A slow constant'ish feed to your storage tanks is a great idea. We have parallel setups, thankyou for sharing.

Hope to see more videos from you, a little upgrade you could make to get a lot more water out of that pump/make it run longer would be a larger solar panel, that 30W is the absolute peak power, most of the day or through any cloud you'll get less than that, for a similar price you should be able to find a 2nd hand solar farm panel that's over 200W! it may be a 30v panel so you'll need a little DC-DC Buck converter but those are less than $10 as well, wire it all up and watch it go!

I’d really like to know more about how you do the watering itself. Can you attach a hose to the pump? I see that you are dripping freely into the garden, how does the water reach the plants that need it?
@gardendirt1099

as long as the roots of the plants can reach the wetness of the ground .. the plants will get the water they need.

So one of the things I did was use a hoe to dig a shallow trench down beside the row of okra for instance .. and just let the water flow out of the pipe on the uphill end of the trench so it will flow down to the other end. It just depends on the situation.

Love the fact you don't have to use a battery .Would this be enough power to do a outdoor shower?
@Graysail0r
@Graysail0r 2 жыл бұрын
I would for a low pressure 'drip' type shower. Especially if you elevate the tank. If you are thinking about disposing of the tank entirely then yes - these pumps are used to do small fountains (that's an upside down shower, lol). It is dependent on the elevation from the water source to the discharge - 21 feet for this pump.

Question about pump head. I do not need volume or high flow, however, I am transferring water from a 55 gal drum uphill to another drum. The distance is roughly 300 ft. but a gain in elevation of 50-60'. Do you think this little pump can do this or not the right application? I could use 1/4" or even 1/8" diameter outflow line. I simply need to fill the target drum once a week with 40-50 gallons of relatively clean water for backpack spraying in our target area. Thanks for any help. Great stuff by the way!

@gardendirt1099

The pump only uses what it needs .. I hooked up two solar panels to one pump to see if it would pump faster .. it didn't and did not hurt the pump. I switch it on by connecting wires together with an alligator clip on the end.

@briantrout7051

I like the idea quite a lot. But one thing I think would be practical might be some kind of a "current cut-out" such that when the output from the panel dropped below a certain level, it would shut the pump down until such time as the current was once again adequate to run the application. If just manually turning it on and off during full sun hours, it's not a big deal. I'm not so sure about the hours towards the beginning and end of the day when the panel may be putting out too little power to actually run the pump properly. How could that happen simply without spending a lot? (I can see applications well beyond a small water pump that this would apply to.) Thanks!
@gardendirt1099
@gardendirt1099 Жыл бұрын
When there is less sun .. like when there is a shadow from a tree branch .. it just drops in power to run the pump .. but it doesn't hurt the pump at all.

Nice work. I want to try this. Can this pump really pull water straight up 20'? How clear does the water need to be? Can it run off of 12v 100w solar panel?
@gardendirt1099
@gardendirt1099 Жыл бұрын
So the head pressure is important to think about .. it might pump 20' ft up .. but not be very much water coming out .. but it does give a range of options in that spectrum .. 1 - 15 or 18 ft. for example. It's going to flow more at 1 ft than at 18 ft. You just want to have clean water .. no leaves, grass, etc. to clog the line. Yes, it can run off a 100w solar panel. .. it's 12 volt.

Actually I would not recommend an inner tube now .. bought a new one and it didn't last. Instead I built a float using 4" PVC pipe joined with 90 deg. elbows. All glued together .. then wrapped aluminum wire around the pipe and through the barrel at the midway point. The barrel is now floating in my pond.

How high can the pump lift water actually?
@michaelcarey1040

that pump has very little head. I think 5 feet max and at a slow flow

It says on this pump that it will pump 7 meters which is about 21 vertical feet .. but of course the higher you pump the water the slower it's going to flow.
