Pumpkin Juice from Harry Potter | How to Drink

I'm making a homemade copy of The Wizarding World's Pumpkin Juice AND inventing an alcoholic cocktail an adult wizard might make based on their youth.

Today on How to Drink I'm tackling Pumpkin Juice from the Harry Potter books, the ubiquitous drink of young wizards the Wizarding World over. I also assume that an adult wizard mixologist might grow up and want to create cocktails inspired by the drinks and flavors of his youth, and I create an alcoholic cocktail based on Pumpkin Juice. I'm pretty proud of that one.
To make both recipe's you'll need to make some Cinnamon Syrup, this is fairly simple stuff to make. It's just a 2:1 simple syrup with cinnamon sticks tossed in.
Cinnamon Syrup
1 part Water
2 parts Sugar
2 whole cinnamon sticks per cup of water (I used four)
boil till clear, let cool, and bottle.
Throw additional cinnamon sticks in the bottle with the syrup, it'll continue to flavor.
You'll also need to get some Juiced Pumpkin. Not an easy thing, believe it or not, pumpkins aren't super juicy, and in most places they're not available year round. Instead look for a can of puréed pumpkin. It usually available in the dog food aisle, I know that sounds gross but it's really not. Just look for a can that lists ONLY pumpkin as it's ingredients and you're golden.
Juice of Pumpkin
1 can Puréed Pumpkin
1 Can of water
combine in saucepan, heat to a boil and immediately let cool.
Strain through cheesecloth and bottle.
And finally, to make the clone of the Pumpkin Juice available at the Wizarding World of Harry Potter, you'll need citric acid. You may already have this stuff in your kitchen, and if you don't you really should. It's handy. Can't make your own though, so buy it here:

4 oz. or 120 ml. Juiced Pumpkin
1.5 oz. or 45 ml. Apricot Juice
Two Dashes of Vanilla Extract
1.5 oz. or 45 ml. Cinnamon Syrup
.25 tsp or .65 g Ground Cinnamon
.25 tsp or .65 grams of Ground Allspice
1.5 TBS or 200 g Citric Acid
Shake & Pour
Adult Pumpkin Juice Cocktail
1 oz. or 30 ml. Juiced Pumpkin
1 oz. or 30 ml. Cinnamon Syrup
.25 oz. or 8 ml. Allspice Dram
2 oz. or 60 ml. Applejack
Shake & Strain
Garnish with Fresh Nutmeg & Cinnamon Stick

Pumpkin puree can be typically found in the baking aisle (not the canned vegetable aisle because grocery stores hate you) and it's cheaper without the dog on the label.

My son got a little vial of one of the potions from Orlando studios. I’d guess felix felicis though he said verita. Anyways he claims it’s edible and just a mix of honey and vinegar. It is definitely not. My guess is it also has shampoo mixed in. That silvery shimmer some of them have. Like what the unicorn blood looked like. So the takeaway here is according to my unreliable narrator of a child, at least one of the potions would need honey and vinegar. I would be very impressed if you could find a way to make that into something anyone would choose to consume

Insread of apple juice and appricot juice just add orange or mango juice and maybe also carrot juice, you're welcome. And don't put all those acids and sugars inside. Just 50-80% pumpkin juice, depends on how strong you like it and the rest is a mix or orange/mango/carrot juice, whatever combination you prefer For an adult version: 200ml pumpkin juice (or 80 ml mango juice + 120 ml carrot juice) + 50 ml amaretto + 80 ml Martini bianco) So you got a 330 ml drink, for 1 Liter use everything 3 times more

I am intrigued by pumpkin juice cocktails. I realize that it is out of season currently, but I have been wrestling with the idea of purchasing a steam juicer for canning. Your cocktail recipes may have just validated my decision. Steam juicers produce very clear juices. I think that drinks made with a clear juice would be lovely. I could also use whole spices when steam juicing. Thanks for the great recipes.

Hey Greg: an excellent Pumpkin Liquor: about a pound of diced kabocha squash/japanese pumpkin and 750 ml of Appleton Estate white rum, steeped for about a week (you could probably go about 5 days, but experimentation is a key to freedom). Kabocha is super easy to get if you have an Asian Grocery near you, and roasting it before hand is an optional step depending on if you want a deeper more carmelized pumpkin or a fresher pumpkin. Personally, I like to mix two ounces with about an ounce of Allspice dram (I use homemade, but St Elizabeth is dope) and either ginger beer or a ginger syrup/soda water mix to make a delightful mule variant that tastes like liquid pumpkin pie.

Just in case someone was wondering why pumpkin may be found in the dog food aisle: it's actually a very useful and oft perscribed food for digestive irregularities. True for people to to a certain degree, but it's very fibrous and so if you have a dog who has stomach issues, a lot of the time, especially if a bland diet (normally boiled chicken and rice) isn't the answer, a vet may suggest to try pumpkin mixed with the food as well to try and regulate digestion. In other words: Yes. Pumpkin found in the dog food aisle is just pumpkin, there is nothing specific to it that makes it dog related other than the label.

Definitely want to try the adult pumpkin juice. It did occur to me that you didn’t add an apricot component to it. I wonder how adding apricot brandy would change it. I have some peach brandy (not exactly the same as apricot, but it might be similar enough) that I’ve been saving to make a fish house punch, but I may experiment with it in this recipe-though this version seems pretty much perfect as is.

Missed opportunity here. Could have done apricot brandy and apple cider (which depending on the kind you get comes with cinnamon already Incorporated). P.S. acesulfame potassium is a big no-no sweetener for the health conscious, so good on you for leaving it out.

In Nh every grocery store has pumpkin pie, a type of pumpkin called pumpkin pie... In a can in the baking aisle or health section . pumpkin pie mix is normally found in autumn in baking aisle with several squashes and spice mix. Or maybe just have a dozen cans of pumpkin in your pantry year round. You can also have a cellar and keep pumpkins fresh for a whole year and a half.
