Honestly thinking about it, that's probably why the manager was so insistent about not moving from the register, he probably didn't want them going to the back and finding the Wii Unless that's just standard GameStop procedure, idk

if i was going to buy a wii, and i saw that woman and her situation, i'd have given her my number and said "know what? i'll get mine some other day." i'm a nerd, i might be passionate about the games i play, but i'm not heartless. especially around christmas. the fact that she came back to properly thank pumpkin is just, extra sweet. stories like this are why, even if i'm NOT religious, will still view christmas as a sacred holiday. you can't not want to help others that time of year. strangers have helped me and i have helped strangers. just makes the world suck a bit less, you know?

Having worked retail, it is a common practice for people to find stuff they might want and set it aside, usually with Management not making a fuss so long as we bought the stuff after our next paycheck, but it would never fly for hot ticket holiday items. Atleast at the places I worked. Management will do whatever if they get a kick out of their authority though.

Okay, I'm putting this out here. That manager was trying to save a Wii for themselves and knew that if he didn't ride his employee's asses, they would give away what he perceives as his. He put that Mario edition Wii in a hiding spot so that he could buy it later which is usually very against any retail company policy for high in-demand product. He told his employees not to go looking for any more Wii units because he knew they'd find it if they were looking. He backed off of her only because he knew he didn't have a case and if he had pursued action, an HR investigation would likely happen internally and he'd lose his job. ((PS: Reserving yourself a high-demand item is one thing. Reserving yourself a Black Friday item is taboo.))

@@wonderland9601 No really one. Just a general experience. I was a manager at Game Stop. I was always honest with my customers. However, I can tell you how many managers hordered and held on to wIIs. You can look up another store's inventory anytime to see what they had in stock, and you would call, and they would like. I was like man says you have 6. They would say nope, then wait till end of day, buy them all themself, and sell them online for double the price. People wouldn't check things in or say the shipment was late just to hord these things. I use to give people numbers. Hey, we only have 12, they are in boxs of 3, so you all get one. first 12 people thats it. That being said there was one lady, Tressa, I would do anything for. She was like my second mom [my first mom being my friends mom, and my mom being just a birthing pod]. She would just bring us stuff in general, food, pizzas be nice to us, treat us like humans. So we did anything for her. Held Wiis, swapped games, discounts, free shit. she never wanted for nothing. So sometimes there really is nothing left, and sometimes the manager is a selfish liar. Especially with limited edition stuff like that. Thats why If I wanted something i would buy it on the spot, and walk it to my car. none of this hiding and holding. Aww, its been like 15 years I miss Tressa...

As a current GameStop employee, Pumpkin is exactly the type of people we love to work with and SHOULD be working with. People who love games, people who like to talk to others and create the fun, friendly community that gamers and families should have. My store is fantastic because we aren't just there for numbers, we all just like games. We create friendships with regulars and like helping people. The quality of service can vary a lot based on location. So much so, that it's strange to me to walk into an out-of-state GS and not get the same kind of welcome we give at my store. There is also a no-hold policy (occasionally we "work things out" and try to hold something small if the person is coming that day) but no one without a reserve is allowed to swipe up anything until the reserve period is over. Employees have to pre-order things like everyone else (which this manager should have been able to do, not sure why they didn't). My team lets each other know when cool stuff arrives or when they're on the hunt for something, but we know that if someone comes in or orders online we fulfill it. Plain and simple. Hope that selfish manager got what was coming to him.

Nearby has been notorious for only hiring decent people with experience in gaming. I'm extremely sorry to hear your experience was so awful.. I had a similar story working retail on one of the busier days of the year. I work at a department store where we were full of Christmas stuff and there was a huge line. So I’m checking out the customers when I get to this one older lady, we talk for a bit while I’m ringing her up and after she pays she gives me a little necklace of the Virgin Mary and a brochure for her church. I thought ‘oh wow! A gift for my mom, she might like this’ then 2 customers after her was this utterly distraught woman. Her eyes were crimson, she looked like she hadn’t gotten good sleep in a while. She had one of those angel statues you put out on your lawn in her cart. I asked her if everything was okay and she say “I’m so sorry, I’m a mess. It’s just I lost my daughter not even a few days ago and this angel statue just reminded me of her, like it was a sign from God that she’s okay now.” Now I’m not the most religious man, but this was one of those moments where it’s like ‘oh shit, am I one of those signs for this person?’ I say to the woman “I’m absolutely sorry for your loss ma’am, no one should lose their child, especially so close to the holidays. I don’t want to tell what you should or shouldn’t get, but I think you are supposed to have this.” And I give her the necklace. She utterly broke down, my manager came rushing down to see what’s going on and the woman said “your employee is a saint!” That’s one of my fonder memories working retail

I still remember the gamestop manager after I moved to a new city. Super nice, super help and always being chill. He got me the RDD complete edition for half off because he just wanted to make a sale and talk about things going on in gaming. I hope he's doing better at his new job. He deserves it.

