Good video. Worked on my Dad's Country Club greens crew in the summers back in the 70s. They had core aeration machines. 3' for the greens and 12' for the fairways. Left the plugs to lay in the fairways. Rode a Z1 Kawasaki back then.

You two are real characters! I enjoy how well you get along and rib each other! That is interesting about the punch vs the ripper, keeping your hay pure and weed free means you can get a better price for it which adds to the bottom line. One suggestion, you might want to invest in an automatic shut off nozzle for your fuel pump! They save even very small spills.

I bought a hay king renovator a couple years ago. It didn’t seem to do much for me. I live outside San Antonio in a sandy loam soil. I have been thinking about a aerorator. I have just been running a tandem disk thru the pastures.
@tomservo5347
@tomservo5347 3 жыл бұрын
My Dad's pasture desperately needs aeration. After 70 years of cows packing it down something needs done. I've thought about welding some spikes on some old 12" pipe he has, adding some heavy bearings on each end and making a 3-point hitch for it. I've also thought about experimenting with a section by running a disc very lightly over it and sowing red clover. Wouldn't the clover roots help break up the compaction as well as providing nitrogen along with some timothy grass to cover the clover?

I have the six shank hay king renovator and have had it for probably 10 years and it's been a nice piece of machinery. You need one heck of a tractor to sink them in hard soil though. My 9540 Kubota will sink them pretty good in 4wd. That aerator looks really nice, it also looks as if you can throw it on the 3 point but you sure would need a massive tractor to pick that thing up with those weights on it.

@hogslayer

I was hoping to see the aerator in action as I'm wanting to switch from a renovator to an aerator. My fields are the same type of "black land" soil as you have. Seems like my renovator does too much damage to my hay fields especially how the coulters slice all the runners. Looks like you can get a used aerway or new Industrias American for the same money. After a little research it looks likes the Industrias brand is manufactured in Cuauhtémoc, Chihuahua. I'm wondering how much replacement tines are compared to aerway, hopefully cheaper.
@NorthTexasHay
@NorthTexasHay 6 жыл бұрын
+hogslayer I believe the tine replacement is the same, but I've used mine two years with hardly any wear. I'm thinking I can get 5 years out of a set of tines in black dirt and half that if you have sand. You can use aerway tines on a the industrious.

Thanks for the clear explanation of what you mean by punching the grass. Here in the UK we would call your punching machine a pasture slitter. How wide apart are the shanks on that ripper as they look quite close? What is the main reason why you don't want ryegrass to establish - is it really too coarse for your equine customers? (I realise that you are producing a premium product for sale at a high price). I'm surprised that you would like a sandy farm to farm your hay on as they are considered the least desirable soils for this type of crop because they are much more inclined to be acidic soils and from a fertiliser point of view they require significantly more fertiliser for a similar yield as they are considered low fertility soils. Yes they are free draining and growth will start sooner in the year and go on longer in the Autumn but they are seriously prone to drought. Having said that they are preferred soils for commercial turf growers.
@NorthTexasHay
@NorthTexasHay 6 жыл бұрын
+Dan Whiteford horse owners do not like to buy ryegrass. Drought problems wouldn't be an issue because I would irrigate and Lime would take care of the ph issue. Coastal Bermuda just seems to thrive in sand when managed correctly
@belindakt
@belindakt 6 жыл бұрын
Sounds like you're describing black gumbo. I can only imagine how hard that would be on equipment..... I would guess the ripper actually disturbs the soil too much? Now I understand why you're grass looks so good- you have that spiker to aeriate the roots, & a great well to get enough water down where it can do the most good. Very wise hay grower, you are!!!
@NorthTexasHay
@NorthTexasHay 6 жыл бұрын
+belinda turner it's not black gumbo it's just a black dirt. I guess it could be called clay, all I know is if you get behind on watering you will not catch up. As far as me being wise, my wife would get a good chuckle out of that.

We have black loam here. The product of more than 20 thousand years of tall prairie grass and several glaciers. We can't grow ground crops like onions potato carrot but corn soybeans and grass Excell in this area. Geology is such that ground moisture Wells up at night. I know he's gone now, but i just wanted to comment. Maybe help some people out. April is extremely late for aerating a hay field in Texas. December is a good month. He had no idea how lucky he was to have dark ground. Holds moisture and fertilizer better. Sand burrs don't like it much. Anyway do your aerating early. Helps your herbicide program work better.

If you haven't spilt diesel or gas on the ground then you have never pumped or poured it into a piece of equipment. Some of these guys on utube would be sponging it up with tissue clothes and Q tips. You can buy soil testing kits to test it on your own.

Actually it was our fertilizer company that came up with aspects of our fertilizer and soil testing plan, I know it seems counter intuitive but there testing plan and systems started up the last time farming was going through a crash cycle here, typically the first thing farmers cut when there's a shortage of money is inputs like phosphate etc. so from there point of view its a way to balance and even out there own demand and cash flow. For us the area we mange is pretty decent about 5000 hectares , so making sure we have just the right amount of nutrients applied by soil testing more than makes up for the cost of wasted product and costs associated from over application. (typically aerial top dressing) We are also still battling with issues from residual sprays that previous leasehold tenants seem to have applied heavily, we only found out about this after getting some extra tests done because the nutrient fertility was showing great but the actual growth was pitiful. increasing organic matter in the sub surface would help break up your clay, you can also add hell of a lot of gypsum as well, it works by changing the electrical charge around the plates and allows water to move between the platelets. You could move to a place with better soil / sand but gdamn you'll pay for it one way or another and you probably wont be able to pay for it making hay. (you could look to trial a small area where you are now (5-10 acres) and blend in a bunch of sand into the clay before resowing, ultimately you'll have to run your numbers, can your activity pay for what more desirable soils are fetching doing your current activity?

+Bede Meredith thanks for all that info. I can make 25000 bales on 80 acres in sand with one center pivot. That should be more than enough to pay for it. I'm not going to be rich, but I can make a living

Theres a wealth of knowledge online about improving clay soils, increasing organic matter and microbial activity, maybe get your kids to do some reading for you and get them to bring you the best ideas they can find (if your time constrained), it might take a few years to see the difference but its how we operate, slow and steady improvement. I really like your current set-up, you seem to have mastered what you need to do currently to produce a reliable consistent bale of hay, just looking at the videos you've made you can see the crispness, density and consistency in your end product. your current location looks fantastic to be honest nice slopping self draining fields, good reliable? water source right in the middle, I think you'd struggle to find something with better soil that had a reasonable price any where else.(it would be all snapped up by dairy people here) To product you take to feed stores, attach some cards to some of the bales with a link to your website / youtube channel and a contact number telling people where to get more and ask for feed back on the quality.

You have a good setup where you are there moving it would be a bad move you can head sand or whatever you want to that soil to loosen it up and make it however you want it living where you live having the well that you have to water the hey you would be in my opinion a fool to move

North Texas Hay Have you looked at the pasture punch? I have hilly fields with some rock, a ripper just makes a mess here. I'm looking to buy one, I have used a 12' I borrowed from NCS, filled the roller with water, my T5 115 plays with it. I feel it did in fact increase yields and as a bonus pushed a few rocks flush.

The frame appears to be as heavy as the Aerway. However, the technology of the Aerway is the twist in the tines. You need to look at the shape of the tines compared to the Aerway. The Aerway tines twist when they go into the ground. This causes a "shatter" effect where the soil is cracked underground loosening it up for air, nutrients, water, etc. I use an Aerway on a pasture area with a lot of clay. It took about three years of use, but now the clay area is porous and supports grass instead of only weeds. I found that aerating in late November was the best because the water from late rains and snow would penetrate and then freeze and expand causing further aeration. Also, the tine gangs on my Aeway are adjustable for angle. They go from 0 degrees, to 5 degrees, 7.5 degrees, and 12 degrees. This allows you to adjust the amount of opening you get in the soil. At 12 degrees they act almost like a rototiller and will completely open up the soil.

+Buckhorn Cortez these are adjustable also and they do the same type of twist as the aerway I think. I have tried a fall punch in a test section and it set my grass in that piece back a whole year.