i am so ruined by customers by knowing that people would try and guilt trip you and manipulate you, so i wanted to later find out that i was right.. but it is soo tear jerking in the end.. the manager did not make a good call on making a big deal because it was morally right and that is better on customer service and employee moral

god I don't miss working retail. not because of shitty customers. some of the best interactions were from grateful, kind customers that I was happy to help. Its bad management. So glad my manager told us straight up “if you didn’t reserve on your own, you ain’t getting one. And if the higher ups deem it necessary you won’t be getting one until we have an abundance.” My manager was awesome because that mentality made the customers trust us. We even got threatened once I told a person in line “Do you think I want to sell this to you knowing I can’t play it until I can afford it!? I value having food a lot more”. The store was just in a bad area.

Reminds me of the time when I was working at McDonald's and I was supposed to be working drive for one of the two lanes. Yet a lot of things for the front counter and front drive were out and I was constantly running back to grab stuff since no one else was doing it. The floor manger was upset at me for leaving my post and doing the things that no one else was doing and still keeping up with the amount of costumers coming through drive. After a while in our busiest time she told me to stay in one place or she'll write me up and that's what I did. If I'm taking orders at the front and drinks are backed up I would hop around and start making the coffee, smoothies, frappes, ice cream, and that floor manager hated that too. So she threatened to write me up if I were to leave my post again. Later on in a busy moment and following her orders she started wondering why I wasn't helping out with the drinks. I figured that she didn't want me to do anything else because I would make her look bad (since she was just standing at one station not doing anything else). Then she yelled at me for not helping out with the drinks and then sent me to back drive. I decided to give her the bird before I went back there. I got sent home after that, and that was the last day I worked there. Years later I found out that one floor manger was the one stealing money from the safe in the office. How, you ask? Well she left the local MCD's and started to work at the one in the next city over, only to start stealing it from there. Not only was that the supervisors favorite, but I also flipped off the thief as well. Isn't irony cruel in the best kind of way sometimes? The long story short, sometimes it's better to still do your own thing even when the manger tells you not to, because it really is more for the costumer and not them. Having a costumer friendly approach (whether if it costs the company money or not) can be truly the best approach to things, and will benefit you in the long run!!

New to this channel, loved the story and i got tear eyed! You go girl. I freaking relate to having a major a-hole of a boss that dosn't have a heart. Lemme tell you a story. My previous workplace, a Restaurant in a suburban area on a Thursday or something in the spring last year. Buisness as usual, going between the register and the kitchen doing some minor tasks. Then a customer, an elderly woman who went in with an elderly man (who had purchased food and were sitting down) soon rushed to the counter with her phone in her hand. She gave it to me, turns out it was the paramedics who needed to speak to somone who knew first aid, as it turns out without us knowing the elderly man had collapsed during his dinner. I yeeted myself out to the corner of the restaurant and stabilized him. He was 'only' unconcious and seemed fine otherwise. So I further stabilized him as he woke up, calmed him and told him everything was gonna be fine and what just had happened to him. Really fun personality on that old geezer. In his 70s and was fit like Chuck Norris. And as the paramedics show up, I hear my bastard of a boss screaming from the kitchen in the restaurant towards me: "DO YOUR ING JOB DON'T STAND THERE". I speak to the paramedics and give them the rundown of what happened and what I did before I went back to the kitchen. Thereafter I confronted my boss, who was making his own freaking food rather than answering the register's phone himself. Told him that he should be ashamed and that you should prioritize the life of an actual living person (let alone a customer in your establishment) and not disregard his medical attention because someone wants to order food (something he could have managed himself). He screams crap at me, stuff about how I "always disobey him" and alot of other total bull. I told him to shove it, simple as. I was already going to quit anyway. So before they left, one of the paramedics gave me a big thumbs up and a silent thank you to be read on his lips from the other side of the establishment before they left. All in all, the lesson is to help people and tell your boss he's an a-hole 😅

Man that reminds me of when I worked at a Gamestop and Disney Infinity had JUST released 2.0's huge Avengers box set with all the Avengers characters on a stand fighting an ice giant or something. Similar to your story a woman came in tears asking if we had one cause her kid was gonna be home for 3 weeks due to an injury and she didnt want them to get too bored or depressed thinking about it. I told her that if I couldnt find one, id personally call every store on the list to see who did and ask them to hold it. Manager got pissed cause we couldn't find the keys to get the door open to the back room, so i did what i promised and called everyone until luckily the one a few streets down had the item and she thanked me for almost ten minutes before leaving. I get written up by the manager for "losing a sale" but then right after he finishes the note....he found the backroom laniard of keys around his neck MIXED IN his laniard of id badge and keys he always carried. This same dude also told me to NOT help a couple who were just browsing, but because i walked up and talked them through their likes/dislikes and genuinely wanted to help them, i made the store $200 in used games.
